For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

Why would a child want to watch a stranger's funeral? I suspect no one under 30 or frankly 40 will be remotely bothered.

To be fair, 17yo DS is completely fascinated by it all. I suspect this is what teenage rebellion looks like when you've been brought up by lefty republicans.

MsFogi · 13/09/2022 17:52

It is ridiculous - give us a bank holiday to enjoy however we wish (not enforced/faux mourning)!! At this rate I will have no option but to spend the day doing a home-education session for the dcs to teach them about revolutions that toppled monarchies, all the issues with our monarchy (including topics on their tax loopholes and wealth) and the need for an overhaul of our political system (including how the Queen really wasn't much use when there was an issue with Brexit).

If people have nothing to do they may simply decide to join the protests against the monarchy rather than just enjoy the day off!!

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 17:54

When did MN become this hostile to royalist? I myself am not even a royalist however I had huge respect for the Queen

I have posted enough about this and hope OPs takes it on board maybe just few minutes of the funeral not the whole thing. Then the DCs can go out and do what they could most likely do on any other day.

I also don’t appreciate people criticising and even mocking business who won’t be open on bank holiday. That is a huge decision to make in such a financially hard time and it’s not nice seeing them be mocked for showing huge respect to the Queen. It just seems like every minute certain MNs are using any opportunity mock how people are dealing with this situation that none of us has been in before.

Can you do a live stream. It would be extremely popular!

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

I am a history writer, so the deaths of kings and queens are ten a penny to me, unfortunately! This just goes to show how you should never take another person's perspective for granted. Also, if you spend a lot of time abroad, you are half in that other country, which may be a republic or just has a different monarch. I am surprised how uninterested I am in the current events. I am afraid to watch TV anyway, because I get the impression that the BBC journalists will turn me into a republican and I will go mad online ordering biographies of Robespierre and Oliver Cromwell!

DogInATent · 13/09/2022 17:55

I won’t be in front of the telly dear.
Haven't you heard? Center Parcs is shut luv.

crosbystillsandmash · 13/09/2022 17:57

@GaffNest
More fool you for believing that tired old rubbish.

The royal family aren't a great source of income for the UK.

Yes, they bring money to the country but jesus, have you seen what they cost us?
Are you happy with sex offender Andy and his daughters taking the money they do while decent, hard working people are struggling to feed their children?

London would still be a huge tourist spot without them, particularly if you turfed all the free loaders out of their many 'royal' properties and turned them into historical places of interest.

antelopevalley · 13/09/2022 17:57

@LetMeSpeak We are not in the 1950s. Of course, enforced mourning is not going to be popular. It is pretty disrespectful of the population.

Tellmewhatyoureallythink · 13/09/2022 17:59

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 16:09

well there you have it OP and all the PPs who think they are above watching the funeral. Why don’t you do something useful and volunteer in a foodbank cover for those who are going to be off.

And why don’t you just mind your own business and let others mark the day ad they see fit.

DappledThings · 13/09/2022 17:59

antelopevalley · 13/09/2022 17:40

Other funerals being cancelled is just wrong.

It is an absolute cruelty. Some things being closed/cancelled are annoying. Funerals and operations being cancelled is outrageous.

Whitewolf2 · 13/09/2022 17:59

I think times have moved on, 10 days of mourning and enforced bank holiday, where doing anything other than being glued to a tv screen is disrespectful just seems crazy now.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 13/09/2022 18:00

mmmflakycrust81 · 13/09/2022 17:29

Is the funeral all day then?

Are we not allowed to do anything else even if we watch the funeral? Because absolutely everything is closed.

Its like a really, really depressing christmas day.

Except that if we get a Queen's Speech, something's gone badly wrong...

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 13/09/2022 18:02

The funeral will only take a few hours. And you are not obligated to watch all or any of it. Try and use a bit of imagination with your kids. What do you normally do on Bank Holidays?

tigger1001 · 13/09/2022 18:03

I'm working. We don't get bank holidays off other than Christmas so the office is open as usual.

Kids are obviously off school - but they are both teenagers now so can be left.

Will they watch it? Maybe a little but I very much doubt they will sit and watch it,

We are in east Scotland and we're within a 20 minute drive of the cortège on Sunday and neither kid showed any interest in going to see that.

I'm guessing plenty places in London will be open - shops etc to sell food/Water to people out lining the streets on Monday. Doubt they would get told they are lacking respect.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 13/09/2022 18:03

We are getting together with a family who we rarely get time to see, who have kids of similar ages, and will spend the day chatting and playing games and eating nice food and not giving a hoot about what is happening in the media and not having any need for any businesses to be open

Behave not everyone is a royalist and I have no intention of being force to watch a funeral just because the lady has a title.

You think you have the right to tell other people what to do? Plenty will be open.

That’s pretty sad to me but then I love history.
This isn’t just another queen or king on the throne for 10/20 years though is it?
This is likely to be the longest reigning monarch there has or ever will be. She will likely be in the history books for the next 1000 years and will stand out amongst many others.
To me it’s the end of an era as I think we are in for a change of times going forward.
I personally want my kids to recognise the significance and be able to remember and talk about this time later in their lives.

I have a history degree and my eldest child is a year into one. We are passionate about history in this house. Our staunch republicanism comes from an informed place Grin

PuppyMonkey · 13/09/2022 18:05

I will have a nice lie in and read my book for most of the day. I may watch highlights of the funeral, but I’m not planning to sit glued to the screen.

Can’t understand the daft view that we should all be watching every second just because she was our unelected head of state. No going to the loo or making some food, folks, you’ve got to sit watching that telly otherwise it’s disrespectful. Grin

(I can probably Google this but anyone know if Netflix and Now TV will be available as normal?)

Cheeseandwines · 13/09/2022 18:05

Definitely go to Hawksmoor.

Mojoj · 13/09/2022 18:05

Shefliesonherownwings · 13/09/2022 18:06

Pinkpeony2 · 13/09/2022 17:00

Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’

I really hope you’re being sarcastic here, otherwise the ridiculousness on this thread is off the charts!

My mum was 10 when we first landed on the moon. I don’t think I’ve ever asked her where she was when it happened and if she watched it on tv or listened to it on the radio. Even if I had asked and she said ‘no we didn’t listen to it or watch it, mum and dad took us to the park’ I wouldn’t have given two hoots. And that’s a much more historical even in my mind than the death of a monarch.

KAYMACK · 13/09/2022 18:07

Is it just me or does it feel wrong to have a "holiday" on the day of the Queen's funeral? It feel as if it is something to celebrate!

I think it is more dignified to have a normal working day and, if people want to watch the funeral, they can ask for time off, swap shifts with someone, etc. If you are really such a monarchist, you would take the day off without pay anyway!

It just means shops will be packed at the weekend and on Monday after 5 pm, probably leading to a surge in Covid cases.

What will people do if the weather is bad? If shops and attractions are closed, there will be nothing to do except moon about if the weather is good. I do not think that is a good way to see of QE2 at all. Personally, I would have a normal working day and give every citizen a voucher to buy a drink worth £5 in a pub. You could drink to the late monarch and it would work a bit like Rushi Sunak's scheme from 2020 (most people will buy a second drink from the pub, crisps, etc.).
