The greys are coming in.

I’m 44 and have managed to only have the odd one long, silver hair I’d yank out 🙈I have dark, long ish hair and there’s a fair few coming in now.
Do you just have to start dyeing your hair when the greys come in? I mean, obviously if you don’t want greys, I think it looks great on some people but just want my dark hair.
Can I pluck/snip them out? Do I go to a hairdresser or box dye 🤷🏻‍♀️Eurgh so annoying, like my original colour and can’t really be doing with extra maintenance

What do you all do?

Don't know if this is a conspiracy from hair dye companies, but I have heard that pulling grey hair out by the roots just encourages more grey hair to grow out of your scalp. So I wouldn't do that personally. I would dye, even box dye if there's not that many.

Whataweirdworld · 12/09/2022 00:06

@Keyansier Oh shit, really! Had no idea

I used box dye for years however if your dark once you get more you end up with a band of grey when your roots grow. I now see a hairdresser get lighter highlights which let the grey blend in.

Apandemicyousay · 12/09/2022 00:16

I thought the issue with pulling them was that you might end up with little bald patches. I developed a few greys at similar age, annoyingly just from crown so visible but thought they aged me. I go to hairdresser who puts a few highlights through just on top to mostly cover and the rest of head is left alone (less than half a head). If you can afford it, better than a box dye where you’ll lose all your natural colour/natural highlights for sake of a few greys.

CrapBucket · 12/09/2022 00:18

Let nature take its course! I decided in my 30s to stop highlighting my hair. I'm mid 40s now and have a bit of grey, but I never look as grey as someone with dyed hair and grey roots.

Tbf I call mine silver and actually think I am pert unicorn so feel free to ignore my opinion! But there is nothing wrong with women showing signs of aging. Everyone lucky enough to still be alive is aging.

CrapBucket · 12/09/2022 00:18

PART unicorn ffs.

One hairdresser told me that but another said it's fine to pull them out. I'm inclined to think that's a myth and it is really about, as another poster said, the risk of creating bald patches.

My mum used to approach me with tweezers every few months, sit on the floor infront of me and have me go through picking out all the ones i could find. Fond memories.

Hakunamatata91 · 12/09/2022 00:52

I pull mine out, have quite thick hair so figure i can afford to lose some! Jealous you're only getting grey hairs in your 40s lol

quietnightmare · 12/09/2022 01:04

@RileyK

I'd ask for your money back

@Apandemicyousay I was thinking highlights, just a few, so it definitely covers it all? How often do you have to have them done?

@RileyK

I wouldn't bother. bless you

Highlights would work op. Or some sort of balayage? Would you consider hena as an option? Or literally home box due and you can just get a small anoint out and dye just those strands

quietnightmare · 12/09/2022 01:11

@RileyK
Always in about spider plants. Though the school holidays were over.

I did the home box dyes for a few years.

It works if you don't have many greys, the downside is that eventually as your grey % increases the upkeep becomes too much. Also, most box dyes carry so much red, and if you just touch up the roots (much better for your hair) the lengths get all faded and orange.

In my late 40s I switched to a combination of high and lowlights so my hair is basically multicoloured (like a tabby cat!) and the greys can grow in subtly without visible regrowth. I'm finding the lighter colour much less harsh against my complexion. Will probably transition towards blonder as my natural hair becomes more fully grey.

I get highlights every 12 weeks and do toner top ups myself in between. That's basically a cost saving measure, they really need doing by about week 10 but I use that L'Oreal coloured hairspray to stretch it out.

I plucked out my grey hairs and they grew back curly! I box dyed for years but now blonde-ish. . Expensive but absolutely worth it.
