Currently searching for curtains and really struggling to find anything that works. I'm looking for colour (yellows, blues, teals), with blackout lining and in larger-than-average sizes around 2.2m wide by 2m drop.

I don't want polyester but any ready made cotton curtains I've found on sites like Next and Dunelm are very fuddy duddy and old fashioned - think swirly patterns and checks.

I don't quite have the budget for bespoke, but could stretch to £150-200 per pair.

Please dear mumsnetters, tell me where I can find reasonably-priced ready-made blackout curtains in contemporary designs!

IKEA via charity shop, most in unopened packaging. Wash them before hemming.

INeverSawAPurpleCow · 21/09/2022 19:07

La Redoute. Plain cream linen, unlined. Also, have a look at Next, very good value for money.

wonkylegs · 21/09/2022 19:20

Mine are homemade after a quote for over £2000 for just one of my two living room windows, made me think I should just try it myself.
I managed to buy the fabric I wanted in a end of roll store (it was the exact same one as in John Lewis as luck would have it - a Sanderson print) and including blackout lining cost me £90 for two sets of curtains. Yes it took me time and lots of swearing but they are perfect and even if I had paid myself a decent amount, I saved myself thousands.
Understand that making might not be your thing though and for one of the kids rooms I got IKEA curtains and separate blackout linings which was reasonable even for very long drops.

LosttheremoteAGAIN · 21/09/2022 19:31

We bought ours on ebay
i found an odd size from one seller and another (normal) size from a seller that is based a ten minute walk from where I used to live

never had issues with them

i did buy some from ikea but dopey dp got the unlined ones and they are like net curtains (just because he refused to spend an extra fiver)

NeverDropYourMooncup · 21/09/2022 19:36

Amazon.

Eighty quid to do three large windows and the front door in a linen-look material with blackout thermals. I'm sure they aren't the best quality, but I could afford them.

canyouextrapol · 21/09/2022 19:38

Dunelm, but their pricier range. They were still cheaper than anywhere else

WildfellAnne · 21/09/2022 19:38

IKEA. Can’t beat them.

Snozwanger · 21/09/2022 19:41

We have two square bay windows so had no choice but to get made to measure. We bought them from Blinds2go and have been really happy with them. Both sets are average in length as they sit on the sill (not to floor) and the non blackout set were around £300. Prices vary depending on which fabric you choose but it might be worth a look.

Happyher · 21/09/2022 19:43

Debenhams online

Stichintimesavesstapling · 21/09/2022 19:46

I really want nice thick heavy curtains but can't find anywhere that sells them for an ok price. The thermal ones at dunelm are all so thin.

TheHateIsNotGood · 21/09/2022 19:49

Charity Shop, Recycling Centre and some that I have kept from elsewhere, often for years.

Once you have some decent, lined curtains you really like then it's much easier to fit your colour scheme/design/fittings around them.

Otherwise you're on an endless search for the perfect Curtains to fit, when it's better to find the perfect curtains first and make everything else work.

After all, for several months of the year the curtains are drawn a lot and so you look at them a lot, so best that you really like them..

StoneofDestiny · 21/09/2022 19:49

Small design shop near me for downstairs and John Lewis for upstairs

bellsbuss · 21/09/2022 19:55

I've got a mixture of Laura Ashley, Dunelm and Next

Allthecoloursoftherainbow · 21/09/2022 19:55

Try www.the-millshop-online.co.uk

They are a fabric retailer so hopefully you can find a design that you like, and then you can choose to have made to measure curtains.

(But in answer to your question, mine are from a furniture/homeward charity shop!)

georgarina · 21/09/2022 19:55

I've got dark green velvet blackout curtains from Ikea

Piglet89 · 21/09/2022 19:56

I’ve got teal coloured ones at the big window of our bedroom. Pencil pleat. John Lewis.

feel a bit of a mug now having had the ones for my other windows made bespoke for a lot more by Blinds Direct and Curtains made for free (tho TBF the latter had a lovely alphabet design with animals representing each letter which I chose for my son’s room).

Invisimamma · 21/09/2022 19:57

Just got a pair from Amazon for.our bedroom, they're blackout, thermal lined, kind of linen/oatcake colour. Really nice quality and were only £44.

jenny38 · 21/09/2022 20:05

Britannia rose - an online website. Great choice of fabrics and some fabric usually in sale. I got some little miss lined curtains for 275 for window that is 275 across and 235 height. Made to measure. I've used them three times now.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 21/09/2022 20:06

Ikea Majgull. I have both of these colours and they're lovely, really great at blocking the light although they are not lined.

Come in lots of other colours too.

DrivingTheoryTest · 21/09/2022 20:11

IKEA, Dunelm, Amazon.

TheLeadbetterLife · 21/09/2022 20:12

IKEA all day long. Really nice fabrics and colours, and they all come in a 3m drop. They're unlined, but I add lining fabric if I need them to be blackout.

Their Sanela range in cotton velvet is gorgeous and block the light very well even without lining.

They also sell pinch pleat curtain hooks which makes them look very smart.

AssignedSlytherinAtBirth · 21/09/2022 20:12

Mine are from The Natural Curtain Company and they are lovely. DH managed to set fire to them the idiot and there is just a little brown patch. I am super relieved I bought fire-retardant ones, although I suppose all new ones should be.

Trulyweird1 · 21/09/2022 20:16

I know you say you can’t do bespoke, but maybe search for a local curtain maker , google or FB , and get some ideas. I have had some real bargains from a local seamstress who measured up,told me where to get reasonable fabrics, the made them for me.
failing that some second hand curtain dealers have some lovely items.

Pyewhacket · 21/09/2022 20:18

John Lewis

Sgtmajormummy · 21/09/2022 20:25

Very pleased with the ILIV fabric I got Online from here. Other cheaper fabrics are available and they give free lining fabric, too.
Peter Lees Fabric
They offer a reasonable rate for making the curtains but I didn’t trust my measuring skills!
