WIBU to wake sleeping coldy baby because he’s wearing too many layers?

7 month DS has a cold - not awful, but sneezy, snotty and sleepy all day. No temp.

Put him to bed at 8pm. Before his bath the groegg said 18 degrees in his room. It’s been 17 degrees in the mornings recently and he’s had freezing cold hands when I’ve picked him up, so I figured he’d be best overnight in a long sleeved vest, sleepsuit and 2.5 tog duvet.

By the time I put him down it was 19 degrees on the groegg. One hour later the monitor is saying 23 degrees (but it’s always 2 degrees out, so it’s probably 21 degrees in there).

DH now tells me he found a vent in DS’s room earlier and closed it as he figured it was creating a draught. Information I could have done with before I bundled him up for a chilly room!

He has a cold, he needs to sleep. But what if he overheats now? Do I sneak in to double check the temp and open the vent, risking waking him up? Or deliberately fully wake him up to put a 1 tog on him or remove his sleepsuit?

And yes, I’m a first time Mum. 🤦🏻‍♀️

YABU - never wake a sleeping baby
YANBU - he’s wearing too many layers, sort it out.

Good points about it not mattering that the hands are cold - I knew to only check temp on the back and chest rather than go by the hands, but had forgotten that the hands might feel v cold because of poor circulation and that there might be a big difference between hand temp and torso temp.

Freezing hands means nothing - you cannot tell a baby’s temperature by their hands. It’s fine for their hands and feet to be cold.

If you want to know if baby is too hot or cold you need to check the back of their neck.

@YellowTreeHouse Thanks - cross posted. I’m familiar with how to check the temp. But it’s also v hard no to feel his icicle hands in the morning and feel a bit guilty that he might have been too cold all night.

Of course, as others have said, if they’re cold they’ll wake up… but as DS has been waking up around 5.30 the last couple of nights, which I think is the coldest part of the night, maybe he really has been too cold. Here’s hoping the extra layer gets me a lie in to at least 6.30am..!

Aw, first time parenthood. You sound like very loving, caring parents OP. This made me giggle because I was exactly the same with my first and I know that when DC2 arrives in January it'll be lucky if I even check the bath temperature properly 😁

Well he’s now wide awake - stirred after 2.5 hours and couldn’t quite settle himself back down as he normally would. So I’m feeding him back to sleep now - his back feels completely normal, even cool! And I’m glad of my dressing gown in this room even at 19 degrees.
