Sleeping bag situation

toddlermu · 21/09/2022 21:15

My 2.5 year old moved into a big bed this summer. She is in a small double with rails to protect her from falling out.

All summer I've not really used a sleeping bag, as it was too hot anyway. I would cover her up with a thin blanket and then periodically check on her and cover her back up. But sometimes I wouldn't and it wouldn't be an issue, as it was hot anyway.

Now it's colder. Her room is around 20-21 degrees at night. She always kicks the covers off and never covers herself back up again. It's stressing me out. I'm up all hours covering her up. I've decided to start using a sleeping bag on her but now I'm stressing that she will hurt herself when she inevitably gets out of her bed in the night or in the morning. She often gets out in the night and looks for me. Now she has the sleeping bag on, she won't be able to get out as easily. Getting out isn't that easy anyway. She can only get out from the foot of her bed, as the rail is lower there.

What did you do at this age ?

What temperature was it before??

toddlermu · 21/09/2022 21:17

I've also tried dressing her in thicker clothes for bed, but still feel she might get cold. I get cold at that temperature with no blanket whatsoever so I assume she would do. I just don't think it's right to sleep all night with zero blanket. Which is what ends up happening if I just leave her in bed with no sleeping bag.

Long sleeved pjs and fluffy socks on very cold nights. She will cry if she's cold. I would just leave her to it. Tuck her in before you go to bed.

TowerRavenSeven · 21/09/2022 21:17

I’d leave her to it. I’m assuming if she got cold she’d cry for you and then you can pull them up?

During the summer, it was SO hot. Like 25-26.

You can get sleeping bags with feet holes. I think ours were slumber sac? Just google sleeping bags with feet. You’ll find loads.

Namechanger965 · 21/09/2022 21:18

DDs both managed to walk in sleeping bags, by sort of shuffling along, so she will most likely be fine. I would be more worried about the stairs though? Would she have to go past the top of the stairs? If she’s waking up cold and can’t keep covers on could you get some fleece pyjamas instead?

YellowTreeHouse · 21/09/2022 21:19

Why not use sleeping bags with feet?

Namechanger965 · 21/09/2022 21:19

Is she actually waking up and asking for you or are you going and checking on her?

Merrow · 21/09/2022 21:19

We got these - 6 months in and he hasn't managed to kick his duvet off in the night! Still able to get out in the morning. Before we were in every third night or so to replace his blanket as he woke up cold and shouted for us.

Also I’d just take the rails off if a concern. Neither of mine ever had rails. I think eldest fell out maybe twice and I don’t remember younger one falling out at all.

Lou98 · 21/09/2022 21:20

20/21 really isn't that cold. It's recommended 18-20 for babies so I'd say that's probably a perfect temp.

My 1.5yr old has a duvet. He kicks it off and lies on top most nights but if he's cold he wakes up and pulls it back over himself.

If they get cold, they'll wake up.
If you insist on a sleeping bag though you can get ones with legs so they can still walk about normally

She wakes up looking for me. Not ideal, but that's another story. It's not linked to when I cover her up. It always seems to happen when I'm fast asleep.

I'm in the same position, we have a little oil radiator on my DDs room for when it gets cold.

I've talked to a few people with old kids to see if they have any tips and they have all said oh they just learn to put the covers back on themselves but couldn't give me an age when this happens. It's stresses me out too 😭

SalviaOfficinalis · 21/09/2022 21:20

Some sleeping bags have feet/leg holes, might be worth looking at?

Sleeptightnightlight · 21/09/2022 21:22

Ours just learned to get about with the sleeping bag on.

She can also walk around in her sleeping bag. I just worry when she's getting out of bed she might fall.

We have a stair gate, thankfully !

Yea to sleeping bags with feet! They come in all togs just like normal sleeping bags. I think DS was about 3 when he should pull the covers back on, although at bedtime he still manages to forget and need someone to come in and do it!

She loves tucking everyone in at the moment and then kissing them good night. Everyone, but herself !

Why does it stress you out? My DS (now 3) used to kick his covers off all the time but so long as he didn't wake up because he was cold, I assumed he was fine. He now has gone to the other extreme and snuggled under a proper duvet when it's a heatwave. Kids are weird.

FlounderingFruitcake · 21/09/2022 21:32

I don’t really get why you’re stressed about it. It she’s cold she’ll pull up the covers or shout for you if she can’t manage it but mine both managed it from about 18 months so I don’t see why she wouldn’t. At most put some socks on to avoid cold feet. I wouldn’t go back to a sleeping bag with a 2.5 year old.

crazycoatlady · 21/09/2022 21:32

We used to tuck toddler duvet in side ways so DS was still covered but didn't have lots of spare quilt to kick off or get buried under.

Worked well in his toddler bed. Also, toasty pjs and socks. They soon learn to pull the quilt up when needed.

As soon as he was out of the cot we stopped the sleeping bags so he wasn't at risk of falling or getting hurt getting out of bed.

JenniferBarkley · 21/09/2022 21:34

My eldest was the same, now at four she'd still happily sleep all night with no covers and probably no pyjamas too, she just doesn't feel the cold. Youngest is two and clings to her duvet. They're all different. If she was uncomfortable you'd know all about it!

LaaDeeDaaa · 21/09/2022 21:38

If she falls, she will just get up again.

Have you tried telling her not to get out of bed because it's cold?
