To say ‘put a bloody jumper on’?

Bookishnerd · 19/09/2022 10:02

We have a wood burner, and twice this week I’ve come into the living room to find my DH has started a fire… but he’s wearing boxers or shorts or ‘summer clothes’.

We have quite a warm house and it gets roasting upstairs. We bought extra logs this winter to heat the downstairs only, as it doesn’t take much for heat to rise and it to get too hot.

It’s been chilly the last few days, and I’m not a miser - if he’s cold, put the fire on, no problem.

But put a jumper on first?! Get dressed?! Don’t waste energy and money?

When I mentioned it to him, he brushed me off with a shrug and a ‘meh’.

I understand wanting him to get dressed, as long as you don't mean bundling up.

I've got a jumper on, I'm cold so the heating is on. I refuse to be cold in my own house.

My friend is the type who wants everyone wearing thermals, socks, fluffy pyjamas, dressing gown, gloves... before she'll even entertain the notion of putting the heating on - that I'll never understand.
Her home is always freezing, the walls and floors are freezing. It's uncomfortable just visiting, especially because you can't take your coat off!

ForestDad · 19/09/2022 16:39

Possible that DH likes the fire for comfort as well as warmth? It's certainly cheering to see. You can do a lot of good thinking looking at a fire.

Sunnyqueen · 19/09/2022 16:40

Sounds like a typical guy who just wants an excuse to get a fire going lol

SecretVictoria · 19/09/2022 16:42

pd339 · 19/09/2022 13:10

Surely you can't believe that?!?

Having experienced it, if you read my other posts, I do!

If somewhere is already cold and I am already cold, my body will not generate heat. I used to come in from a late shift (worked mostly outdoors) by which time the heating would have been off for about 6 hours and nothing would get me warm. Obviously, I’d wrap up and use a hot water bottle, but the temperature in the house was barely different from outside.

That’s why when I come in from my late shifts now and it’s cold weather, DH puts the heating on so I’ll be walking into a warm house!

FruitPastilleNut · 19/09/2022 16:43

A jumper/other extra layer only works if the air around you is already warm. It won’t magically heat you up

How could you possibly think this is true? 😂

SecretVictoria · 19/09/2022 16:46

VioletInsolence · 19/09/2022 15:15

Um the air is warmed by the heat from your body….. :s

I didn’t have any! As I’ve said, I was cold to the bone!

I went out with my friends for lunch one day, walked into the house early evening. My LLs were sat there in outdoor coats and scarves and they STILL wouldn’t put the heating on!

They knew they were UR though, as one might some friends/family of theirs came round for a party and the heat was on all night!

Mischance · 19/09/2022 17:10

A jumper (singular) is appropriate indoor dress in winter. Two isn’t.

What is inappropriate about two? If the temperature is such that two are needed then it is by definition appropriate.

HintofVintagePink · 19/09/2022 10:22

Our wood burner has been laid ready for lighting for a few days. I was half tempted to light it this morning with the DC home from school - now I’ve read this thread I’ve put a jumper on them each instead 😂.

When is the acceptable date to light the first fire? 🤔

I live in Scotland. I had several fires in August. Had one every day the last two weeks! When it’s cold it’s cold. It was 4c here this morning!

Zib · 19/09/2022 17:38

OP I sympathise and I expect I will be saying 'put a bloody jumper on' quite frequently until May next year.

bellac11 · 19/09/2022 17:42

The price of wood has gone up so we are going to try to avoid using it this early in the year, its coldest around Dec, Jan and Feb, way too early to have heating on at the moment

Socks, thermal leggings, jumpers, hot water bottles and blankets are whats needed, if still cold after that then put it on by all means

The only reason your body wouldnt generate heat is if you were dead.

Exactly. I often wear two in the house on winter evenings. Lightweight merino jumper with a hoodie on top. It's cosy and comfortable.

Cats4life · 19/09/2022 17:48

See I’d be a bit like this…. If the actual room isn’t hot I will be so cold my extremities are numb, so my body temp will be fine and my torso and limbs fine but my fingers, toes and nose remain ice cold and literally won’t warm up until I shower or heat up the room

Bestcatmum · 19/09/2022 17:48

I won't be having any heat on this winter because I cant afford it. I'm absolutely fine in jumpers, thick socks and an oversized hoody top. I grew up on a farm in the 60s with no heating other than a small open fire.
Thermal clothing is much better and much more comfy these days. I also keep active. I dont sit about watching TV all day. I am busy.

TheChippendenSpook · 19/09/2022 17:49

FurAndFeathers · 19/09/2022 13:34

So you’re saying your core body temperature dropped below room temperature?
uh huh.
you know that’s impossible weithout severe hypothermia and a bit daft to suggest right?

I'm just saying that once I'm cold, I find it hard to get warm just by adding more layers. I might have something wrong with me though as I'm nearly always cold.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 19/09/2022 17:50

100% agree! Same goes out to the 'AIBU to put the heating on' numpties too...

Put a fecking jumper or cardigan on and some thick socks. How the fuck do these people get through life FGS? And how are they going to survive the WINTER if they're soooooooo COLD that they need the HEATING on in mid September.

Get a grip people!

oxydant · 19/09/2022 18:00

The people that reckon they can't get warm need to just start drinking some hot drinks and do some running up and down the stairs and/or some exercise. 10 star jumps and 10 push ups will keep you warm for the next few hours!

AtomicBlondeRose · 19/09/2022 18:09

@Eeksteek an electric blanket is one of the cheapest and quickest ways to warm up though, so I’d let your daughter have it on unless you’re really very hard up. One that I looked up was only 60w so at 34p/kwh (October prices) that’s 2p/hr to run.

Stickworm · 19/09/2022 18:12

I used to work with someone who would constantly put the overhead heater on above our desk - while wearing strapless T-shirts and shorts/skirts. I would have to open the window as it was suffocating 😂 YANBU.

Bestcatmum · 19/09/2022 18:18

Of course your body generates heat unless you lie still all day. I have to start stripping layers off after just putting the hoover about! Move people. Don't sit.

transformandriseup · 19/09/2022 18:24

Sometimes I genuinely can't warm up when I am cold but it's usually because I am coming down with something. In that situation I find getting into a duvet with a hot water bottle helps. Adding more layers should work in normal circumstances though, I have been hiking in the mountains in Asia where has been below freezing and long johns and long sleeve base layers really helped, I wore a coupe at at time. I often wear them around the house in the winter too before I put the heating on.

Georgyporky · 19/09/2022 18:29

"When is the acceptable date to light the first fire?"

No such thing. My heating comes on according to the thermostat.
It was on briefly yesterday, but not today.

I have friends who have always turned on their heating on 31st October - purely arbitrary & nothing to do with the temperature or current fuel prices.
I do not visit between Sep/Oct to avoid misery.

stayathomer · 19/09/2022 18:29

it’ll be the first time they’ve experienced cold since the winter so their body will get a bit of a shock. Later in the winter their body will be trying to adjust to colder temperatures and then when it gets worse their bodies will do the same. I can totally understand why they’re cold now.

PicturesOfDogs · 19/09/2022 18:38

I’m with you.
Once the cold gets in me, no amount of layers gets rid of it.
I usually have to have a hot bath to get warm, otherwise it feels like the cold is in my bones.
No amount of layers will shift it.

I expect the people who don’t understand are the same people who will say ‘I hate being hot, heat is worse than cold, as it’s so much harder to cool down than warm up when for me it’s the complete opposite.
Can cool down quite easily but very hard to warm up.
