To think doctors surgeries and other public services should NOT close for the queens death

RIP to her majesty, she was a great lady but I'm really starting to get annoyed at these non sensical things.

Her funeral should not mean us normal folks lives are interrupted to this extent.

It's taking the absolute piss that after covid and everything else people are having medical treatment cancelled - the queen I'm sure would not have wanted this

What the hell is the world coming to?

Outrageous and worrying, I don't care how much people love and respected the queen this is completely unacceptable.

Once again, your class determines your bloody cards in life.

Our local hospital is running outpatient services and clinics as normal, which I think is the right decision.

Simonjt · 13/09/2022 21:50

My cousin is a nurse, she is unable to work on the bank holiday as her daughters sch

XenoBitch · 13/09/2022 21:51

I agree, but it should be treated as a Bank Holiday, so double time or time off in lieu.

Simonjt · 13/09/2022 21:51

ool will closed.

Discovereads · 13/09/2022 21:51

If anything is closing, it’s a local decision, not a top down direction from the government. There no legal obligation to close or give anyone the day off.

swizzlestix · 13/09/2022 21:52

Agree!
Our health assessment clinic for children who have just come into care has just had to be cancelled and now we have to try and find space for them probably in about a months time! Many of these children have very significant health needs

Snugglemonkey · 13/09/2022 21:53

I think health services should carry on as usual.

Tabbycat80 · 13/09/2022 21:55

Agree OP. I manage a non-NHS mental health setting and have said we should be open as usual. I went round and asked staff if they wanted to man a reduced service and have a day in lieu or have the day off, all optional. We have a small team working and it's absolutely the right thing to do for any public service.

TabithaTittlemouse · 13/09/2022 21:56

What about the people who work in these environments?

What if we need childcare? What if we want to watch the funeral?

I am working (I’m ward based) but I disagree that GP surgeries etc should be open.

FourChimneys · 13/09/2022 21:58

I know of a surgeon who has operations to perform but not enough colleagues to do so safely. Some are off doing childcare as schools are shutting.

I got the impression the operations would go ahead and they would hope for the best.

Anothermother3 · 13/09/2022 21:58

It either is or isn’t a BH health services are run by normal people with children etc I think it’s no BH if services have to stay open.

GettingOrganisedNow · 13/09/2022 21:58

I understand that some people will struggle to get childcare at such short notice, but I think hospitals etc should be making more effort to keep services going.

I've heard that all funerals round here have been cancelled that day, which seems crazy... you'd think that if they offered double pay, they'd have at least enough staff in to keep basic services happening, even if they couldn't do the full package (eg organists, flowers etc). Most people I know would be happy enough with that, especially if the alternative was cancellation.

WaitingRoomBoredom · 13/09/2022 22:01

I've had an operation cancelled which is worrying. And I think it probably is exactly what the queen wanted because she will have authorised the funeral plans in all their pomp.

Exasperatednow · 13/09/2022 22:02

Isn't it rather entitled to say that some people can have a day off to watch the Queen's funeral and some can't.

Some people deserve to and some don't?

Public service jobs or public servitude jobs?

Btw many public sector workers will struggle with childcare on that day.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 13/09/2022 22:02

Whilst I agree in principal, as a few others have said, maybe the people who work in these jobs would like to watch the funeral/have the day off. It's a bit selfish to say all the places YOU want to be open should be open!

XenoBitch · 13/09/2022 22:03

It is 2022. You can watch the funeral on catch up. What exactly is harming you by not watching it live?

Theoneandonlyjrae · 13/09/2022 22:04

Funerals have also been cancelled

ManxRhyme · 13/09/2022 22:04

You can't shut schools and nurseries and expect the healthcare sector to be open as normal. Unless you are offering to run a creche for the hospital?

Horcruxe · 13/09/2022 22:06

As soon as it was announced the pay for people contracted to work on Monday shot up.

And again a number of people would not have been able to work because of childcare issues.

The people working in the public sector. They have lives and responsibilities too.

We dont want to shut but there isnt enough money to fund a whole day of the GP surgery with extra pay when you've been told by NHS England you can shut.

You cant put the blame on the individual businesses closing, I'm sure most have their reasons.

As soon as it was announced I could see there would be these logistical issue.

Butterfly44 · 13/09/2022 22:08

If you haven't heard it's a BANK HOLIDAY. On every other bank holiday doctors surgeries, dentist etc are closed.
You're ranting about something you can't change.

MyLovelyPen · 13/09/2022 22:08

@Theoneandonlyjrae i heard that today. Devastating. Having only recently lost my (ardently Republican) dad I can’t imagine having to deal with having his funeral cancelled 😢.

Sh05 · 13/09/2022 22:08

It's the same as the jubilee celebrations. Only one out of hours doctors surgery running and zero pharmacies open.
My dad was able to see a doctor after waiting the whole night but there were no pharmacies to collect the medicine from.
If this is what the queen really wanted then she wasn't much for the people was she?
It's a very selfish approach

daysayso · 13/09/2022 22:09

Tbh I don't think anything should shut! It's utterly ridiculous - beyond belief.

Why not do the funeral the weekend at least then? When most people are off anyway.

It's just sickening how the elite get to over rule us

It is also worth thinking about the supply chains for healthcare. If surgeries are open, then pharmacies need to be open. If pharmacies are open, then medical suppliers and logistics firms need to he open. Then anyone who provides supplies and eg catering / cleaning / waste disposal / sterilisation of instruments also need to be open - not because they are 100% dedicated to healthcare clients, but because 10% of their clients are open nationwide. Etc etc etc.

racquel86 · 13/09/2022 22:11

I agree and I will be working as I am a nurse - my dd's nursery is shut tho so I'm in a bit of a pickle 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️
