Shops closed for 1 day - who took all the milk?

Just went to aldi and the shop is packed. All the milk was gone (all sizes and types) expect for 4 packs of whole milk 4 pinks size. I have never seen the milk shelf so bare. Is it because the shops will be closed for one day people are going buts and buying lots at the shops?

I did my weekly shop earlier and I was expecting it to be horrendously busy but it was actually fine, got through the scan and go checkout with no delay. The lady who came to authorise my restricted items said it had been busy in the morning, but there was still plenty of milk, bread etc. I was expecting something like the first few weeks of lockdown with panic buying galore but luckily that wasn't the case here.

Our Tesco closes on Christmas Days and Easter Sunday. Even on the bank holidays of Boxing Day and Easter Monday it is open for most of the day (short days, not 24 hrs, which is fair enough). It is a silly decision to close for the whole day tomorrow, but of course people don't like to be seen as being "disrepectful" or be the first to say at a planning meeting "um, why don't we just close for the funeral plus an hour either side?"

Greenpolkadot · 18/09/2022 16:58

Maybe lots of people decided to shop early for the bank holiday

WhatsitWiggle · 18/09/2022 17:01

I've been away with work since last Sunday, so the bank holiday was announced whilst I was away. Got home at 2am this morning, so I'm very disoriented. Went to Lidl to do my weekly food shop and the shelves were empty! Had planned to go to Tesco after but forgot it was a Sunday so shops closing at 4pm. And there's nothing open tomorrow - as if it's Christmas.

Wasn’t there a time when all shops were closed every Sunday? I believe in Germany this is still the case. How did people ever cope with not being able to shop all the time?

I think we've worked that one out. But why do people need to buy a week's worth of stuff when they are closed for one day. There will be so much food waste.

There was no need to close for the full day. They could have easily opened at 1pm once the funeral was over. I wonder how many people have lost a day's wages tomorrow because they are on zero hours contracts and only get paid when they work.

They used to do it on a Saturday and Saturday was heaving. Although women worked less as well so there was more time in the week.

I imagine the smaller supermarkets will be open tomorrow like Sainsburys Local etc.

And even in Germany shops are open on Sundays at garages, in railway stations etc so you can still buy milk on a Sunday.

No-one needed to buy milk or anything today. You've known that tomorrow's a Bank Holiday and that lots of places will be shut for five days now.

Are you all really so useless that you can't plan ahead? Really?

LubaLuca · 18/09/2022 17:35

I don't think it's caused by people buying more, but by more people buying today. If you normally go shopping for the week on Monday, you'd probably go today instead. It's pretty normal to buy a week's worth of groceries in one go rather than shop little and often.

Went to M&S yesterday. Dead as a dodo, lucky me 😂

Are you really so stupid to realise that in a 'just in time' ordering society unexpected changes in shopper behaviour has a knock on effect?

Roxie99 · 18/09/2022 17:54

Empty shelves Sainsbury's yesterday, roads jam packed today especially going to shops it's one day...

Hawkins001 · 18/09/2022 17:59

sometimes if ive forgot at the big supermarkets etc, i use the small local shops for milk when needed

Grumpybutfunny · 18/09/2022 18:08

Unlike even Christmas Day our local corner shop is closed until 5pm tomorrow. We've picked up milk, bread, baking supplies for tomorrow. Normally we would wait until we were totally out of milk to pop to shop.

It would have been really difficult for us to shop before today for dd. We wouldn't have fit the shopping in the car along with her university stuff. We always like to do a big shop for her on her moving in day to buy the bulky and heavy stuff as she doesn't have her own car. She needed to be there today, not yesterday nor tomorrow, for various reasons. So today was really the only day we could do her big shop. We wouldn't normally do a big. Shop in a supermarket as I do all our own shopping online.

SwanRot · 18/09/2022 22:43

I managed to get everything I need on Friday evening. It's not difficult to plan ahead. You whine like a bunch of kids - just accept some responsibility for not being organised enough..

bettbburg · 18/09/2022 22:44

Plenty of milk and fresh bread when we went.

Yeah, I'm so stupid that I planned ahead and did a quick essential shop on Friday night after work.

Your excuses are pathetic, to be honest. You should try adulting.

The ultimate tribute to the Queen: a long, long queue and a pre-Bank Holiday panic buying stampede (milk, bread, tea bags, loo roll).
