To put the heating on?

Eeksteek · 18/09/2022 18:08

I know, I know! It’s only September, it’s not that cold outside, even. I was hoping to hold out through October, as we’re already broke. But I’m freezing! It’s 17°C in here. I was fine walking the dog and mowing the lawn in just a sweatshirt earlier, but now I’m wrapped in a blanket on the sofa and I’m still cold. My nose is running, my feet and fingers are frozen, my kiddo is in bed in fleecy PJs and an oodie and if I don’t put the heating on, I’m bloody going to bed, too. 17°C felt cold in March, too, but I wasn’t expecting it indoors, during the day, in September. Yesterday I wore two sweaters and two pairs of socks!

I’d expected to tough it out longer, and I didn’t expect it feel so cold, so soon. I don’t see how I’m going to manage the bills if I start putting the heating on and using up my credit already, but I can’t imagine being this cold indoors for eight months, and I feel like such a wuss! 17°c wouldn’t bother me outside at all, but inside it feels awful.

Its not just me is it? 17°c isn’t room temperature for a reason?

Where are you all? It’s not even on my radar yet.

Snowpaw · 19/09/2022 16:35

I felt like putting it on today but once I'd done some chores and things I soon warmed up, and had a cup of tea. Then when the oven came on to cook tea it warmed up a bit. I'm being really mindful of what I'm using and wearing thermal underwear / thick socks. I will probably start putting it on in the mornings for an hour in a few weeks, but trying to use other ways to warm up for now.

columbo83 · 19/09/2022 16:36

Ours is on has been on and off past few weeks.

Perthshire it’s a balmy 15 degrees outside just now. Single figures overnight with a penetrating damp.

ouch321 · 19/09/2022 16:43

A week ago my phone showed 27 degrees one mid afternoon, today my bare feet are really feeling the cold.

I wish it would spend more time at the 20 degree kind of temps rather than going from the high20s and 30s we had for weeks and then dropping to rain, wind and 15 degrees.

JadeSeahorse · 19/09/2022 16:47

Not put the CH on yet as house generally warm and well insulated.

We have just started lighting the gas fire in the sitting room for a few hours since the weekend.

That’s fair enough it’s always the damp that’s the worst.

I’m SW sat in a t shirt and swam in a 14 degree river yesterday. Although did need my onesie afterwards.

Simonjt · 19/09/2022 17:11

I don’t get the whole “oh its only september” if you’re cold at 15 in november, you’ll be cold at 15 in september.

Funkyblues101 · 19/09/2022 17:17

10 Burpees every 20 minutes will keep you warm (and fit). If you are broke already then why would you not warm yourself up naturally?!

Fundays12 · 19/09/2022 17:20

I put mine on for 30 minutes yesterday and re programmed it to go on at 18 instead of 17. It hasn't yet but I have a new build which is a warm and we'll insulated house with thermal curtains and thermal blinds everywhere.

JaninaDuszejko · 19/09/2022 17:31

Ours has started coming on low, we have it set to 19C, the house rarely drops below 17C so it's not a massive increase but the house feels cold if I get up before the heating comes on. It's single figures outside tonight so it doesn't surprise me that the heating is coming on.

I do feel like pointing out that when we last holidayed in Italy (in October) it was 26C outside but the owner had put the heating on for us. We laughed but it did feel cool in the flat, it was a very old building in the centre of Florence that didn't warm up the way houses here do.

LondonQueen · 19/09/2022 17:36

Definitely heating weather!

I was at my friend's house in Perthshire last night and we had the heating on, she's someone who is pretty frugal with heating so I was surprised she had it on.

I'm slightly further south and have had my heating on for a couple of short blasts a couple of times in the past week when it was 9 and 8 degrees outside. It's 16 here right now and I'm comfortably wearing a t-shirt and crocs!

ConsuelaHammock · 19/09/2022 18:04

I’ve lit the fire in the living room
the last couple of days. Heating has remained off throughout the rest of the house. We tend to heat one room and use it in the evenings. We always have throws and blankets to put over our knees.
Can you get a small heater for the room you work in ?

Snog · 19/09/2022 18:28

I've stopped wearing shorts and started wearing socks. Put a blanket over my summer weight duvet. Windows still open 24/7.

fruitstick · 19/09/2022 18:50

I bought a heated throw.

It might be a false economy as it as £60 but it's cheap to run and super cosy.

We sit under that watching TV and it's lovely and toasty.

LetMeSpeak · 19/09/2022 18:56

I’ve not changed my lifestyle at all. I simply won’t pay the bills if they are too much

BetsyBigNose · 19/09/2022 19:12

Personally, I would try hot water bottles first, but if you want to put the heating on, go for it!

OhmygodDont · 19/09/2022 19:34

I don’t think mines been on the thermostat is set to 17c but during the day everytime I’ve looked it’s been around 22c.

I have noticed it feeling cooler but myself and the younger two children have thermal vests and leggings if we wish. Also all bed have two duvets plus blankets plus thermal blackout curtains upstairs so it will come on when it does I guess. Still drying washing outside. The greenhouse thermostat got to 10.5c over night.

Muststopeating · 19/09/2022 19:38

Well I've just caved, but my lounge just hit 13.7°C!!! Its been 14/15°C all week and we've toughed it out (including 3 kids under 5)... but sub 14 felt a tad severe.

Was bloody determined to make it til October, or at the very least til my oil tank was refilled (so I can accurately measure the efficiency of my new boiler). On the brightside, its made me realise that we can have the thermostats to 17C and it really isn't that bad.

Where are you all? It’s not even on my radar yet.

East mids. Up until Friday I had the door open day and night for my sick dog. I started to close it Saturday because I was feeling cold, and then Sunday I very suddenly felt miserably cold. Today it has been 18°C, and while I wouldn’t call it comfortable, it’s OK. 17°C just isn’t. Previously, I have set my kitchen thermostat at 19°C all day, my sitting room at 21°C in the evenings and my bedroom at 21°C when I get up, then off all day. Office at around 20°C, but I have a heat pad at my feet. Seems pretty normal to me.

My plan was to keep building credit until the end of September, break even in October, then use my credit and DD to see us through the actual winter. I’d expected a few chilly mornings, but thought I could tough it out. I wasn’t expecting to be so cold, for so long, so soon.

I usually really like autumn. I have lots of veg from the garden stored, have not previously been worried about heating bills, quite enjoy dark, cosy evenings with hot chocolate and my knitting, and generally feel well prepared and content. The drought has meant I have had very poor harvests this year and and I have almost no stores, am worried about heating and have some other problems to solve. It was all a bit miserable and overwhelming yesterday. I felt ill-prepared and like I’d fallen at the first hurdle. I have not been in a position where I need to ration my heat before. (In fact, my life has rather gone to shit. This time last year I was shopping at Waitrose, and planning a new kitchen. Now, despite major budget cuts, I’m severely rationing the heating, my car service is months overdue because I can fund it and I’m keeping my Aldi budget below £20 a week for two people. I was feeling quite sorry for myself! I am taking action, but it’s uphill work and is not going as fast as I’d hoped)

Urgh @Eeksteek that sounds so miserable hope you’re able to stay on top of it all 💐

Your body, your house, your money

Knock yourself out, no need to worry what anyone else thinks 😂

That attitude really is appalling in the light of the environmental catastrophe we face.

PinkSyCo · 20/09/2022 05:37

Your ‘kiddo’ is in bed, presumably under covers, wearing fleece pyjamas and an oodie?! Bloody hell, aren’t you worried about them overheating as it is, let alone if you put the heating on?! And why are you so cold if it’s 17 degrees and you’re wrapped up in a blanket? Unless you have some sort of condition I find that strange, or perhaps you’re coming down with something. Either way if you’re close just chuck an extra layer on or add another blanket surely. 🤷🏻‍♀️

PinkSyCo · 20/09/2022 05:38

If you’re cold, not if you’re close.
