To wonder what's happening in Moscow?

The Google traffic map shows road closures all around the 2nd-inner ring road around the city of Moscow. Flight Radar shows all flights below 10,000ft are being diverted around the same ring road. I'm hearing whispers of a coup coming from online sources with friends/family in Moscow. Nothing (as of yet) being reported on mainstream media but there is certainly something happening with the roads and airspace. Anyone think this might be the start of the end for Putin?

OP I think you are right, something might well be brewing, there have been quite a few voices expressing discontent recently, which was almost unheard of before. Unfortunately, I don't think that any change is likely to be for better (as those voices seem to be calling for escalation, not peace talks).

Thank you for all of the responses so far. I just posted to see if people with more knowledge than me in this area could shed some light and you've done exactly that. So far it seems this may be a case of "normal behaviour" for Moscow. I will still be monitoring this closely though.

I see what you mean about the no fly zone. No aircraft flying over Moscow. Very suss. Something is going on.

In itself it's not really..

I didn't go to Moscow itself very much when I was flying but from memory lowish level overflight of Moscow was never allowed and even at high level when overflying ( e.g. sometime on some routes UK to the far East) the air traffic route structure was such you'd get sent around the metropolitan area, you never got offered a short cut directly over the top.

notimagain · 15/09/2022 14:12

To add:

I'm a bit busy this PM bur I guess if anybody is feeling suitably motivated they could use the playback function of Flightradar, compare today's traffic patterns with previous days, similar time and see if there is a significant difference..

Just seems to be idle speculation on Twitter for a couple of days at the moment. Nobody serious has picked it up so probably BS.

vera99 · 15/09/2022 15:00

Probably misinformation bots firing up to increase the paranoia in Putin's entourage as psyops against him.

Or not the City AM is a well-structured article bringing all the dissent noise together - has a feel of planted intelligence as well.

I subscribe to The Telegraph (cheap Covid deal for NHS) and this popped into my email notifications.

"Prepare for Russia itself to disintegrate".

Maybe something is happening. 🤷‍♀️

I also worry that a coup to get rid of Putin could be worse than him staying in power. I wouldn't be rushing to celebraate just yet.

I agree. Unfortunately Putin must be completely defeated in my view. So much so that he and any possible replacements have no alternative but to recognising it.

XelaM · 15/09/2022 17:21

Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

Sugerfree · 15/09/2022 17:47

For what? A more competent, rational war mongering replacement to take over? In a country that is nostalgic for Stalin, I don't see a gracious admission of defeat on the cards if Vlad is toppled..

Igotjelly · 15/09/2022 17:52

I think it’s important to remember that even Navalny, often considered the ‘best’ option for replacing Putin in favour of democracy, supported the annexation of Crimea.

I read this article a couple of days ago and was going to post about it here but Mumsnetters are not the best to discuss sources outside of the UK with.

Have you seen what happens if you don't support Putin?

So I guess there must be some Russian bots that have picked this thread up by now. Thank you for starting it, Oops, it is very interesting and certainly very relevant, but I am being cautious with what I read, as you always have to be when dealing with any information or what passes for "news" coming out of Russia...

Well indeed, though I think it’s safe to say Navalny has never been afraid to speak against Putin and the Kremlin.

My sentiments exactly. I doubt almost everything I read online as anyone, anywhere can write it. However what I'd read about Russia coincided with an interesting traffic and flight pattern, so I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light. It now seem that gridlock traffic and rerouted flights are pretty normal for Moscow and have been for many years so I'm less inclined to think that it's an indicator of trouble.

Well, let's see. In the end of course there will be change - dictators always fall - but when and how it will happen and what will come after we don't know. Thank you for raising this interest thread, though, Oops.

Doubtful, probably a black ops op
