AIBU or is there nowhere else where people would quietly queue to join a very, very long queue

Unless it was for food, water or for other reasons essential for life?

To see the Pope?

That is not a quiet or dignified queue. The queue at the Vatican is brutal you need well sharpened elbows and all your wits about you.

I think anyone who chooses to join this queue believes their chance to pay their respects to HMQ is indeed 'worthwhile' .

I won't be doing it because I choose not to. I don't scratch my head and wonder why others do though. They have free will. Their right and their choice.

Thank you

No. I've done several hours in queues at other theme parks though. But at least there was something worthwhile at the end of those queues.

Rude

Hbh17 · 16/09/2022 15:46

People queue for Wimbledon tennis every year - many of them with tents, and in The Queue (always has capital letters!) for a couple of days.
I'm a lightweight myself, so the earliest I ever got there was 3am. Then we wait for those all-important wrist bands....

BMW6 · 16/09/2022 15:52

FML yet ANOTHER queue bashing thread!

You'd think people were being ordered to join the queue by the level of spite and vitriol aimed at those who are choosing to.

Queue bashing thread🤣

NipplesSkywards · 16/09/2022 15:55

If he came to Britain again though it would be @JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon , they'd be lots of ' oh after you' ' No after you' s . Apologising for someone standing on your foot/bumping into you etc Grin
I love being British

Reachthetopshelf · 16/09/2022 16:00

I dont understand the queue bashing at all.
To be honest I didn't want to go purely based on the queue but hearing people's queue survival stories is actually giving me fomo and I now do want to join the queue.

It means different things to different people but the people waiting to go in obviously think its worth doing.

Minikievs · 16/09/2022 16:33

@reachthetopshelf ME TOO!!!!
I can't think of anything worse than queuing for 12-14 hours. But I know 3-4 people that have done it and now I WANT TO QUEUE TOO (I won't, but I do feel slightly like it's a them and us situation. Those that have DoneTheQueue and those of us that haven't)

Minikievs · 16/09/2022 16:36

Plus, David Beckham has just queued. Imagine a) having a queue survival story AND b) getting to spend 12 hours with David Beckham
That's a win win situation

jcyclops · 16/09/2022 16:54

Estimates for the numbers visiting Westminster Hall vary widely, but 1m seems to be the highest.

Every year, the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca lasts 5 or 6 days and pre-covid had around 2.3m pilgrims each year, with 3.2m in 2012. I understand that it is not quiet and orderly as you near the Kabaa.

XenoBitch · 16/09/2022 17:21

I queued 6 hours for Thunder Mountain at Disneyland Paris. There was a hell of a lot of queue jumpers that thought nothing of just walking past people to get to the front. That was nearly 2 decades ago though, so I hope things have changed.

Yes, Beckham started queuing at 2am and spent 12 hours there, no jumping the queue.

RaininSummer · 16/09/2022 19:37

I am more astonished that so many people are able take so much time out of their lives and jobs etc at pretty short notice

Dave20 · 16/09/2022 21:05

I suppose the people that got in as the four royals were on vigil duty timed it well..

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/09/2022 21:07

EasyJet check-in?

Sparklingbrook · 16/09/2022 21:11

Fancy being made to spend 12 hours with David Beckham. Sad When I saw coverage of him in the queue he was surrounded by about 5 policemen.

MotherofPearl · 16/09/2022 21:24

I seem to have got into the weird situation of being a bit obsessed with The Queue and consuming news stories about it (which abound, thankfully!). Blush I find it utterly bizarre and compelling. I had initially thought I may go to the lying in state myself, but the logistics were a bit daunting. Instead, I now have the joy of following all Queue-related stories.

Butchyrestingface · 16/09/2022 21:27

The queue to write a line of prose from one of their novels in the Bronte bicentenary commemoration book a few years ago was pretty long <cough> so I've heard.

People queued for hours to vote in Sourh Africa's first democratic election.

People also queue for hours to vote in the US. Some voters in Atlanta waited upwards of ten hours to vote in 2020.

Scautish · 16/09/2022 22:00

OP, your thread title is basically “why do lots of other people do something that I don’t want to do?”

I don’t like knitting in fact I think it’s very bizarre thing to want to do. but lots of people do and they do enjoy it. It is not wrong. They are not hysterical. I am not wrong to not like it, but I would be100% wrong if I was to condemn those that do.

so if people are doing something which harms no-one then I seriously think you are the one with the problem if you are accusing them of hysteria just because it’s something you wouldn’t do.

It’s not about you.

Scautish · 16/09/2022 22:02

Fuck. Wrong thread. Sorry OP

Unforgettablefire · 16/09/2022 22:24

I've travelled miles and camped out in queues in the past for concert tickets.
People camp out and queue for the new iPhones when they're released.
People camp out and queue for sales.
People queue for all sorts of reasons for all sorts of things for hours/days.
Because it's important to them.
