To ask why the Met are at Balmoral?

Londonlas · 11/09/2022 09:59

Have watched some of the coverage and can’t help but notice that the police around Balmoral seem to be Metropolitan officers?

Is that right? Why aren’t the local Scottish officers there? Is that because of the death of the queen? How did they get them up there so quickly?

I’ve clearly thought about this too much.

Thanks knowledgable mumsnetters.

Tour of Britain got cancelled with death of HRM because the police escorts were recalled elsewhere. All these big events need police presence.

Resist, resist, res…

if I could walk 500 miles… 😊

You could at least get the words right!

It's "and I would walk 500 miles, and I would walk 500 more....."

BorgQueen · 11/09/2022 10:34

I’m getting extremely annoyed at the police along the route standing with their backs to the cortege and not removing their hats as the hearse passes by. I know it’s for crowd control/security reasons but it seems very disrespectful.
Don’t get me started on the ghouls with their mobiles out filming it all.

Unfortunately it's a sign of the times - if you go to any event nowadays, all you can see is people holding up their mobile phones. I wonder how many people even watch what they've filmed.

BorgQueen · 11/09/2022 10:48

I do wonder if they want to be filming in case something awful happens and they can sell the footage for a fortune, I can’t think of any other reason, they aren’t going to sit and rewatch their shaky footage, that’s for sure.

giggly · 11/09/2022 10:53

@BorgQueen the Police are there for crowd control/security not for watching the cortège and how exactly are they supposed to take their hats off without taking their eyes off the ball?

Bunnycat101 · 11/09/2022 10:58

of course there is high security. How can the PP be surprised by the police outriders. The logistics of the next week must be absolutely immense.

pompomdaisy · 11/09/2022 10:59

Yeah the Queen has died! Of course it's not business as usual!

HotSocks · 11/09/2022 11:01

'How can the PP be surprised by the police outriders.'

I didn't say I was surprised by the police outriders I said I was surprised by the amount of cars and police vans. Watch the footage of them going through Ballater!

elizaregina · 11/09/2022 11:07

Hot I agree?

Is there lots of trouble expected do you think?

An ambulance seemed to be in the convoy as well.

OrchardBlack · 11/09/2022 11:10

I'm a cop in Northampton and been called to abstract for the funeral, as have TVP and I'm sure many others. The Met are reposinsible for royal protection.

HotSocks · 11/09/2022 11:13

'Is there lots of trouble expected do you think?'

I know it looked like they were policing a major football event not a cortege passing through a village. Maybe they were thinking republicans would've gone on the rampage.

Mrsjayy · 11/09/2022 11:24

They are just doing crowd control somebody could try to jump in front of the hearse or throw flowers to actually want to harm, they are not being disrespectful but doing their job and keeping everyone safe.

Hakunamatata91 · 11/09/2022 11:28

Local police are also there, police from all other Scotland have been released from other duties as far as possible to manage the next few days.

Hakunamatata91 · 11/09/2022 11:29

*all over

ElizaB22 · 11/09/2022 11:29

I imagine Police Scotland will have many of their officers in Edinburgh where many people will gather.

The funeral itself will be a huge security operation www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/queen-funeral-police-security-terror-biden-b2163925.html

BashfulClam · 11/09/2022 11:38

All police forces will be ready. There was a heavy Police Scotland presence in Edinburgh yesterday including the mounted police. During COP26 Edinburgh was full of police from all over the UK. It was quite interesting to spot where they were from.

sparks99 · 11/09/2022 11:39

There are officers deployed from all over the UK as part of Mutual Aid. They basically help each other out when something big needs police presence.

TVP have Windsor on their patch as well, it's all hands on deck.

I’m notorious for getting words wrong!!!

Londonlas · 11/09/2022 12:50

@Tort oh sorry; didn’t realise that Met officers were taught teleportation when they joined up and could travel over 500 miles in the very short time between the announcement of the Queen’s ill health and the footage coming from Balmoral
showing Met officers.

Maybe they’re taught it in basic training.

Thanks for the actually sensible answers.
have been DMd by a mumsnet user whose DH is actually at Balmoral now and has been the whole summer. He’s a Met officer and they do ‘tours’ of 10 weeks at Balmoral over the summer, when the royals visit. Very interesting.

Although it has made me wonder, as a previous poster mentioned, why the Scottish Police don’t have their own specialist units there. Maybe they don’t want to: must be expensive!

Also anniversary of September 11th…

ShaunaTheSheep · 11/09/2022 13:00

As others have said, Met are royal protection, including the royal residences outside London. Met take precedence over the local force, such as TVP in Windsor.
