To think doctors surgeries should not close on Monday

Just read NHS surgeries have been advised to close on Monday. All appoitmemts to be rescheduled. Or is it ok because it's now a bank holiday.

Surgeries being cancelled, Dr's exams postponed 4 months, food banks closed, flights cancelled..people's lives are hurting over this, why should people go hungry cos of a funeral?! Wtf is this?! The country has lost its mind.

As above.

Given the state of the NHS and how many people have already had their operations cancelled or postponed because of the pandemic it doesn't feel like a great move to exacerbate the situation because of a funeral.

We're not living in a dictatorship in which we're all obliged to stand in the street and participate in mass 'mourning'. Life can, and should go on.

And for some people, having a vital operation postponed could mean the difference between life and death.

Agree that it's very hard when schools are closed. Does anyone know why wasn't Sunday chosen instead? It would have been far easier in families.

How would a Sunday be “far easier” for families? Everything would still be closed. Those working in emergency services or things connected to the funeral would still be working.

BigChesterDraws · 17/09/2022 18:32

I mean, if you’re saying it will feel “hard” because schools are closed, why would a Sunday be “far easier”? Schools are closed Sundays too.

I'm a GP and all of the doctors in my surgery were happy to work, but we felt it was unfair to make the admin staff work, especially those who would be struggling with child care. It's actually quite inconvenient for us, because we just had to find other slots for the booked patients, mostly in our own time.

Practice Nurse here. Also would rather be working than squeeze a day's worth of patients into the rest of my week at such short notice. Plus yesterday was manic as Fridays before BH always are.
CCG (or whatever we're calling it now) said to close, it wasn't really up to us. I agree, OP, we should be open.

Agreed
I can imagine being furious if my flight was cut, my operation postponed or my wedding cancelled because of a funeral (that could have taken place on a weekend). Bonkers - still, we are paying ££Billions for this lunacy.............so that must make us all happy 🙄🙄

Janesdufflecoat · 17/09/2022 19:19

Why aren't people angrier that so many people rely on food banks in the first place?

That 12 years of the Conservative party in power has brought the NHS to a point where 1 day closed makes such a difference?

That BREXIT has meant the loss of so many qualified doctors & nurses

That BREXIT has meant the loss of so many care workers which has had increased bed blocking!

This is one of the biggest example of 'Look there's Squirrel' I have seen!

The Govt must absolutely be laughing their socks off!

Janesdufflecoat · 17/09/2022 19:21

Literally people saying that children will go to bed hungry because of a BANK Holiday!

Not the fucking Govt that has been in charge for the last 13 years!

I can't believe what I am reading!

Lots of zero hours and freelance/casual workers and self employed won't get paid for the day, THAT'S WHY their kids may go hungry. Millions of people don't get paid if they don't work.

Zero hours contracts is certainly an issue that should be dealt with by the government. Other governments have made them illegal.

I do understand why it can't go ahead, but I really wish my surgery hadn't been cancelled. I am struggling to stand due to pain and haven't been paid from work for the past two months, as I ran out of sick pay while waiting for the operation. Finally got the date for 7 months after the problem significantly worsened (10 months from original referral for surgery), and will have at least another month before they can fit me in again, most likely two. I will most likely have lost 6 months wages before I can go back to work now.

I'm really sorry, that's very hard. I hope you get your op ASAP and make a swift recovery

Janesdufflecoat · 17/09/2022 21:23

Yep Zero hours contracts are on this Govt too & they are just about to start the biggest bonfire of Workers Rights we've ever seen!

Most things carry on as normal on normal bank holidays, i.e. shops, airports, public transport, etc. By contrast, some people's lives are being disrupted due to the funeral "lock down". GP services are poor enough as it is without them being closed for another day. At least with businesses, they try to "catch up" after an enforced day off, but GP surgeries will just saunter on as normal with the usual difficulties in getting appointments etc.

So much complete rubbish. I wish I could saunter on. Instead of running 100miles an hour. You have absolutely no idea what a GP does every day.

gatehouseoffleet · 16/09/2022 10:39

It's not really a "holiday". It's a mini lockdown.

Anyway, we get too many bank holidays. I'd rather just have the time added to my holiday allowance and take it when I want to.

I feel like it's a mini lockdown. There is nothing open - it feels like a day of propaganda - the country has not gone bonkers, they are being silenced.

Making zero hours contract illegal won't fix the problem - lots of companies say they no longer offer zero hours contracts, what they offer instead is 4 hour contracts - Clarks I'm looking at you!

Southeastdweller · 19/09/2022 10:25

It’s appalling, just like operations being cancelled and food banks not bring open as others have said. We didn’t need this bank holiday, just like we didn’t need those bloody expensive lockdowns.

QueueEtwo · 19/09/2022 20:41

How can a Bank Holiday be 'like a lock down' !

There's so much craziness on this site atm & it isn't the people mourning the Queen!

It was like Lockdown here. Not a single shop (corner shop to superstore) was open around us. Not a single branch of any food outlet. Not a single thing.

Same. Even fast food restaurants closed.

'It was like Lockdown here. Not a single shop (corner shop to superstore) was open around us. Not a single branch of any food outlet. Not a single thing.'

Not like a lock down then because all the supermarkets & corner shops were open! 🙄

Do you mean like Christmas Day or Easter Sunday?

5.2 Billion people watched the funeral today, 63% of the World's population, the largest single event watched or streamed in history!

How popular would employers have been if they made everyone go to work!

PurpleFlower1983 · 19/09/2022 21:18

In my local hospital most appointments were carrying on as normal.

My Dd works zero hours - she had a day where she wasn’t getting paid and had no interest in the funeral - she’d have preferred to be at work earning money - actually so few people I know were bothered - the whole thing was weirdly controlling and totally overblown.
