To not know what to do with Lego?

Burnamer · 11/09/2022 16:00

Not kids Lego but my Lego. It’s so expensive and just seems like a dust trap once it’s built. Should I build it then sell on eBay? Keep it in a cupboard? Is there a magic trick for dusting it?
What do other people do?

What kind of Lego, might be interested in buying some! 😂

We have a large collection of adult Lego and most of it is in display cases except for the rollercoaster which collects dust.

DomesticBlisters · 11/09/2022 16:04

Hoover with a stocking over is good to save sucking up pieces. Also a paintbrush to dust it off at the same time

calmlakes · 11/09/2022 16:08

I actually quite often wash Lego with a gentle spray.
But we are running out of Lego space!
I'm also not sure what to do with it long term.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 11/09/2022 16:10

You need to move to a larger house so you can have a display room. Once that is full you will need to move again. It is the only way.

Build one of these! (Saw it yesterday in a butcher’s near me - part of a current display trail).

I keep ours in a couple of wheeled drawer towers. One drawer is all the instruction booklets, and all the pieces are sorted by size or function into the rest of drawers. The tops of the units are useful for leaving half-built projects on, or for displaying finished projects.

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 11/09/2022 16:43

You dismantle it all, mix it all up, put it in a box with the instructions & send it to me!

obviously

Floralnomad · 11/09/2022 16:46

For lots of the big sets Lego now sell glass display cases , we have our Winnie the Pooh treehouse in one .

justfiveminutes · 11/09/2022 17:24

My sister's family have a tiny little vacuum cleaner with a bristly attachment. But I think you need glass-fronted shelves or cabinets really.

Simonjt · 11/09/2022 17:28

I vacuum mine with the brush attached and a sock where the brush attaches to the pipe so lego can’t be sucked in. It works quite well.

Boxowine · 11/09/2022 17:37

First you have to decide if you want to keep it or sell it.

I sold some once and was paid 450 dollars, plus they sent pre paid shipping labels. I don't know where you are but just Google selling Legos and you will find plenty of second hand vendors.

I did advertise it as free but never got any requests from any schools or clubs so I pursued selling it and was very, very surprised. You get more if you have boxes and instructions

If you want to keep it you may want to figure out storage. It's ok if you want to display it. I think it's cool.

There are several ways to wash it. I put it in a mesh laundry bag and sprayed it with cleaner and then the garden hose and left it outside to dry. I have heard of people putting it in their dishwasher but I didn't want to chance any little bricks getting loose in the appliance.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/09/2022 17:43

You should immediately give it all to me for safekeeping.

I have ikea billy oxburg

Whatsnewpussyhat · 11/09/2022 17:46

Sorry posted too soon.

IKEA billy oxburg tall bookcase with glass doors. Great because you can adjust the shelves and doors keep the dust off.

Old vintage glass display cabinets are good too.

Sometimes I dismantle and re-box sets and put them away to make room for new sets or sell what I don't want anymore.

Burnamer · 11/09/2022 17:58

Oh wow I didn’t expect so many replies so quickly. Selling it seems sensible but maybe I could indulge my inner child and get a glass display case. The Lego feels like an indulgence so getting a display case for it, even more so.

View it as protecting your investment instead.😄

My teenager sells vintage/old Lego (usually by individual piece on eBay). He's made about £1,000 so far. One cracked helmet sold for £30 which I find slightly inconceivable but there you go.

hop321 · 11/09/2022 19:46

You can also buy missing pieces for sets on sites such as BrickOwl

Hankunamatata · 11/09/2022 19:47

Plastic display boxs

scrivette · 11/09/2022 19:48

Display them on shelves and special ones in the plastic boxes. (Also have The Winnie The Pooh in a box as it's quite delicate).

My Baby Groot is on my desk at the moment as he is so cute I like to see him.

If you have the Lego flowers they look great on the mantelpiece or windowsill in a vase.

MingeofDeath · 11/09/2022 19:49

I know what NOT to do with it and that's stand on it with bare feet.

KeyWorker · 11/09/2022 19:54

My DH builds Lego as a hobby. He rotates what he displays in the living room. When he takes a model down he bags it back up into the correct bags ready to build again. Can you not do the same? As for dusting, I found a cheap soft bristled make up brush (unused!) good for keeping models dust free.

etulosba · 11/09/2022 19:55

Can’t you just take it apart and make something new out of it?

Burnamer · 11/09/2022 21:21

@Whatsnewpussyhat I like the way you think (and your user name!)

@KeyWorker that’s a fantastic idea - thank you

@etulosba unfortunately I don’t have the creativity so have to follow instructions.

Thank you all - I’ll try the dusting methods suggested and a glass-fronted display case will be purchased.
Oh and I’ll be visiting the Lego shop one lunchtime this week.
🥰

i have mine in a glass cabinet arranged by theme. But i need at least 2 more cabinets.
I have a lot of minifigs (so so many) and those are put in little display cases.
My Gingerbread house goes in a box and comes out each year on 1st December.

As for cleaning? lots of little brushes (some dry, some are dipped in water a bit)

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 11/09/2022 21:25

If you’re not sure what to do with a Ghostbusters Firehouse, I will nobly volunteer to take it off your hands. It’d be a public service.
