To wonder what's happening in Moscow?

The Google traffic map shows road closures all around the 2nd-inner ring road around the city of Moscow. Flight Radar shows all flights below 10,000ft are being diverted around the same ring road. I'm hearing whispers of a coup coming from online sources with friends/family in Moscow. Nothing (as of yet) being reported on mainstream media but there is certainly something happening with the roads and airspace. Anyone think this might be the start of the end for Putin?

I hope so! But for me Google Maps just shows heavy traffic on those ring roads which is probably normal. Is the airspace closure unusual?

Initally a tweet on Twitter saying to watch the airspace over Moscow, so I did, and I could see that what they were saying was true. I then checked google maps - basically a red ring around Moscow. It might be nothing, but it's interesting. The live webcams don't show anything so far, but whether or not they're actually as "live" as they should be, I'm not sure

This is mainly why I've posted - the closed airspace could be completely usual for Russia but I can't find anything online to confirm this and wanted to see if anyone else knew.

Reports of an unsuccessful assassination attempt

walkingonsunshinekat · 15/09/2022 12:25

A report in the 'Express (hardly known for accuracy) 3 days ago said Chechen fighters sent back to Moscow to bolster his guard.

Seems to be more open criticism of Putin/Ukraine more recently.

Far interesting than a funeral but what is the BBC focusing on?

Interesting, twitter seems very quiet about it at the moment, but something to keep an eye on.

Igotjelly · 15/09/2022 12:27

Interesting but remember Putin isn’t even in Moscow today.

Loics · 15/09/2022 12:27

I couldn't find any more information but I'm following in case someone else does. It's interesting either way.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think during every other Russian Coup, the leader wasn't in Moscow at the time

Twitter seems to first mention the airspace rerouting 18 hours ago, which would coincide with the hews report of the attempted assassination.

GreenLeavesRustling · 15/09/2022 12:29

This is fascinating. Thank you for the heads up.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/09/2022 12:29

news, not hews. Fat fingers.

I’m not sure if you’re right, apologies I was referring to a possible assassination attempt today! He’s too busy shaking hands with Xi to be assassinated.

Lots of criticism over Ukraine but worryingly lots of it is from pro-war voices who basically just think Russia needs to do ‘more’.

stillherenow · 15/09/2022 12:30

Also heard a report today explaining it seemed an unusual decision for Putin to leave Moscow when potentially under threat, so maybe it was a chance to move against him?

OopsAnotherOne · 15/09/2022 12:32

This also all coincides with a large amount of Russian Officials demanding that Putin step down.

some actually interesting news this week - thanks for flagging, saves me watching hours and hours of televised box!

This is really interesting.

TokyoSushi · 15/09/2022 12:36

Let's see...

Mumofsend · 15/09/2022 12:37

I've been hearing this for a few days but nothing concrete seems to be materialising

Igotjelly · 15/09/2022 12:40

I think a coup, whilst it sounds good, is more likely to result at worst in someone more hawkish than Putin who may well raise the stakes in Ukraine and best case in someone who is very similar to Putin. Putinism in Russia is deeply engrained, it’s an idea more than it’s 1 man.

knittingaddict · 15/09/2022 12:44

I was listening to Ukrainecast today and there seems to be more open critisism of Putin. Also talk of general conscription which would be very unpopular amongst the Russian people.

OopsAnotherOne · 15/09/2022 12:45

Does anyone know of sources where I can find more about the Russian people's point of view. I'm seeing a lot on Twitter but there is no way of confirming that these sources are real and the information they're tweeting is correct.

knittingaddict · 15/09/2022 12:45

I also worry that a coup to get rid of Putin could be worse than him staying in power. I wouldn't be rushing to celebraate just yet.

The Ukrainecast podcast is a good listen. It's made by the BBC, but has many resources which appear reliable. They do talk about Russian media and interviews with ordinary Russians. I think the recent one "What will Putin do next" has some interesting reporting.
