Nothing open, schools off, people stuck at home*.

My street is usually busy but it's been so quiet today. Buses seem to be running a Sunday service too.

(*I know many people are still at work. Just seems like a lot of people are off, especially with the likes of McDonald's and Starbucks being closed!)

So what if you live somewhere with no independent coffee shops ?
What do you do ?

Some of the local shops have resumed their opening hours, apparently there’s queues to the door.

I can’t believe people can’t survive without a shop being open, which they knew would be closed, for a few hours of one day.

I find it really embarrassing, to be honest.

Tbf Easter Sunday closures alway take me by surprise, and you’d think Good Friday would serve as a reminder!

Eeksteek · 19/09/2022 14:42

It’s so quiet. I noticed as soon as I woke up. It’s not noisy here, but there’s always people doing something and background traffic. Not today. It was a bit reminiscent of lockdown, with the roads being so quiet. I find it peaceful, rather than eerie, but we’re all different.

And yes, we’ll have a wholesome day picking and processing apples, walking the dogs, baking crumbles, having a family dinner, a hot bath and a gin or two. I don’t see it as disrespectful and I don’t think HM would be offended. I’d have watched if we had a TV licence, but didn’t feel obliged to get one for the occasion.

most of the commercial stations have live streamed it on YouTube, including Sky.

no ads. no licence necessary.

crumble and gin sounds good though.

TokyoSushi · 19/09/2022 14:52

Yes I quite like it, until DS has turned out to need ingredients for food tech tomorrow... supermarkets are opening at 5pm here though so all good.

Museya15 · 19/09/2022 14:58

Yes, it does and im glad I got to watch the funeral. RIP Queen Elizabeth!!

VioletInsolence · 19/09/2022 15:01

It’s been lovely….I live on a main road so it makes a big difference to me.

A few shops and cafes open in my area too. I’m in a very studenty/multicultural area so I guess that makes a bit of a difference.

Well apart from the massive crowds on the streets, I guess.

That's only in London. There's a huge amount of the UK that isn't London you know!

CulturePigeon · 19/09/2022 15:07

I think it's good to have the occasional quiet day. We live on a busy road and it's lovely to have days when hardly anything goes along it, not least the emergency vehicles rushing to the motorway which always upset me with the thought of some tragic accident for someone.

I've been watching the funeral but even if you're a die-hard republican or just not interested, it's a great day to go for an autumn walk or do some gardening if you have one. Or just enjoy the less frenetic pace! The shops are only closed for one day (and you can get milk, bread etc from the petrol stations if necessary).

I relish a break from the craziness of modern life with its 24-hour madness.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 19/09/2022 15:08

Just like a normal Sunday for us (I know it’s Monday). Chilled morning, watching the tv - funeral rather than a film - then dog walk and dinner.

nokitchen · 19/09/2022 15:08

It has been a bit like Christmas but without the presents today. All the family here, special dinner and pudding and champagne to toast the queen. Been really good family day

Manchester had big screens up and people were encouraged to bring deckchairs.

I’ve not been into town so no idea how popular it’s been.

alll the cinema showings for the funeral were sold out tho.

It doesn’t have the same weird lockdown vibe for me. More like Christmas Day, nothing much open but you know it’ll be business as usual tomorrow.

Me too. Lockdown stretched out into uncertainty.

Today just feels like something momentous has happened but everything will be back to normal tomorrow.

NewBootsAndRanty · 19/09/2022 15:12

Windinthepillows · 19/09/2022 13:59

It’s one day. I guess someone will be along to say they have ptsd next.

I have ptsd.

Nothing to do with today though.

thisyearsuckssofar · 19/09/2022 15:13

I was the only person to get on at my stop for my early morning train for work. It was an 8 carriage train with a handful of people on it.

Reminded me of lockdown and also that feeling that everyone is at home apart from little old me. I know that's not true and I got on with the day

I hear you. It's like this eeriness in the atmosphere. Horrible. Stuck in limbo.

Stuck in limbo why though? Unless you usually shop on a Sunday there's loads you could do
Generally I'm at home on a weekend but I'll be cleaning, cooking, exercising, watching a film, sitting in the garden, reading a book, having a long bath...
