If you don’t drink what do you do to relax?

I’ve never been a big drinker but I find now even a glass of wine or prosecco leaves me feeling not great the next day so I just don’t feel like the odd drink is worth it anymore. It must be an age thing?! Just wondering what other people do to get to get that relaxed feeling or just to feel the difference between a week day evening and a weekend if they tend not to drink?

Exercise. Lift weights or yoga.

SalviaOfficinalis · 12/09/2022 21:24

Tonic with ice in nice glass. Really gives me the unwinding feeling, even if there’s no gin in it.

KohlaParasaurus · 12/09/2022 21:24

Nice decaf coffee. When we have house guests I always have to remind myself that they might want to switch to alcohol rather than to decaf coffee or tea in the evening.
Needlework.
Flicking around the internet and commenting on threads like this one.
Writing bad fiction that will deservedly never see the light of day.
When the evenings are light I'll go out and walk or ride my bike.
(I do have a drink from time to time, but it's not something I reach for regularly.)

For me, it's about ritual:

So that could be making a gin and tonic (smidgin is 50% ABV but you only use 2.5ml so an almost non alcoholic drink).

Or it might be making sure the table is set for dinner, with candles and good glasses and napkins.

Making a pot of tea with loose leaf and a proper cup and saucer and a little jug of milk on a tray has a similar vibe.

I don't have a skincare ritual but that sounds like a similar set up.

Read, run, sauna, yoga, music, sleep

Ponderingwindow · 12/09/2022 21:25

Watch tv, read, take a bath, make some art. All the normal ways I would use my leisure time. You just have to make the conscious decision to switch to relaxation mode.

Notimeforaname · 12/09/2022 21:27

Few joints, pot of tea, nice biscuits/bar and documentary or podcast.

I don't drink alcohol but I do use a weed vape, but only on the weekend. A couple of goes on it, then a good book and chill until bedtime.

What is a weed vape please? Where do you be buy these and what do they do exactly?

Bollocks989 · 12/09/2022 21:31

Exercise, relaxing, nice teas, occasional bix set, read books, have a bath, gardening, go for walk, phone mum. Early nights.

That's not good. Do you want to tell us why? XX

CantGetNoSleeeeeeep · 12/09/2022 21:33

I don’t drink haven't for years.
if I want a different drink I might have an alcohol free prosecco or kombucha in a champagne flute to feel fancy! Usually listen to music, dance, long hot bath with candles. If I’m easing stress maybe a walk

Givemesunshines · 12/09/2022 21:33

Wd like to gert my head round this too op ! I love the sensation of wine hitting my bloodstream !. Have always enjoyed sipping rather than earimg, plus we go out at least x2 a week so its easy to drink as we are in a pub listening to gigs .
What i have done so far is ( as cuttinf down)
Go on vinted
Crochet
Read
Have discussions
Plan stuff
Make lists
De clutter
Learn new info( so much on u tube)
Go to bed with book
Grattitudes
All of these are relaxing and /or absorbing.

A bath with candles for feeling relaxed and lying on sofa or in bed eat hing a movie.

To differentiate from weekdays to weekends -
Friday night normally a movie night with my dd. (Pizza/popcorn/sweets etc)
Saturday - adult movie night (not as in an adult porn movie lol, just a movie not for kids like a thriller or action type / board games night / friends/sisters round for a drink/takeaway/if nice night out a walk at park/beach/drive/ out for dinner.

Sunday nights - pamper night for both me & dd- bath/candles/face masks etc - nice, relaxing way to end a busy week. 😁

Walking the dogs, reading & Edibles

Weed edibles? Where do you get them from? I quite fancy a go, used to smoke weed in my misspent youth, but never ate it

NeverDropYourMooncup · 12/09/2022 21:51

Go to the gym, for a swim or a run. And rest days always involve a very long bath.

My route to the gym takes me past several pubs - I never used to notice it, but since I stopped going regularly (never went back after lockdown #1), the stench of lager makes me feel nauseous.

oopsfellover · 12/09/2022 21:54

I haven’t drunk for nearly 9 months as it was getting too much. I know what you mean about crossing over from the week to the weekend; that’s when I miss it the most. Non-alcoholic substitutes work for me though.

Fififelix · 12/09/2022 21:58

I have a hot drink, hot chocolate or ovaltine. A warm bubble bath. Listen to music on my headphones cuddle my cat. I very rarely drink unless it's Christmas, birthday or I'm on holiday. I sound like an OAP I'm 29 but it works for me 🤣

Fififelix · 12/09/2022 21:59

A good shag as well where he focuses on me is also very relaxing 🤣🤣🤣

Amazon. We got this because it's cheap and we wanted to test it before spending too much on one. It works but the battery life isn't great.

I’ve been taking magnesium supplements with B6 recently for Peri and I find if I take them in the evening they give me a chilled out feeling and help me sleep. I also get a post run buzz if I work a bit harder than usual. This lasts a few hours and is like drinking a few glasses of wine but with no nasty come down.,
