Unless it was for food, water or for other reasons essential for life?

By which I mean no other country.

Not quite in the same league, but people queue overnight for sales, the launch of new computer games, new books by certain authors, etc.

MbatataOwl · 16/09/2022 12:46

People queued for hours to vote in Sourh Africa's first democratic election.

anniegun · 16/09/2022 12:46

When the first McDonalds opened in Russia people queued for 8 hours to get in.

NipplesSkywards · 16/09/2022 12:47

To see the Pope?

fudgecat · 16/09/2022 12:48

Makes the Legoland queue for flight of the sky lion seem rather tame

SparklyLeprechaun · 16/09/2022 12:49

Ever been to Disneyland, OP?

Tree543 · 16/09/2022 12:49

YANBU I had to queue for over an hour coming back through Gatwick passport control this summer and that was hell. These people have lost the plot.

No. I've done several hours in queues at other theme parks though. But at least there was something worthwhile at the end of those queues.

I think anyone who chooses to join this queue believes their chance to pay their respects to HMQ is indeed 'worthwhile' .

I won't be doing it because I choose not to. I don't scratch my head and wonder why others do though. They have free will. Their right and their choice.

Hushpuppy1 · 16/09/2022 13:14

People queued for hours to vote against Trump.

x2boys · 16/09/2022 13:18

To see the Pope?

My Grandma and Grandad went to see the Pope when he visited heaton Park in the early 80,s but its a huge park and they would have neen able to bring deck chairs etc .

PuttingDownRoots · 16/09/2022 13:28

I don't understand the queue is closed bit... as surely people will just then queue to join the queue?

JenniferBarkley · 16/09/2022 13:37

I'm sure it's happened for other similar heads of state. Here's a story about the thousands queueing to see the Thai king. www.theguardian.com/world/2016/oct/29/thousands-of-thais-queue-in-bangkok-to-view-late-kings-coffin

DH queued for 5 nights on the street to buy an apartment in 2006. Necessary at the time, madness in hindsight.

zippideedoodaa · 16/09/2022 13:40

People queued for 8 hours in Disney World to buy a limited edition popcorn bucket...

Malariahilaria · 16/09/2022 14:08

One time in Zimbabwe I had to queue for 6 hours to get a visa. No way would I do it to see a coffin unless it was my own child.

I queued for an hour and a half for that. Not six hours!

Mamamia7962 · 16/09/2022 15:11

OP - "But at least there was something worthwhile at the end of those queues"

So basically this is just another anti monarchy thread and mocking people who want to queue up to pay their respects.

I'm sure they think it's worthwhile, so really none of your business if people want to queue up to see the Queen lying in state.

People queued for hours to vote against Trump.

Not the ones whose vote was harvested in nursing homes though.

BiddyPop · 16/09/2022 15:15

DH was in South Africa when Nelson Mandela died (and had to do a lot of urgent things as a result). But he got an opportunity to join the queue to see Mandela lying in state. Very similar circumstances, long queue, but nowhere near the additional supports of loos etc. People queued hours daily in the hopes of getting in.

I also remember the queues from their first elections post-Apartheid.

Whatafustercluck · 16/09/2022 15:30

Anyone on Twitter should check out the absolutely brilliant thread about The Queue by curiousiguana

It had me in stitches. As with everything at the moment though, don't read below the line as there's some batshit crazy people taking offence to it. I personally cannot wait to get back to normal, this whole thing has been very divisive.

theyoungishman · 16/09/2022 15:31

I'm in Perth, Western Australia and we had overnight campers and people queueing for 12 hours plus for the following:
Opening of the first Krispy Kreme doughnut shop
Opening of the first Aldi (!)
Opening of the first Costco
Opening of the first Taco Bell

They're all nutters as far as I'm concerned!

ilovepixie · 16/09/2022 15:34

I queued for a Cliff Richard concert a few times, once overnight and one 9 hours. I also queued for 4 hours for a dishwasher at £90 in the sale for my mum.
