To think doctors surgeries and other public services should NOT close for the queens death

RIP to her majesty, she was a great lady but I'm really starting to get annoyed at these non sensical things.

Her funeral should not mean us normal folks lives are interrupted to this extent.

It's taking the absolute piss that after covid and everything else people are having medical treatment cancelled - the queen I'm sure would not have wanted this

What the hell is the world coming to?

Outrageous and worrying, I don't care how much people love and respected the queen this is completely unacceptable.

Once again, your class determines your bloody cards in life.

They should have simply had the funeral on Sunday and would have totally voided all this palaver

Typical elite not giving a shite about the common person's life

Charles messed up

I manage an admin team in a hospital and we have been calling patients today but only a handful want to come in so the clinics are running but only afew patients

Most famous people are born into already elite, rich families.

Well yes, but I don't see your point? I was replying to a poster saying this was not about elites but about remembering the most famous woman in the world.

What would have happened pre pandemic? The idea that NHS staff have the privilege of childcare provided specifically for them by school staff is a product of the lockdowns, where such childcare was one part pf schools’ contribution to the national emergency.

Before the pandemic, there would never have been this rhetoric of ‘school staff must give up their contractual rights to Bank Holidays for the NHS’. It just didn’t happen,.

As I have said repeatedly, Charles - as the new titular head of the Church of England - would not have suggested a Sunday for the funeral, because that us against the very long standing tradition of his church and the Queen’s. Not quite as bad as asking an observant Jew why they can’t ‘just do sone work on the Sabbath’, but certainly not anything we could or should expect him to do for convenience.

I agree that Saturday would have been significantly better, but I suspect the lengthier arrangements due to the Queen being in Scotland made that logistically difficult.

Why should nhs staff give up their contractual rights either?

I also think it's bs schools are closing..kids suffering AGAIN

You’re both right is my point. Most famous people are born with elite status. But not all elites are famous. Only the famous elites get such huge recognition. It’s because she was both famous and elite.

farawaytree2 · 13/09/2022 22:56

Also to be fair it only one day after 70 years for a 96 yr old woman (even Sinn Fein politicians said she did more for peace process - despite family members being kilked by IRA - than any paid politician) bout time some got behind & respected an elderly lady (not a man for once) & respected her impact

ManxRhyme · 13/09/2022 22:56

Pre pandemic the NHS would have gone to bank Holiday working. As it is most places are trying to run some outpatient services but as a PP said it is incredibly hard when the rest of the country is in bank Holiday mode. Not just no schools. No childcare full stop. No public transport or at most a weekend service. NHS staff aren't well paid enough to get emergency nannies and taxis to work.

So which day should schools close instead? If they work this Bank Holiday, then like NHS staff, they can either be paid extra (as you know, the Government has not funded even the existing pay offer) or, as happened for the Jubilee, take an alternative day, What day should that be, to deprive everyone of their critical’childcare’ again?

CallMeLinda · 13/09/2022 23:43

cantkeepawayforever · 13/09/2022 22:38

The problem is that it gas been declared a Bank Holiday, so everything - transport, food shops, delivery services, nurseries, banks, social services, rubbish collections etc etc - is closed. It is absolutely not the case that if schools and nurseries were to open , while all other services and businesses took their contractually- allowed Bank Holidays, medical settings could gave carried on as normal.

Once a bank holiday was declared, in the absence of all supporting services as well as some of the NHS’s own staff, the closure of GP services as inevitable.

Yes, but specifically for most medical settings- staff were already rostered on and planning to work as usual.
I am not suggesting schools etc should remain open, to be clear. I am just saying a week(?10 days?) notice was not enough for people to plan or make alternative arrangements etc.

Cheshiresun · 13/09/2022 23:49

I'm a hospital HCP. Our elective lists are being cancelled, it's being treated as another bank holiday when only A&E & out of hours are available.

The main issue is schools are closing, most of my colleagues have school age children and childcare issues if school closed.

jamimmi · 13/09/2022 23:58

We have been told we are expected in if we are in patient facing roles and to take the BH another day. Sounds fine till I say this. If I'm not.in the clinic won't run so another day will be cancelled. On Monday at least 50% of the clinic has cancelled already as bus and hospital transport systems aren't running, it will I can for see be a bit like Christmas eve, one or 2 patients if I'm lucky. I will be paid BH rates to do very little, we have tried to get other patients in but no takers for appts. Then at time when patients do want/are able to come in, clinic will be cancelled as I take my day. The impact will be felt at some point. Yes urgent/ life threatening or cancer treatment needs to go ahead but it seems madness to run the rest.

Didiplanthis · 14/09/2022 00:15

My surgery has been told we have to close, it's a local directive I think. We don't want to.. the last thing we need to be doing is having to rebook appointments and make the rest of the week even more horrendous than usual !

Genuine question- what happens if you are on annual leave? Do they just close the clinic for that time?

jamimmi · 14/09/2022 00:41

Yes exactly that . The clinics I tun are cancelled for the day. Same thing happens if most clinical staff are off who lead a clinic. So we base clinical time on 45 weeks a year. Time for leave 6 weeks , bh, and training and sick.leave

GiantPinkUnicorn · 14/09/2022 07:20

Agree. It is absolute nuts. All so people can watch a bit of TV. Which they can just as easily watch on playback a few hours later. Or could have been scheduled on the weekend so at least childcare would not be an issue. If I had died, Queen or not, the last thing I would want was for thousands or millions of vulnerable people to be negatively impacted by my funeral. It is all turning me rapidly off the monarchy.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 14/09/2022 07:32

I’m NHS in London. We’ve had to close for a number of reasons, childcare being a major one. Also concerns about how staff will get to work with the chaos caused by people flooding in for the funeral. It’s causing huge issues for our whole chain. It’s either all or nothing I think, and it can’t be all at such short notice so I don’t think it should be a bank holiday. People can watch on catch up.

They could have given an extra bank holiday next year in her memory when we had time to prep. I find the level of hysteria over her death is becoming performative to be honest. It’s a major event, and she was an amazing woman and great public servant, but it’s getting ridiculous.

Anothermother3 · 14/09/2022 07:54

but many NHS staff are also contracted to not work on bank holidays and likewise shouldn’t be expected to for the greater good or a clap. So many teams are running on the ethos of people going above and beyond to compensate for understaffing and pandemic catch up. Of course schools aren’t childcare but likewise neither are NHS staff contracted to weekdays obliged to work on a bank holiday where children are off school.

Quveas · 14/09/2022 08:08

Once again, your class determines your bloody cards in life.

I am no fan of the monarchy, but you are being utterly ridiculous. For a start off. who gets a bank holiday is not determined by class. People who are employed get bank holidays - their income, where they work or class have nothing to do with it. And if they don't get the bank holiday itself, many of them will be entitled to another day off at another time, so it is swings and roundabouts.

It's all very well if "normal folk" (because obviously NHS and public sector workers aren't normal folk) get to sit around and have a bank holiday, but everyone else shouldn't? Or they shouldn't have the same opportunities as everyone else because they chose to work in public services? It's small wonder that so many in public service are finding jobs elsewhere - even Asda is closing for the day, but God forbid that workers rights get in your way or inconvenience you.

And FWIIW I cannot speak for every public service, but around here all pre-booked wedding and funerals are going ahead, as are surgeries. That is creating enormous pressure on staffing because nurseries and schools are closed, but employees are doing their best to manage this so that important events can go ahead. But lets take every opportunity to slag off public sector workers, why don't we?

Mfsf · 14/09/2022 19:30

My friend is waiting for cancer treatment and was cancelled on Monday due to the funeral
, I had surgery cancelled twice and guess what cancelled !! I’m honestly tired of this circus . For sure killing people takes away any respect people want to give the queen !!

camelfinger · 14/09/2022 19:33

I think it should have been arranged for the Sunday, with two bank holidays given instead for the coronation when there is more time to plan for down time.

Meili04 · 14/09/2022 19:36

I'm a HCP and I agree. I got into this profession knowing I'd have to treat people day/night 365 days a year. We already have a massive backlog due to COVID let's not make it any worse. I don't think the Queen would have wanted that.

SquirrelSoShiny · 14/09/2022 19:46

The medical appointments thing is pissing me off. So many people are already desperate for gp appointments.

EsmaCannonball · 14/09/2022 20:04

Operations, funerals, etc. wouldn't have been booked for a scheduled bank holiday. The problem here is the last minute nature of the thing, meaning people are in the terrible position of having operations, funerals, events and plans cancelled ... all so people can watch something on television. I get that it's a historic occasion but it's not as important as people's health.
