Help needed from Gluten Free people!

BabbleBee · 13/09/2022 19:35

IABVU posting here for traffic, but I’m desperate.

I have been GF since January, tested negative for Coeliac but I am most definitely gluten intolerant. Found this out in May when I pinched one of DD’s veggie sausages and then suffered the effects.

DD made sausage rolls from my Becky Excell book in food tech today. I’ve just eaten two mouthfuls of delicious, buttery, melty puff pastry which is why it clicked - GF pastry doesn’t taste this good. Then I remembered I’d done the shopping in Aldi where nothing is GF and of course pastry wasn’t GF. Wheat flour is the first in the ingredients list.

Is there anything I can do to lessen the impact? It won’t hit for a few hours, probably tomorrow if the veggie sausages are anything to go by. I’ve got a bloody job interview at 2pm!!

Help! Or maybe just hand hold and tell me crap (pun intended) jokes….

Make yourself sick?

Nejnej2 · 13/09/2022 19:37

Husband is coeliac. Generally finds peppermint tea and Buscopan helpful - although it slightly depends on what symptoms you get with gluten

Wibbli · 13/09/2022 19:38

I feel for you! My DD (6yo) is celiac and suffers tremendously with gluten intake - even crumbs! We were in hospital a few weeks ago as she was doubled over in agony 🙁 I would suggest taking pain killers, something soothing for your stomach and water. Hope it passes quickly!

NugsNotDrugs · 13/09/2022 19:39

I second the peppermint tea & buscopan. I know some people find that apples help.

BabbleBee · 13/09/2022 19:47

Peppermint tea I’ve got. Might have some out of date Buscopan at the back of the cupboard..

Symptoms after the veggie sausage was awful wind to start with, followed by intense cramps and excruciating pain then diarrhoea for several hours.

Painkillers are a good idea, I’ll start regular paracetamol now so I’ve got a decent level in me when it hits.

sageandbasil · 13/09/2022 19:49

God luck with your interview. Hot water bottles have helped more than painkillers ever have x

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 13/09/2022 19:51

My friend has charcoal tablets for this kind of thing - doesn’t help you now but might be worth looking into for future

plantseverywhere · 13/09/2022 19:53

I’m coeliac and when I get glutened I can’t do basic tasks without forgetting what I’m doing and I also get awful anxiety along with the usual symptoms. Horrible. I feel for you! I’m not sure what you can do really - as others have said, buscopan and also hydrate.

BabbleBee · 13/09/2022 19:59

@plantseverywhere I have long covid so I’m living with forgetfulness, inability to concentrate, brain fog… it’s horrible.

@Allmyarseandpeggymartin charcoal… I’ll beat that in mind thank you. I’m considering necking charcoal toothpaste to see if it works like peppermint tea!

@sageandbasil hot water bottle is already on standby.

@Wibbli oh poor DD. It’s miserable, it really is.

@Madamecastafiore that could happen spontaneously unfortunately

Silicea Gastro Intestinal Direct Sachets are a godsend for the after effects.

Wibbli · 13/09/2022 20:11

@BabbleBee just a thought, did you have a blood test / biopsy to rule out celiac? My DS had a TTGA of 49 so he’s off for an endoscopy to rule out celiac disease but it can crop up at any time of life. If you react so badly, I would just check what your levels were (if you have had them checked). The paeds team told me that my son will need to have yearly blood tests as his TTGA was indicative of celiac, so even if the biopsy was negative he will still need monitoring.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 13/09/2022 20:17

Buscopan and peppermint tea

BabbleBee · 13/09/2022 20:18

@Wibbli I had blood IgA test, not biopsy. I’ve had “IBS” for as long as I can remember so was quite surprised when it came back negative. I think I’ve also reacted to crumbs (I ate the top of a cake in Germany and thought I’d mostly avoided the sponge part) but was unwell the following day. I’ll see what happens with this and maybe speak to GP about any further testing

We're you eating gluten at the time you got tested @BabbleBee ?

You need some in your system for the test to be accurate

Hoghedge10 · 13/09/2022 20:21

Sudocalm is the best! Better than buscopan imo, however there seems to be a nationwide shortage and I can't get it from anywhere, but if you happen to have any then take it religiously tonight and tomorrow and I reckon you'll be OK.

Hi, do you know if yearly blood tests are standard? My son scored 128 which is the highest possible so was diagnosed without am endoscopy. He does have follow ups with the dietician but would be good to think could check levels have gone down next year!

@Sunbun19 yes I was. I had to increase my gluten intake for 12 weeks before the test.

Haha I read Sudocrem and thought I’m not eating that!!

How are you doing @BabbleBee? I really feel for
you - I think people underestimate the effects of gluten intake in an intolerant / celiac person. Hoping you have made it over the worst of the effects 💐

DorchaAndLouis · 14/09/2022 14:01

Colpermin capsules help stomach pains when I've been accidentally glutened .
I've yet to find anything that helps the other symptoms.

BabbleBee · 14/09/2022 22:31

@Wibbli thank you for thinking of me. I’m surprisingly ok, thank you. Been taking regular paracetamol, buscopan and peppermint. I’ve had some cramps which are really sharp and haven’t felt 100% but nowhere near as bad as I feared.

That puff pastry was sooooooo tasty!

I get horrendous dihorrea from gluten crumbs in less than 20 mins of consuming, a nightmare in restaurant cross contamination situations! Gastro told me to take immodium in those situations and as many as I need and it works, well enough to get home or through a job interview! I then go home with baggy clothes a hot water bottle and hide under the duvet to sleep it off as I get horrendous fatigue too with it.

MarigoldPetals · 14/09/2022 22:39

Buscopan. Paracetamol. Peppermint (tea or Colpermin capsules), hot water bottle.

VestaTilley · 14/09/2022 22:40

I’m coeliac. I’ve only been “glutened” three times in nearly 7 years. It’s grim.

I’ve not found much helps. Usually I projectile vomit for a few hours, then just need to sleep. However, last time it happened I was in so much pain we had to call an ambulance!

I’m usually ok the following day, so hopefully you’ll be ok by your interview. Hope it goes well! Take anti diarrhoea tablets tomorrow if you need to.

Do you mean Senocalm? Sudocalm brings up nothing 😊
