WIBU to wake sleeping coldy baby because he’s wearing too many layers?

7 month DS has a cold - not awful, but sneezy, snotty and sleepy all day. No temp.

Put him to bed at 8pm. Before his bath the groegg said 18 degrees in his room. It’s been 17 degrees in the mornings recently and he’s had freezing cold hands when I’ve picked him up, so I figured he’d be best overnight in a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog duvet.

By the time I put him down it was 19 degrees on the groegg. One hour later the monitor is saying 23 degrees (but it’s always 2 degrees out, so it’s probably 21 degrees in there).

DH now tells me he found a vent in DS’s room earlier and closed it as he figured it was creating a draught. Information I could have done with before I bundled him up for a chilly room!

He has a cold, he needs to sleep. But what if he overheats now? Do I sneak in to double check the temp and open the vent, risking waking him up? Or deliberately fully wake him up to put a 1 tog on him or remove his sleepsuit?

And yes, I’m a first time Mum. 🤦🏻‍♀️

YABU - never wake a sleeping baby
YANBU - he’s wearing too many layers, sort it out.

Leave him alone and bin that bloody gro egg. Use your common sense

ohthejoysoftoddler · 19/09/2022 21:12

They'll be fine, leave them. It'll get cooler overnight anyway

NuffSaidSam · 19/09/2022 21:14

Just open the vent or a window or remove the duvet (I'm not sure you're supposed to have a duvet in a cot anyway!)

Spottybluepyjamas · 19/09/2022 21:14

It'll get colder as the night goes on - he'll be fine Smile

AloysiusBear · 19/09/2022 21:14

Leave him alone, the temperature will drop overnight. I once tried following the advice on clothing & room temps for babies to the letter and my daughter was just too cold to sleep. Every baby is different.

AloysiusBear · 19/09/2022 21:15

At 2.5 tog im guessing by duvet she means a baby sleeping bag.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 19/09/2022 21:16

He will be fine, id gently feel his neck and check he doesn't feel really sweaty. I have a really warm flat so my son has always slept in warm rooms

LittleBearPad · 19/09/2022 21:19

Let him be, open a vent again if you want to and chuck the groegg.

One of my better days when I unplugged the bloody thing.

Muddledandbefuddled · 19/09/2022 21:23

I'd open the vent and check he doesn't feel too hot

FreyaStorm · 19/09/2022 21:25

I think it’s worse for babies to overheat? If they’re cold this at least will wake them up/make them cry…?

KatieKat88 · 19/09/2022 21:26

All the bloody gro egg did was illuminate the room so I couldn't sleep and also stress me out about the temperature. Bin it!

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2022 21:26

Open the vent and leave him be.

Somethingsnappy · 19/09/2022 21:26

Just open the window and let the room cool down a little!

Babyfeverbutnotlikethat · 19/09/2022 21:30

Oops by duvet I meant sleeping bag sorry! I’m sleepy too… Reading responses now.

I'm sorry but babies under one should definitely not have a duvet, I would take that off and replace with a thinner blanket.

Daisypod · 19/09/2022 21:31

Ah crossed posts. In that case I would open the vent again just to keep it a little cooler

Bossa09 · 19/09/2022 21:34

Hiya! First time mum too. I have the GroEgg too. Mines currently says 21.2 and DD is in a sleepsuit, short sleeve vest and 2.5 tog sleep bag.
Sometimes when it’s warmer I’ll put her in a 1.5 tog but just now I feel there’s a chill in the air (Scotland). I feel her chest / tummy and legs if needed to see if I need to change. That being said she’s a deeper sleeper usually, so other babies could wake up with that.

Bossa09 · 19/09/2022 21:37

Sorry DD, has a cold / runny nose and proper chesty cough. But her temp seemed normal. I’ve just dressed her as normal and going about it as I usually would.

Soubriquet · 19/09/2022 21:47

Leave him be. Does it feel really warm to you in the room? I bet it doesn’t.

MarianneVos · 19/09/2022 21:47

I'd just unzip the sleeping bag.

He doesn't need a great, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog unless it's below 16 degrees.

MarianneVos · 19/09/2022 21:48

Vest not great! That's the grobag guidelines

Goldbar · 19/09/2022 21:49

Check his neck. If he's hot and sweaty, I'd either change him or cool the room down. Otherwise he's probably fine.

MarianneVos · 19/09/2022 21:49

And cold hands are fine, you want to check body temp by feeling his neck.

FlounderingFruitcake · 19/09/2022 21:55

I’d probably sneak in and open the vent or window for tonight. But that does seem like a lot of clothes. In general I wouldn’t be doing a long sleeved vest AND a sleep suit under a 2.5 tog bag unless the room is like 16 degrees. Babies hands are often cold because their circulation isn’t as good as adults and it’s never an indicator that they need more layers. For an accurate warmth check stick your hand on their back or tummy. Also a cold baby will cry and let you know so I’d always errr on the side of chilly rather than risk overheating.

Babyfeverbutnotlikethat · 19/09/2022 21:58

Thanks for the replies! I had checked the groegg guidelines (as I often do) and knew that at 18 degrees he’d be a little overdressed, but decided that was ok when he has a cold and there seems to be a chill in the air like a PP said.

But… he only got over an ear infection last week which came with a temp obviously and I’m quite paranoid about febrile convulsions as I had one when I was little. So the thought of him overheating makes me a bit anxious atm too.

DH just volunteered to sneak in and check the temp and open the vent. Groegg said 19.1 so we’ve left the room, vent and baby exactly as they are. It’ll probably drop to 17ish overnight and I’ll be glad he’s got the extra layers.

The monitor still says 23! Maybe that should go in the bin!

Thanks all for being voices of reason!
