Hi guys, I want to move back to the UK and am considering giving Scotland a try.
I just spoke to my aunt about it and she said prepare to get some serious attitude. She used to live and work near Loch Lomond! That was 20 years ago now. I have actually never been to Scotland before.

Be honest with me: is what she says true or is she being OTT/outdated? I would live in one of the big cities, probably Edinburgh (not Glasgow).

My three English colleagues get no comments. I love when one woman with a strong English accent says something Scottish without even thinking. ‘aye right!’ Made me laugh a bit.

@thefoggiest Scotland is a wonderful country in my experience DP is English and hasn’t had any negative attitude towards him. I’ve found Scottish people very welcoming and pretty eager to embrace anyone from elsewhere, including England.
I moved here recently and I understand why some people might be defensive about the accusations/suspicions of it being anti-English. They really couldn’t be more polite and respectful in my experience, if you go to almost any other part of the world, say with a colonial past, you’ll probably find the English will get a bit of a ribbing (mainly empire related ribbing) but the Scottish seem to be very careful to not even do that in a very light hearted way bar in the context of sport. And yet people who support independence here do seem to get painted as xenophobic Scots-supremests who want Scotland to be independent because they are bigots against the English. That definitely doesn’t seem to be the case to me, the pro-Indy agenda is very progressive and really not “that” sort of nationalism at all. So I think “do the Scots really hate the English?” question can feel a bit like the propaganda is working and means Scottish people feel like they have to answer for a phenomenon that, if it does exist, is pretty limited in scope- there are probably no violent attacks against English businesses or communities because they are English for example, but at some point living here someone might make snotty remark and you’ll suspect is because you’re English… maybe you’ll be right but that’s probably about the most of it.
