Shops/Businesses closing for the Queen's funeral

I work for a major high street retailer and the management team are deciding if the business will close on Monday 19th for the funeral, AIBU to think that the business should close for the whole day?
I have a feeling they are waiting for another big high street name to announce their intentions first.

The bollocks standing on your doorstep to virtue signal your political beliefs and then berate you neighbours for not conforming is back.

www.gov.uk/government/news/national-moment-of-reflection

The National Moment of Reflection will take place at 8pm on Sunday 18 September, the night before the State Funeral, and be marked by a one-minute silence.

The silence can be marked privately at home, with friends and family, out on doorsteps or the street with neighbours, or at locally arranged community events and vigils.

^^

Ewww. Not in this fucking house it won't be.

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2022 16:34

My local 'news' paper says we have to do it at 7pm tonight. Stand on the doorstep and clap. Confused

countrygirl99 · 12/09/2022 16:37

DH is working. He is self employed, has already lost several days work this year due to his dad's illness and death and his mum's care needs. If he had to reschedule Mondays appointments the earliest he could fit them in is November as it's his busy period and he's already working flat out.

ifonly4 · 12/09/2022 16:38

Obviously there are some jobs which are absolutely essential and someone will have to work them. I'd like to think that if businesses feel they need to open (I appreciate it's hard times though), staff will at least get a couple of hours off in the day, even if they can only watch on their phones workplace or in a local park (not ideal I know) or the chance of time to themselves to think about the Queen and her funeral.

GreenClock · 12/09/2022 16:38

I feel very bad for small business owners and people who are seeing hospital appointments rescheduled.

I am a public sector worker so I’m benefitting from a nice day off that I shan’t be paying for. Lucky me. Not everyone is as fortunate.

On a selfish note, I’m hoping that my gym doesn’t close! I’ve no interest in the funeral really.

DH is the same. If he cancels his jobs on Monday he probably can't reschedule them until December.
He has contacted the customers for Monday to check that they're still happy for him to come and they're all fine with it.

I know I have said this on another thread but as a bank holiday, this will cost UK plc £2bn. I hope that whilst you are having another day of rest and shops and business are forced to close even tho the economy is pretty precarious, you don’t mind that or complain if it’s put under any extra pressure. But I guess it doesn’t matter now if businesses go under, it’s job of goverment to pay for everything for everyone. FFS.

RedToothBrush · 12/09/2022 16:57

I don't think the problem is everything being closed.

The problem is everything being closed at short notice leading to cancellations for important events or medical appointments.

countrygirl99 · 12/09/2022 16:59

The funny thing is I work for a bank and I don't know if we will be open or closed! I've had to reorganise some stuff in case we are and I've had about 20 people contact me wanting to know but nothing from th

Why are people moaning and/or surprised about this. The day of the funeral was always going to be bank holiday. Businesses should give their staff the day off if they can, or if they can't, give them a day of TOIL. They can easily pay for it from the profits they make every other day of the year.

You do realise that many businesses are struggling after the last couple of years?

The reality is the business might close for the day but staff may be told to use a days holiday for it. Or work the hours back if they don't have holidays left.

Depends what's in the contract. But bank holidays are not mandatory.

If I want to be off, I would need to use a days holiday as a set number of bank holidays are included in our annual leave. I need the day later in the year therefore I will be working.

ChimChimeny · 12/09/2022 17:10

There is a practical aspect to this as well: many people will travel to London that day. Do we expect them not to have access to places like cafes/food outlets or a pharmacy all day?

Boots will definitely be open in London, they'll be sending loads.of extra stock of water and the like to London stores

whynotwhatknot · 12/09/2022 17:14

I was working in a high street store when Diana's funeral was televised and remember watching it at home so I would like to hope that high street stores would close for the Queen's funeral.

I worked in a department store and I'm pretty sure it was closed for the funeral (although it possibly opened afterwards) it was a Saturday though

ihatesoaps · 12/09/2022 17:20

Figgygal · 12/09/2022 07:41

I dont think anything should be open its wrong to call it a bank holiday it creates the wrong impression as to the purpose of the day.

Some businesses have to stay open though.
I'm having to go to work....I'd love to stay at home watching the funeral but I am not allowed to because I am not being granted the day off

CombatBarbie · 12/09/2022 17:21

Aldi is the first to announce they will be closed.

QuebecBagnet · 12/09/2022 17:35

Am I right in thinking that for Diana’s funeral a lot of shops opened in the afternoon after being closed in the morning? I certainly remember a climbing shop I wanted to go to was closed in the morning as I was hanging around outside it early afternoon waiting for it to open due to the funeral.

Saz12 · 12/09/2022 18:02

Given how crap the economic outlook is, closing seems insane.

Aside from the cost, theres already a huge backlog for medical care in general. This will only add to it.

It’s an historic event: IMO schools should be open and watching the funeral (at least in part) and discussing the monarchy etc is a great learning / teaching opportunity at primary school level at least! Of course if the teacher is a close relative or personal friend of HM, then they should be given time off. But otherwise its not really a personal tragedy when a 96-year-old who you’ve barely met dies: it’s part of life and it’s wierd to treat it as if we should ALL be genuinely grief-stricken. I’m sure some are, but not enough to mean the UK has to grind to a halt.

Employers should try and facilitate people being able to watch the funeral if they want to - eg by taking annual leave or a long lunch break with the hours made up another time.

Hawkins001 · 12/09/2022 18:09

As it's the Queen 👑, shops closed.

Theimpossiblegirl · 12/09/2022 18:18

Waitrose, John Lewis and Primark will close.

holidaynightmare · 12/09/2022 20:01

MinnieMountain · 12/09/2022 07:47

We’ll have clients who have already exchanged contracts to complete house moves on 19th September (conveyancer) , so that’s going to be fun.

That sounds awful bless you

holidaynightmare · 12/09/2022 20:06

I work in a hospital and we've had lots of calls all day from patients wanting to know whether we are going to be operating on people and about the clinics on Monday
We haven't been told and some patients have been waiting ages to be seen and then there's the operations waiting list post Covid sarga so some Perot have waited 2+ years

They're all frustrated but we can't tell them anything we are hoping we can tomorrow

roofingnovice · 12/09/2022 21:26

Still no word from the big bosses. Lots of customers asking if we are closing on the 19th, most are shocked we can't tell them. Lots of staff frustration in not knowing.
It appears, as a company we are happy to use the Queen's image on merchandise to boost the profits but not to honour her in death by announcing a full/partial closure on the day of her funeral.
Speculation about us in the press, especially as Waitrose, John Lewis, Aldi, Lidl, Homebase, WH Smith, B&Q, Primark, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Argos, Ikea etc have announced their intentions, but no announcement for us.
Sorry my post is apparently one of many on this subject, I was working all weekend so hadn't had the opportunity of seeing the others...

It's the only one that I have seen. Don't worry about it. I reckon mumsnet has the server space for one more thread 😉

Zebedee55 · 13/09/2022 07:41

Most of the supermarkets, along with Argos, IKEA, B&Q etc are closing for the day.
