To put the heating on?

I know, I know! It’s only September, it’s not that cold outside, even. I was hoping to hold out through October, as we’re already broke. But I’m freezing! It’s 17°C in here. I was fine walking the dog and mowing the lawn in just a sweatshirt earlier, but now I’m wrapped in a blanket on the sofa and I’m still cold. My nose is running, my feet and fingers are frozen, my kiddo is in bed in fleecy PJs and an oodie and if I don’t put the heating on, I’m bloody going to bed, too. 17°C felt cold in March, too, but I wasn’t expecting it indoors, during the day, in September. Yesterday I wore two sweaters and two pairs of socks!

I’d expected to tough it out longer, and I didn’t expect it feel so cold, so soon. I don’t see how I’m going to manage the bills if I start putting the heating on and using up my credit already, but I can’t imagine being this cold indoors for eight months, and I feel like such a wuss! 17°c wouldn’t bother me outside at all, but inside it feels awful.

Its not just me is it? 17°c isn’t room temperature for a reason?

We put it on the other day. You could tell it hasn't been on for months because of the smell you get when the radiators haven't been used in months!

I'll put it on when I want in all honesty. I'm not having a cold home.

sarahc336 · 20/09/2022 06:25

We've had ours on a little bit the last few mornings, the house had started to feel colder than outside so needed a quick warm through 😂 I will try and be mindful more with what's going on but I refuse to sit freezing in my own home. If you want your heating on then people should just put it on 🤷🏻‍♀️ x

Iknowforsure1 · 20/09/2022 06:55

I didn’t feel the need yet. Yes it’s getting colder at home but socks and cardigan/fleecy jumper can easily fix that. I don’t feel uncomfortable at all. In the night I even open the window a little bit because I just need some fresh air. That being sad, I know it’s getting colder and I’ll switch the heating on the moment I feel I want it. I was going to wash plates with cold water and reduce the time it takes for me to take a shower, but decided to stay comfortable in my home and see what happens next.

Wales here. Still got all the windows open (flat is very damp otherwise). Yesterday I kept my PJs on (wasn't going out as it was the funeral) and put my Oodie on (more for comfort than cold). It's not cold.

Comments such as “do what you like, your house your money” etc… really make me despair for the future of humanity.
It sounds dramatic but it’s really quite serious. Just think if we had had the foresight to use fossil fuels in a more sustainable way when we discovered them rather than being so frivolous.

To think everyone can continue just using as much as they like is barking mad and I’m afraid the unfortunate truth is that if we can’t regulate our own usage it will just be imposed on us.

yoshiblue · 20/09/2022 07:52

It's been cold the past couple of days here. We've been managing with a blanket and a hot water bottle on an evening makes a world of difference.

I also have a relatively cheap fleece king size throw on my bed which I've just added too.

OhmygodDont · 20/09/2022 07:59

Also op it’s supposed to warm up again for a week. Looking at the net it was a few days of over nights below 10c and not back upto above 10c untill one random 9c.

use this time to check for where drafts may be coming in from.

InterestH · 20/09/2022 08:07

A heated throw really will make a difference. I sit on mine and have it over my legs and as much up the small of my back too. They honestly cost very little to run, even on october rates.

Even when I could see my own breath in the sitting room last winter I didn’t feel cold because of it. Maybe my nose but that’s fine.

I only put the heating on for guests and Christmas Day now. Light the stove at 5pm, and open all the doors to heat the house as much as possible before bed. Hot bath also good.

We've all just been in jeans and t shirts inside, it doesn't feel cold at all yet. Room thermometer is reading 20degrees still. I wouldn't say it feels warm anymore but I certainly wouldn't say it feels cold! I don't intend to put the heating on for a good while yet! Jumpers and blankets on the beds will come first!
Everyone saying "it's your money, do what you like" yeah fair enough but it's everyone's planet. Is it really cold enough for heating yet?

That attitude really is appalling in the light of the environmental catastrophe we face.

What temperature is ok, then? I don’t think being cold at 17°C is abnormal. It’s not like I want the house at 25°C! I thought acceptable room temperature was about 20°C?

I put on last year's purchase, a real Guernsey sweater and omg, I'm boiling. I'd forgotten just how warm they are.

I might need socks and some of those fingerless gloves, but the rest of me is roasting 😁

Spudina · 20/09/2022 15:52

I hear you OP. It was 16.5 in my house yesterday and my husband wanted the heating on. We comprised that if it got to 16 we would put it on but it didn’t. He’s working from home today and is cold, so I’m guessing that the heating will be on when I get in. Though I’m hoping he tries the new heated throw instead!! I was hoping to hold out till October but (due to him indoors, who I might have to send back to the office!) we aren’t going to last that long.

N1no · 24/11/2022 16:56

Our heating is still off.

Is there anyone else who hasn’t put the heating on yet?

I do it mainly ouf of principal with the nice advantage of saving some money. I’m refusing to pay for Putin’s weapons so there is minimal cooking (gas), no heating and no hot water.

InterestQ · 24/11/2022 17:27

i haven’t put the central heating on at all yet - I have lit the log burner though and I did put the small oil heater on in the kitchen for an hour or so which with the oven on as was batch cooking brought the temp up to 21C anyway.

NOT having the central heating on does mean I can use the tumble drier once or twice a week and the oven instead of the slow cooker plus a hot bath or shower on demand.
