Shops/Businesses closing for the Queen's funeral

I work for a major high street retailer and the management team are deciding if the business will close on Monday 19th for the funeral, AIBU to think that the business should close for the whole day?
I have a feeling they are waiting for another big high street name to announce their intentions first.

I think it will depend a lot on if schools are closing. I or my dh would need to at best work from home, and very intermittently, if our dcs are at home.

Schools are closed.
It has already been said.

As a small business owner, I'm open mouthed that it's been declared a bank holiday. We've already had to pay for one extra this year for the Jubilee.

I'd genuinely ove to know where the money to pay everyone for not working all day is to be gotten from........... can I shake a tree somewhere perhaps?

Sorry, Truss has already promised all available money to Shell and BP, small businesses can go fuck themselves Angry

Figgygal · 12/09/2022 07:41

I dont think anything should be open its wrong to call it a bank holiday it creates the wrong impression as to the purpose of the day.

Florenz · 12/09/2022 07:42

Why are people moaning and/or surprised about this. The day of the funeral was always going to be bank holiday. Businesses should give their staff the day off if they can, or if they can't, give them a day of TOIL. They can easily pay for it from the profits they make every other day of the year.

ImAvingOops · 12/09/2022 07:42

Initially I did think this should be a BH - historic event and all that. But it's going to cause havoc with hospital appointments (that people have often waited months or years for) and employers and re childcare.
Maybe our lives shouldn't be subject to the whims of a monarch who won't be paying for all this.

I agree funeral day was always going to be a BH but this They can easily pay for it from the profits they make every other day of the year is amazingly naive - a lot of smaller businesses are on their knees and BHs cost a significant amount.

Overall there will be winners and losers as the hotel trade for example are expecting a boost in London.

But businesses are struggling and the government seems not to care at all.

MinnieMountain · 12/09/2022 07:47

We’ll have clients who have already exchanged contracts to complete house moves on 19th September (conveyancer) , so that’s going to be fun.

EdithWeston · 12/09/2022 07:47

As it's a Bank Holiday and as the numbers of people who will be going shopping will be quite low, I think retail may as well close. But it's up to them.

What businesses do about accounting for staff leave will depend on how contracts are worded. If it's XX days plus Bank hols, then staff get an extra day off. If its YY days including Bank hols, then the annual leave is the same but you've just lost any choice over when you take that day

Oh jeeps, never thought about that!

Redqueenheart · 12/09/2022 07:53

There is a practical aspect to this as well: many people will travel to London that day. Do we expect them not to have access to places like cafes/food outlets or a pharmacy all day?

I think it is a bit silly really to expect everywhere to close.

Also people have mentioned small businesses have had enough to cope with. They don't need another day of lost trade.

I would not think of any business that chooses to remain open as ''disrespectful'', it is simply a practical decision for many.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 12/09/2022 07:54

The independent shoos in our small high street have agreed to close, most of them close on a monday anyway

in the shop i work in we don’t get paid for bank holidays if we don’t work them so that won’t make any difference either

CMZ2018 · 12/09/2022 08:44

Harrods advised they were closing on the day of the funeral before they knew it was a BH and before the date was known.

Flake123 · 12/09/2022 14:58

So annoyed as I’ve just finished my shift at a major supermarket and yet we are still none the wiser if we are closed or not. My two will be off school/nursery so stressing as I’ll need to take unpaid parental leave if we don’t close!

wellhelloitsme · 12/09/2022 15:45

@Veeragall

I think businesses should close. It's a national day of mourning and the bank holiday is to enable people to watch the funeral not to go shopping etc.

There will be plenty of opportunity to celebrate on the bank holiday for the coronation.

A day's trading can make a huge difference to a small business or sole trader, many of whom are already on their knees due to the cost of living and energy bills (the latter especially for bricks and mortar businesses).

It's all very well people saying one day doesn't make a difference but it really does.

And yes a small shop can stay open that day but if they're based on say a high street, and the larger retailers won't be open then it means footfall will be hugely down to the point of almost zero, meaning their takings will be negligible to non existent.

This last few years has shut down so many small businesses and it's just another hit they're expected to take by people who don't understand the effect on them.

Southeastdweller · 12/09/2022 15:49

It’s all bloody ridiculous. Passed off my gym
may be closing (yet they’ve opened before on Christmas Day). It’s all P.R, they don’t want their brand damaged by opening. This country is a joke.

MsFannySqueers · 12/09/2022 15:58

I also like a PP initially thought that the day of the Queen’s funeral should be a BH. I have been very upset by the Queen’s death. However I now don’t think it should be. A poster on MN has had a long awaited medical appointment cancelled. There is even a poor woman on MN whose mother’s funeral can’t go ahead on the Monday as the crematorium is shutting! I think it should have been left to individuals to arrange time off if they wished to watch the funeral as it happens.

MsFannySqueers · 12/09/2022 16:01

Also just read the PP regarding house moves! So presumably no transfer of bank funds on the Monday what a nightmare!

takemetomybeach · 12/09/2022 16:06

A large supermarket chain having to close on the 19th could actually start the road to ruin. I am a senior manager for a large UK based retail company and we could honestly go under, losing a days sales across our shops.

PeloFondo · 12/09/2022 16:08

I work for a large car dealership and we are closing

StrongTea · 12/09/2022 16:15

Got dental appt next Monday, made today after check up and receptionist said no plans to close.

TokyoSushi · 12/09/2022 16:20

Aldi have said that they are closing now so I expect more will follow.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 12/09/2022 16:27

RampantIvy · 12/09/2022 07:36

I think you are underestimating how many people will watch it though.

I think there will be very few shoppers during the funeral, so maybe shops could open later or close just during the funeral.

You might be surprised. The people who aren't interested or take a negative view of the event aren't really visible at the moment, and if shops were open, some of them would take the opportunity to go when they think it'll be quieter. I'm not saying shops will be open, but if they are then there's a cohort of people who don't want to watch the funeral.

Sparklingbrook · 12/09/2022 16:27

If the supermarkets shut for one whole day on Monday, Sunday will be like Christmas Eve. Hmm

Yes, this is woefully naive.
