Not move an inch when that man tried to get to the coffin?
Aren't they supposed to guard it?
Asking out of genuine curiosity as I had imagined they would of been first to move had anyone approached it.

We were talking about the same thing. They weren't very alert were they? Maybe the end of a 6 hour shift or all the uniform is too heavy ?

nachoavocado · 17/09/2022 21:47

I think they are vigiling? Not guarding? Or are they meant to be guarding? Spike him with a sword.

Kadj · 17/09/2022 21:49

Just thought here would of been a bit more fight out of them?
Nothing drastic but definitely protecting the coffin.

Where did you see a video of it?

missbipolar · 17/09/2022 21:54

Has there been a second one? The one last night was jumped on pretty quickly wasn't he?

Kadj · 17/09/2022 21:54

Just type it into google- you wont see much but what you do see is police officers tackling him - the guards stay in their positions

OP posts:
Kadj · 17/09/2022 21:55

yes one from last night - I only seen it today

OP posts:
Kadj · 17/09/2022 21:55

Even if the police have tackled it I do wonder why the guards didnt flinch

It will have been worked out who is responsible for which types of security response. Soldiers (they are legit soldiers, right?) follow orders about who does what.

Friend's son got to be a Buckingham Palace guard as part of his duties in Brit. Army. :)

MamMedusa · 17/09/2022 21:57

Because there was no actual threat, the police dealt with it. Had the police not been there or had been unable to stop him then that's where the guards would've stepped in.

Kadj · 17/09/2022 21:59

Oh ok thanks for input - as I said just curious and I suppose in my head thought they would of acted immediately

missbipolar · 17/09/2022 22:01

The guards are more for show and deterrent aren't they? There's actual police/security to act

Jalepenojello · 17/09/2022 22:01

It will all be planned out. Everyone has their role. They’re more for show, I feel.

GyozaGuiting · 17/09/2022 22:02

The military shouldn’t ever touch civilians. For many many reasons I won’t bore you with. But it should only ever be a last resort. The police have the lead on dealing with the public in there.

CaptainBarbosa · 17/09/2022 22:03

Also although they are "guards" they have a very specific job, stand vigil at the coffin.

Problem is really "the law" and where jurisdiction is. The guards have no power to make an arrest or to "assault" a civilian and drag them to the floor. That really is the police jobs.

Also I'm sure the guard with a ceremonial sword in hand is probably going to do more damage then a few coppers jumping on someone 😂

LuckyLil · 17/09/2022 22:03

But the police were not as near to the coffin as the guards. What if a member of the family were standing there? Would the yards just wait for the police to deal with that too?

vipersnest1 · 17/09/2022 22:05

There was an incident with one of the guards fainting. The other guards stayed in their places and the police officers present dealt with it. I'd assume this was dealt with in the same way.

Wisteriaroundthedoor · 17/09/2022 22:05

the police took seconds to get him, the guards were not to move, the police were, and they did,

It took seconds, literally,

It would have been the CP officers job then, again they are met police officers.

I know it's basically "red tape" but the police are the correct "force" to deal with it all.

I however do think had shit really hit the fan and the coppers not got a hand if it, one of them would have stepped in, probably with a Spartan kick from the top of the stair to the bottom for the offender 😳 ouch!

That would mean a threat to life, which is a totally different scenario and has an incredibly different response.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 17/09/2022 22:09

The army doesn't fight with its own civilians unless ordered to do so? It would be a big step for soldiers to take.

+The guards are part of a vigil not protection.

Feathersandothers · 17/09/2022 22:10

@GyozaGuiting can you bore us with it please? I’m interested to know the reasons.

lljkk · 17/09/2022 22:39

My vague understanding is that the soldiers at Buckingham Palace or Tower of London. They could in theory use force. They are carrying lethal weapons. But they have a very narrow remit when they would do that. Otherwise, they stand around looking stern & waiting for a hopefully never event when they might be called into action.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/09/2022 22:43

Their job is to guard the body. What if the guy was a decoy? The guards leap and leave the coffin and jewels exposed.

The police are there to deal with the public
