Adnan Syed is released!

Adnan Syed was yesterday released from jail, after a judge ruled that the state violated its obligation to share evidence with the defence that would have helped his case.

Having listened to the Serial podcast about the case, I think this was the right decision and it's come 22 years too late. Based on the evidence, Adnan should have been acquitted.

I hope this now opens the path to finding Hae Min Lee's real killer.

If you do Give The Prosecutors a listen, I would be really interested to hear what you think.

lightenuplantern · 01/08/2023 13:39

*Prosecutors must maintain the highest standards of fairness and impartiality at all times. And I think if you give the podcast a listen you'll agree that that's exactly what they do.

CleverLilViper · 01/08/2023 14:08

I think he was guilty.

So I’m absolutely not celebrating this as it’s disgusting.

Thanks for the recommendation. It's really well done!

Only 3 eps into the Adnan Ayed and Murder of Hae Min Lee eps of the pod but thus far they have been very objective and thorough. Do they give any opinions as to who they think is responsible it or is it like this throughout?

willowwarbler85 · 08/08/2023 11:14

@CleverLilViper Agree.

steff13 · 08/08/2023 11:54

The Prosecutors is my current #1 podcast. They're doing a great job covering this case.

lightenuplantern · 08/08/2023 12:16

I've not yet listened to today's episode but they haven't said who they think it is, no.

They go over the case in detail and it's not the only case they've covered.

One big reason I like The Prosecutors is because its not sensationalist or exploitive like some of the true crime genre seems to be. Glad you find it as insightful as I did.

I’ve listened to a couple of random episodes of The Prosecutors based on the recommendations here and if you think this is impartial then I’d hate to know what you think partiality sounds like.

They clearly think Adnan is guilty. Brett even said “When Serial came out Adnan was in prison for the crime he committed.” He also said that Adnan 100% wrote the second letter from Asia with no proof of that being the case.

As prosecutors they seem to be of the opinion that the police and the prosecutors did everything right and come up with reasons to fill in all the holes in the case that was made. I’d be more interested to hear what they have to say about the recent DNA testing that showed no trace of Adnan’s DNA and whether they try to explain that away too.

I don’t think partiality with cases like this can exist. Everyone goes in with a pre-conceived idea of guilt or innocence. And as prosecutors their whole job is to take what the police say and put people in prison using that information. They are never going to be impartial.

Cantanka · 08/08/2023 14:03

If they work as prosecutors, they are highly unlikely to be impartial

OK but Rabia Chaudry who was heavily involved in Serial, and the Case Against Adnan Syed on HBO, is just about the most partisan person you could imagine. Those series aren’t objective either.

LylaLee · 08/08/2023 19:16

The fact that Adnan had been texting her all the time, but then stopped when she disappeared, tells me he was involved in her death. Would you stop texting your missing gf who everyone was worried about and looking for?

Rabia fell out with the maker of Serial maker Sarah Koenig, so I wouldn’t say Serial was partisan:

“I was naïve,” [Rabia] said. “I hoped she’d become an advocate for Adnan in a way that we couldn’t.

"But as Serial unfolded, I realised that wasn’t going to happen.”

She added to the newspaper that both she and Syed both were upset by Koenig’s refusal to vouch for his innocence, insisting that the Serial narrator should have done more to stand by Syed.

But Hae didn’t even have a mobile phone, she had a pager. You can’t text a pager.

Even Hae’s close friends all assumed she ran away from home to her dad’s house when she went missing, they didn’t try to contact her either.

And Hae wasn’t Adnan’s girlfriend anymore. He was seeing and sleeping with other girls after Hae, and also met Hae’s boyfriend when she called Adnan to fix her car when it broke down.

The prosecutors is an awful podcast. They are either deeply disingenuous or really thick. I can’t tell which. Don’t listen to that rubbish.

iliketherainyouknow · 09/08/2023 11:36

Whilst previously unfamiliar with The Prosecutors podcast, I am now avidly immersed in their Adnan Syed case coverage, currently on their fifth episode whilst holed up in bed 🤧. For those who value meticulous analysis, and a prior knowledge of the case, I heartily suggest giving this pod a listen!

P.s to those who have got themselves in a tizzy over The Prosecutors coverage being brought up: It seems difficult to reconcile calling the hosts of the podcast "dumb" and resorting to name-calling with having genuinely listened to the podcast.

Why the insults? If people here want to listen to The Prosecutors, that's ok and shouldn't be a threat to your viewpoint as such that you retort with personal attacks.

Welcome to Mumsnet.

There is for sure a bit of sock puppetry happening here.

Because they are asserting things as fact that are false. Either they are too stupid to realise or they are corrupt. You pick.

I had an alphanumeric pager and I am roughly the same age as Adnan and Hae. You could text a pager

Seaography · 14/08/2023 21:59

I have only partially listened to The Prosecutors so far. I don't think they are thick or corrupt, my issue so far is they are approaching as Prosecutors rather than investigators. Instead of trying to establish the truth it appears to me that they are establishing if the evidence supports the case presented by the police. Understandably as that is their job, but it certainly doesn't make them these beacons of impartiality.

From the first episode they mention the 4 key facts of Jay's testimony and if the evidence says they are true then Adnan is guilty if it doesn't then he is innocent. But it is entirely possible for Jay to be lying about all 4 things and Adnan still be guilty! Equally proving that Adnan was with Jay at all the key times doesn't say he is guilty as that hinges on them happening around the murder, not it being an ordinary day. Ultimately the evidence should lead the way.

Regardless of guilt or innocence, once a case has been botched to this extent justice is rarely possible. Evidence will have been missed, lost or corrupted. The identity of Haes murderer will always be in doubt and Adnan will never have a fair trial.

sunisshiningweatherissweetmon · 15/08/2023 09:53

I will say Bilal Ahmed is a real headscratcher in this case. Convicted of SA against multiple men and boys and linked to Adnan through the cell phone he bought for Adnan under his own name, the same cell phone that plays a major role in this case? Plus, Bilal was Adnan's FIRST call after getting arrested!?
Makes you wonder.......
