Shops closed for 1 day - who took all the milk?

HoppingKangaroo · 18/09/2022 15:48

Just went to aldi and the shop is packed. All the milk was gone (all sizes and types) expect for 4 packs of whole milk 4 pinks size. I have never seen the milk shelf so bare. Is it because the shops will be closed for one day people are going buts and buying lots at the shops?

Could be. Combined with the fact that unlike at, say, Xmas the shops haven’t had much chance to amend their supply to allow for the bank holiday.

I went to Sainsburys earlier and it was very very (very very) busy.

livingunderacloud · 18/09/2022 15:56

Same in Morrisons earlier. I went around midday and got one of the very last semi skimmed. I'd bet it's all empty by now. Tills were chaos and the assistant was moaning that they had not been allowed to bring in extra staff today even though everyone knew it would be so much busier than a normal Sunday.

ilovesooty · 18/09/2022 15:56

Loads in Lidl when I went at lunchtime.

LovingTheseAutumnSnippets · 18/09/2022 15:58

Just went to 2 supermarkets to get some things. It was packed.
There are no limes left anywhere. I reckon everyone has stacked up on booze to get through the funeral tomorrow.

OK, so I did buy some beers on offer.

MuggleMe · 18/09/2022 16:01

This time last week the milk section was bare in our local Aldi. They said it was eco people protests that had stopped delivery.

Floralnomad · 18/09/2022 16:07

Our local , large Tesco hasn’t had any 4 pint semi skimmed Cravendale for over a week .

Womencanlift · 18/09/2022 16:18

As a pp said for normal bank holidays stock and deliveries will be prepared for well in advance.

To the shops they were planning for this to be a ‘normal’ weekend so no contingency for people stocking up because it’s closed tomorrow and potentially families getting together, either for the funeral or just taking advantage of the day off

LittleBearPad · 18/09/2022 16:20

Same in Waitrose. It was madness

whirlyhead · 18/09/2022 16:21

My local large sainsburys was really quiet at lunchtime today.

TwinkleToesStrikesAgain · 18/09/2022 16:23

No scones in waitrose. I've drafted the latter to my MP

APurpleSquirrel · 18/09/2022 16:24

Just been in Tesco & it was heaving.
We got milk from a local farm milk vending machine on the way home.

stuntbubbles · 18/09/2022 16:25

Sorry, it was my DP. He’s reacting to the one (1) day closure like a combination of doing the Christmas food shop and March 2020 lockdowns.

Wanda616 · 18/09/2022 16:25

Milk&More are delivering tomorrow.

Munchyseeds2 · 18/09/2022 16:25

No milk in sainsbury here earlier either

Abraxan · 18/09/2022 16:26

Dh took Dd to Morrisons earlier after we'd moved her back into her student house, whilst I stayed and hung stuff up etc. they said the fresh counters and shelves inc milk and bread were really low. They couldn't really get some stuff at all so she will have to go again next week.

mum2jakie · 18/09/2022 16:27

Both Sainsbury's and Morrisons were busy today. Morrisons had barely any salad items left this afternoon.

LubaLuca · 18/09/2022 16:29

Thinking of it in terms of my milk delivery, everything I'd normally get tomorrow was delivered yesterday, so I've had twice as much milk as I normally do. Presumably those who buy it in the supermarkets will have been doing the same - buying as much as they'd usually get on two trips to the shop. I imagine supermarkets aren't able to store milk in double volume, or double their order with little notice.

Belledan1 · 18/09/2022 16:31

Did my big shop Friday but Ds drinking loads of milk. None in morrisons today. Managed get one local shop. Did cost double though.

There is quite a few posts like this.

I normally think mn is full of really intelligent people, and then a thread like this comes along.

Of blooming course shops are busier today. They're closed tomorrow. So people who'd shop tomorrow have to shop today.

Of blooming course they will run out of stuff today. Surprisingly, they can't magic up space on their shelves to hold both Sunday and Mondays milk requirements today.

Grapefaced · 18/09/2022 16:35

We went to town today and it was a nightmare. Full of people clearly more accustomed to shopping on a weekday based on their dithering.

Bottomofthepileasusual · 18/09/2022 16:37

Our big Tesco was mad busy. No scones or clotted cream after I'd promised DD an after tea tomorrow. Resigned myself to making scones when Lidl had both whew
Should have gone there in the first place

CandidaAlbicans78 · 18/09/2022 16:40

The supermarket had very Xmas Eve vibes today. But without the excitement and it made me slightly less stabby. From the look of the booze aisle, old Queenie is having some wake.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 18/09/2022 16:51

There was a distinct lack of basic stuff available in our Tescos, no potatoes, whole chickens, diced beef, parsnips and other stuff so that was my plan for a chicken roast dinner today and slow cooked beef stroganoff tomorrow, as well we meal planning for when I'm back in work on Tuesday, out the window. There were the same crowds as during Christmas food shopping, but unlike at Christmas when there are piles of extra stuff to cover demand, they clearly had failed to realise the impact of a full day weekday closure would have on people's ability to shop for normal food items. Or maybe their supply chains couldn't cope with it.

Whatever it was, my blood pressure must have been through the roof because by the time I was walking out of there more or less empty handed, it took me all my strength not to punch a giant cardboard cutout of the Queen near the exit.

It's complete madness for everything to close all day for this and costing the country millions, as well as causing untold hassle for everyone. I don't know why there couldn't have just been partial closure of services and shops, like a half day or something. I mean, what are people going to do the rest of the day tomorrow, sit with a sad face so as to be respectful? I just don't get it.

Glittertwins · 18/09/2022 16:52

The Arla distribution centre in Hatfield was hit by activists who destroyed HGV tyres.

But this is the point. Why on earth ARE shops and other services closing for the whole day?
