To think doctors surgeries should not close on Monday

Just read NHS surgeries have been advised to close on Monday. All appoitmemts to be rescheduled. Or is it ok because it's now a bank holiday.

They shouldn’t have allowed schools to close- it’s the knock-on effect of that that is forcing the NHS and many businesses to close because their staff have to take time off to look after their children. It’s ridiculous- schools could have just stuck all the kids in front of the tv to watch the funeral for a couple of hours, the teachers could have watched as well, and everyone else could have done the same.
As for whether or not it’s what HM would have wanted, I think I saw a statement from the King or Buckingham Palace saying no it isn’t, and they didn’t request it, but it’s a decision for the government.

It's a bank holiday! Of course schools should be shut.

My first thought when I saw the news about a bank holiday was “oh no, when am I supposed to see the patients I will have to cancel?”. My clinics are booked so far ahead and there isn’t the space to fit extras in. I was due to have the afternoon off yesterday but instead I rearranged the patients I was due to see on Monday and stayed at work to see them then instead.

Hiddenplastic · 16/09/2022 18:38

I got an email to say that my dentists is closing and it says 'in the event of a dental emergency, ring 111'. Seems pretty unfair for a private dental practice to close and then redirect everyone to the already struggling NHS. At the very least, they should be available for dental emergencies.

MillyMollyMardy · 16/09/2022 18:44

I work in a Dental Practice we wouldn't normally work on a Bank Holiday.

We have arranged to see a long appointment that would have been really difficult to reschedule first thing in the morning and rescheduled everyone else giving them cancellation slots.

It's far from ideal the Queen dying so suddenly....

Tillyboo123 · 16/09/2022 19:19

Yup and parliament closes for 10 days whilst us plebs are on our knees

Sweetlikechocolate6 · 16/09/2022 19:23

They were already closed Friday and Monday in our area due to a local bank holiday

It's only one day. I never realised so many people would be up in arms about getting an extra blank holiday. Britain has precious few of them as it“

do you ever look outside of your own bubble?
if food banks are closed on Monday children will be going to bed without food.
if surgery appointments are cancelled, sick people will be waiting weeks or possibly months for another.
our daughter had to postpone her very humble wedding plans twice because of Covid. There will be countless others, many of whom thought that they would, finally, be married on Monday. They won’t be.

there are no doubt countless other knock-ons (other oriole’s funerals, perhaps, I don’t know: are crematoria open on bank holidays?) but those are my own personal concern.

Please, think of other people. Isn’t that what Ma’am did for 70 years? I don’t know, of course I don’t, but if she is the person people are saying she was, do you really believe she would have wanted such repercussions? Personally I don’t think so.

So should schools have been forced to stay open? School staff are not second class citizens, just there to provide a babysitting service to make life convenient for the masses. Imagine the uproar if the had followed your advice - 'my child has watched television for a couple of hours, they are at school to learn, teachers have too many holidays already etc, etc......😤

wb3 · 16/09/2022 22:09

Once the schools shut everything else falls like dominoes.

EndTheMonacyNow · 16/09/2022 23:33

Do you think the Queen knew what would happen when she died. I can't imagine anyone wanting such a elaborate period of mourning. If the Queen knew this is what would happen and that weddings, funerals ( I think?) doctors/hospital appointments and other things like Doctors exams would be cancelled doesn't that seem strange? I can't imagine anyone choosing that to happen for their own funeral even if they were the Queen.

If the Queen didn't know this was going to happen then you would think that the people organising it should stop and think about what the Queen would have wanted.
It's all very strange.

I think places closing the entire day is unnecessary, especially supermarkets. The day before is a Sunday too so what if you can't make it to the supermarket in the days before? What if you don't get paid until after that Monday?
I can understand places having bank holiday opening hours, but closing all day like Xmas day is just too far.

feel sorry if people don't have £10 on Sat to buy Food for Sunday and Monday. Are there any people who couldn't live because no shop is open on Monday? really ridiculous point of view.

again, all day close is to show respect to the queen...

fassnk · 17/09/2022 08:43

Our GP surgery is still open, as I have an appointment and they called to confirm it was still going ahead.

I don't really get your point..
People can shop Sunday. If they usually get benefits on Monday that would have been paid on Friday.
Co-op is open from 5pm as are small convenience stores. No one will starve apart from people who usefood banks but we all know those in charge don"t care about that.
Fyi I work in a supermarket and am working from 5.45am and no I will not be getting a day in lieu do I care? No I don't. Because it's shift work people have been moved round to accommodate their contracted hours. If i wanted it off it would cost me annual leave and I would rather work.

Glitterblue · 17/09/2022 15:22

I'm getting a long awaited hip replacement on Tuesday. If it had been on Monday and been cancelled I honestly don't know what I'd have done, I'm in such extreme pain every minute of every day. I have no life. I can't walk without crutches, I can't drive, I can do very little. My mental health is already at an all time low, I can't imagine what I'd have felt like if I'd had to wait another few weeks or months.

HumpreyDowny · 16/09/2022 10:35

Surgeries being cancelled, Dr's exams postponed 4 months, food banks closed, flights cancelled..people's lives are hurting over this, why should people go hungry cos of a funeral?! Wtf is this?! The country has lost its mind.

Amen. There’s a real risk people will actually die due to these closures.

tigger1001 · 17/09/2022 16:17

"sorry if people don't have £10 on Sat to buy Food for Sunday and Monday. Are there any people who couldn't live because no shop is open on Monday? really ridiculous point of view.

Yes there really are people who can't eat because not only are food shops closed but some food banks have also closed for the day.

It's not a ridiculous point of view that some people will indeed suffer as a result of some businesses closing all day.

And for many businesses it is nothing to do with respect for the queen. It's the desperate need to do what others deem to be the "right" thing. Cancel culture is very alive and well. Many businesses only made their decision late in the week as they were gauging responses.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 17/09/2022 16:22

Many surgeries are continuing at my hospital because Monday is cancer and urgent ops. The challenge has been staff finding childcare. Individual teams have made decisions based on staffing.

HumpreyDowny · 17/09/2022 16:35

"sorry if people don't have £10 on Sat to buy Food for Sunday and Monday. Are there any people who couldn't live because no shop is open on Monday? really ridiculous point of view."

Yes there really are people who depend on food banks Marie Antoinette... It'd have been a lot more meaningful if paying respects involved an extra meal on behalf of the Queen rather than hunger forced upon them.

I'm a GP, I can't work in a vacuum. I need receptionists, nurses, pharmacies open, transport to take specimens to hospital etc etc. And a large chunk of that isn't available on a BH, because people have to look after their kids with schools and nurseries shut.

^^ this!!

lavenderlou · 17/09/2022 16:45

You can't start dictating that GP surgery staff are entitled to some bank holidays and not others. If they open for this one, there will be demand to start opening for all of them.

VanishingViolet · 17/09/2022 16:53

DS had a hospital appointment cancelled for Monday, a new appointment has been made for 3 weeks time. I’m fine with it, even though I only found out on Friday after ringing all week!

Moon22 · 17/09/2022 16:53

My GP closes every bank holiday. This one is no different.

Hiddenplastic · 16/09/2022 18:38

There will be an emergency dental service, just as there is on Christmas Day, May bank holiday, August bank holiday, Sundays, etc. it will be shared by various local dentists on a rotating basis. So you call 111 if there is an emergency, as you would on any Sunday or bank holiday, and they will look at the list and see who is currently on the rota and direct you there. The concept of things being closed on bank holidays really isn’t new.

It's only one day. I never realised so many people would be up in arms about getting an extra blank holiday. Britain has precious few of them as it is.

But its not just a BH as such. On normal ones people know its coming. So doctors surgeries, hospitals, crematorium, hospitality etc won't take bookings for that day, in this case theyre cancelling existing ones. In the case of medical appts some people have been waiting weeks or months for. Can you imagine getting a call last week saying your wedding was cancelled because the registry office or hotel was now closed on Monday On BHs most shops stay open unlike Monday
