Just that. It was gut wrenching to watch and it's been in my mind since Sad

Seems utterly ridiculous that they aren't allowed to catch each other. Surely the military should work collectively? If a member of the public launched themselves at a guard would the others have to stay still? Just goes to show how ridiculous this ceremonial stuff is.

DancingBudgie · 15/09/2022 14:28

@CombatBarbie It can and does still happen even with PAYD.
But to be fair, the shit that Sodexo serve up, risking fainting seems a better option.

Fainting and being charged for not having breakfast does not happen. Admin action maybe but not charging.

DancingBudgie · 15/09/2022 16:09

You need to get on the phone to my DD C.O and let it be known that he got it wrong Combat.

Yup, it's just made me think how little the Royals value us all. Having someone keel over and risk serious injury for a dead body. I think the whole thing should be dragged into the 21st century. There were enough people that the one standing next to him could have done something and there been no risk to the coffin.
Or, radical, use seated armed guards.

notimagain · 15/09/2022 16:42

@OneFrenchEgg

Or, radical, use seated armed guards.

How do you know they don't?

The guards in ceremonial dress are mainly there for, err, ceremonial purposes..

Unfortunately as has been attested upthread even with the best will (and diet) in the world people occasionally some on parades, various, not always involving Royals, do come to grief in a face down manner..it's a bit of an occupational hazard.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/09/2022 16:43

@notimagain well if they do, they could do away with the standing ones. I think it's ridiculous to put people into such discomfort (and risk) when it's unnecessary.

notimagain · 15/09/2022 16:54

I know isn't really answering your point but you can't have all the Royal pomp and ceremony which many people love and which apparently draw tourists to the by the bazzilions without the ceremonial stuff such as guards in smart uniforms standing stock still for a few minutes, such as we're seeing in Westminster Hall....

It's probably also fair to point out many nations around the world have at least some ceremonial units doing similar tasks to those being seen on UK TV, so it's not just a case of it being a uniquely British Royal 'thing".

OneTC · 15/09/2022 17:01

The tradition is definitely militaristic rather than strictly royal.

I don't need too, legal review wild pick it up straight away. You cannot be forced to eat.

What was her punishment

OneFrenchEgg · 15/09/2022 17:06

@notimagain yes thank you for a polite response - I just feel very uncomfortable with a lot of traditions. I understand the need for discipline and tolerating hardship for military life, I know training is very important.

CombatBarbie · 15/09/2022 17:07

And I highly doubt it was the CO who dealt with it. OC yes....

Antarcticant · 15/09/2022 17:09

I've found a report which suggests he was well enough to walk out. I'm sure they will be monitoring him in case of concussion but it's a good sign that he was able to get up again so quickly:

"A stretcher was swiftly brought out, but the stricken appeared to quickly gained consciousness and the stretcher left the Hall empty. The guard then slowly left the Hall while other guards held onto him."

Novum · 15/09/2022 17:12

I was feeling a bit sorry for the people having to cope with the mahoosive boots and the helmets, especially when coming down stairs. The boots really don't look easy to walk in, I would have to cling to the banisters like grim death.

BadNomad · 15/09/2022 17:28

I worry more that they'll land on a sword or spear or helmet when they faint. Spikey thing through the face. 😱

@sparepantsandtoothbrush

Why does the OP want an update on the health and well-being of a total stranger

Very weird and unreasonable

The Queen was also a stranger, to most of us.

Papergirl1968 · 15/09/2022 17:34

Not just the guards fainting. One of the minor royals, Lady Gabriella, I think, fainted according to the Mail online.

Sporty2022 · 15/09/2022 18:55

What sort of guard is he? He looked a bit older to be a soldier. So many uniforms to keep track off.
The guards regiment wear the bear skins and are full time regular soldiers.
The beefeaters at the Tower of London are retired military people who’ve completed their full career. It looked there were beefeaters on vigil aswell.

Whos the man the who read from the script to appoint the king? He did the three cheers. The Queens Royal garter or something? Is this a full time job?
Were the trumpet players with the plum’s military bandsmen ?

Anyone up to date with all the ceremony stuff ?

I've been analysing images against the video... could it the Royal Company of Archers, or do they only do their bit in Scotland?

He was from the Royal Company of Archers. You can tell by the hat and the longbow.
