Washing getting rained on - how many times?

How many times do you let your washing get rained on before rewashing?

Factors to consider:

  • doesn't smell. Probably dried between downpours
  • been darked on several times
- numerous spiders have definately rubbed their willy's on it
  • yes, neighbours judge my housekeeping. Hell, I judge my housekeeping

@Royalbloo you may well be, your tutting sounds like them. 😆

I won't be rewashing. They don't smell. So no worries about electricity or water waste at least.

Oh and if it's going to be warm the next day, I do sometimes peg stuff out overnight. I don't have time to wash and hang it out in the morning.

I only re-wash if the birds have shat on it (happens rather too often here). Or if it blows off the line and the sheep have mauled it (we have sheep in the garden rather more often than not due to them barging the fence).
Otherwise it can get rained on and dried for weeks if needed. I left some out while we away once for a fortnight. I have no shame.

Depends on the rain. Sometimes the rain round here isn't nice and fresh, it's all sandy and dusty. Makes the car filthy. Would imagine it would be the same for laundry

Is this for real? What's the point even washing it if you're going to leave it outside for days.

To get the dirt/sweat/grime off. They're not going to get sweaty and dirty on the washing line are they?

Yawn. This tedious stuff does the rounds every 2 months.

Msloverlover · 13/09/2022 19:43

Are you me? It was about 5 days last week. Got it in this morning when it started spitting and felt EXTREMELY smug

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 13/09/2022 19:51

I have on occasion done a rinse and spin cycle if washing has been caught in the rain multiple times. I don't re-wash though.

XmasElf10 · 13/09/2022 19:51

3 rains (wetting an re-drying can get smell). My DDis very unhappy about the spider willies though!!

Because it was dirty doesn’t mean I need it again instantly though but I’m also not going to waste energy doing loads of tiny loads. I was all white shirts Friday night. Don’t need them till Monday so they could be on the line till Sunday night. I have a million well closer to 100 don’t ask. Bath towels. They will need washing but again no urgency to need that exact one.

Once. X

One (ish)! Caveat is if I'm out and it's rained more than once, I count that as one when I get home! I sometimes hang it out the night before if it looks sunny the next morning. Got to give those spider willies something to do.

SirenSays · 14/09/2022 00:02

My neighbours washing has been out at least a week. I was just impressed nothing blew away in the wind.

IncessantNameChanger · 14/09/2022 00:07

If its soaking I'd spin it back off. About twice and I'd recondition it. I think three days maybe then I have to admit defeat

UmbrellaLegs · 14/09/2022 00:10

My neighbours left clothes out for 7 days - took them in yesterday WTF? They must stink.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 14/09/2022 07:36

@Orangesare I also leave stuff out overnight when it's hot but I hadn't thought to when it was frosty - I'd assume it would get frosted and then wet when it thawed. What am I missing?

I often leave stuff out overnight in the summer and will leave it until it's dry if it's been rained on. I do however give each piece a really good shake when I get them down because insects - mostly earwigs - tend to crawl into sleeves etc when it's out in the dark. I'd rather shake them out outside that have them suddenly emerge at me while I'm folding inside (which has happened). I once found a bumblebee in the washing, inside. I thought the poor fellow was dead but put it outside carefully and after a few hours it had revived and flown off.

I have just bought a washing line cover so I no longer need to worry about washing getting rained on and needing to be redried. It's a revelation. I ummed and ahhed but I don't regret it.

Sunnyqueen · 14/09/2022 07:46

Where I live now is brilliant, it's 4 of us single women in a row with me in the middle and all of us are always leaving our washing out over night and in the rain so no judgement and no one gives a shit lol.
As long as it still smells of wash stuff I wouldnt wash again if it starts to I would just chuck on a 15 minute refresh wash with some unstoppable. Job done.

sheepdogdelight · 14/09/2022 08:04

I'm starting to understand why our electricity bill is so much less than so many other people I know.

What "dirt" exactly is rain adding to your clothes?

(clothes stay out until they are dry, OP, I don't pay attention to how often they are rained on).
