Washing getting rained on - how many times?

HuzzahIndeed · 13/09/2022 09:16

How many times do you let your washing get rained on before rewashing?

Factors to consider:

  • doesn't smell. Probably dried between downpours
  • been darked on several times
- numerous spiders have definately rubbed their willy's on it
  • yes, neighbours judge my housekeeping. Hell, I judge my housekeeping

What's wrong with washing being out when it's dark? Is dark dirty? 😂

BertieBotts · 13/09/2022 11:08

Darked on is a weird MN thing that if you leave washing out overnight, something mysterious will happen to it. Nobody knows what it is (it may involve spiders) but it is definitely Bad.

I used to leave stuff out overnight when I had a garden all the time! Don't understand the fuss.

I hang out sheets and towels and sometimes they stay out for days.... Live in a hot country so after rain, normally dry again after an hour or so of sun. busy with long work hours and sometimes forget to bring in . Dont care what anyone thinks !

foobio · 13/09/2022 11:44

Infinite (as long as it's getting dry in between and I'm just missing the window to bring it in) or until I need an item from the line, in which case I'd spin if sopping (no rinse) and dry indoors.

SalviaOfficinalis · 13/09/2022 11:11

Why does this get resurrected every couple of years? It was nonsense then and it's nonsense now.

YellowTreeHouse · 13/09/2022 12:18

Johnnysgirl · 13/09/2022 10:40

Why?

Because it needs cleaning again.

Johnnysgirl · 13/09/2022 12:23

Because it needs cleaning again.

After being soaked in water... 😂

@YellowTreeHouse

What is dirty, requiring it to be cleaned again, about rainwater?

(unless you live in central london)

HuzzahIndeed · 13/09/2022 12:29

Darked on and spider willies
ARE nonsense but thought I'd get it in before anyone else does! 🤣

Um so yeah, it's been out for several days. We've been having sudden downpours which would mean it's drenched again in minutes so I figured I may as well leave it and bring it in once the rain stops. Then I forget until it rains again and the cycle starts again.

Don't tell my mum or mother in law!

Put washing in basket - set fire to it

no idea. 🤣🤣. It goes out, it rarely doesn't dry to 'almost dry' at the very least.

I suppose I do the washing when I know I'm going to be home to bring it in (without really thinking about it), but if I was out & it got rained on it would stay out until it was at least 'almost dry' - though I suppose I'm 'lucky' to have a windy spot where the line is, so it rarely wouldn't dry.

if it was soggy in the line & it looked like unrelenting rain I might bring it in and spin it before putting it on the airer, but I certainly wouldn't rewash it just because it's had a rainwater rinse (or 6)

lemonyanus · 13/09/2022 12:36

The limit does not exist

PuppyMonkey · 13/09/2022 12:41

It smells all manky after being rained on - and it goes all stiff and then there’s the dark and the spider willies, shudder.

Life is so much easier when you just put your washing inside on a clothes horse in the spare room with a window open. Even in the height of summer. You can just leave it and come and sort it the next day or whatever.

Pegging out at all is a fool’s game imho.

SudocremOnEverything · 13/09/2022 12:44

This kind of consideration is why I rarely hang things on the line. I inevitably forget about it.

I am shit at laundry. So I operate a survival of the fittest, just in time laundry service. With no ironing.

We are all fully dressed in clean clothes. That’s where I set my bar. Worrying about whether my washing has been darked on is way beyond the scope of this pared down operation.

OhmygodDont · 13/09/2022 13:13

Me I forgot I’d used the spare line a few months back untill I went into that part of the garden and found all the odd socks on the line. They looked ok smelt ok. They are socks. They went in the sock draws.

It it smelt bad or something I’d wash it but unless you live in a very very polluted area nothing wrong with rain water.

HuzzahIndeed · 13/09/2022 17:37

@SudocremOnEverything can we be laundry buddies?
My son's new soon uniform includes a white shirt. I'm terrified of it! Possible more scared of washing it than I am his beloved teddy!

DS2’s uniform now features a white polo shirt. 😱 Previously it was blue.

inevitably they’ll end up in the same load as everything else soon enough. And they’ll be much less white.

megletthesecond · 13/09/2022 17:57

I just leave it.
The bits on the line now aren't needed until the weekend so they can stay there until Friday. Anything urgent will be on rhe airer indoors.

Brideandpredjudice · 13/09/2022 18:11

Is this for real? What's the point even washing it if you're going to leave it outside for days.

Orangesare · 13/09/2022 18:18

I actually peg mine out at night if it’s really hot weather or frosty weather. My mother is horrified by this. But in normal weather I do get it in before dark as it’s tends to get damp.
a couple of rain showers are fine but I aim to dry my washing so don’t like to leave it out for too long! I never rewash unless it smells
basically we all kind of have our own laundry standards and no one else is going to notice what we do so just deal with the laundry in the least time with the least hassle.

Creameggs223 · 13/09/2022 18:29

Rainwater is clean it's not like the washing has been dumped in a swamp aslong as it dries same day or even day after it's fine and won't smell.

Royalbloo · 13/09/2022 19:01

"Darked on" is being left overnight. If re-wash unless I'd just caught it in time.

Royalbloo · 13/09/2022 19:02

And I might be your neighbour - washing left outside for over a week, then re-washed and ignored. What a waste of energy!

Skinterior · 13/09/2022 19:04

I'm just jealous of all of you who can hang out your washing for days and days without pigeons coming and pooing on it
