I understand that the main stream news will be mainly about the Queen's death but surely they could at wmast have some time reporting on other items.

Something major happening in Ukraine, the energy crisis, Olivia the girl who was shot it Liverpool as gone fromthe headlines. There was a missing child todayand Scotland also no coverage of Chris Kaba death.

It's crazy.

@Cornettoninja I think it is simple actually, he was sitting in a car, unarmed, and killed.

Raoal Moat shot his ex girlfriend and her new boyfriend, the man died. He then shot a police officer in the face blinding him for life. When the police found Moat they didn’t fire a single shot despite him being armed with the same fire arm he shot all 3 people with.

A massive massive error of judgment by the police to say the least and we should not have to scroll down on news pages to be aware of this. I understand the Queens coverage, but should Meghan Markle, as an example, be higher up on news pages than Chris Kaba, IMO absolutely not.

roarfeckingroarr · 11/09/2022 11:47

We had nothing but the energy issues for weeks on end.

Maireas · 11/09/2022 11:47

There's plenty of other news coverage.
Where are you looking?
I've been reading it on the following apps: BBC news, Sky news, the Guardian and the Independent.

The visual channels do not have much else on for hours and hours.

That's slightly different to news reports - just go on the various news apps.

I do understand that but with the TV steams they could do it every few hours.

I also know lots of older people worried about the cost of living they don't use the apps.

@Violashift it makes sense that it’s a big news story of course, it’s significant and the end of an era, but I agree it seems to spill over into something else occasionally. I would describe it as maybe propaganda, as I think most people do think it’s a big deal and want there to be good coverage, but the blanket coverage dominating what seems like all UK media, in conjunction with what feels like a tight reign on comment sections etc. tips it over into the realm of something quite forced feeling imo.
I think there was a thread on here about someone working in local authority being mandated to wear all black for the next 10 days, or suffer disciplinary action. Not sure if this is true, or if true it is widespread across LA or civil service, but if it is it speaks to a very top down pro-royalist agenda which is not wholly appropriate even for a constitutional monarchy.
There are many other important, pressing issues right now, they are being covered but it seems nothing will take over the “top spot” bar maybe another royal death.

So do you think the police took the correct action twelve years ago?

Chris Kaba wasn’t ‘just’ sitting in a car, he’d been involved in a chase and had been boxed in after failing to voluntarily come to a stop with a strong history of firearms associations (if they’d identified him at this point) including the vehicle he was in.

There are conflicting eyewitness reports about him attempting to ram the police… but that leads to the point that the details aren’t absolutely clear yet but it’s misleading to paint him as wholly innocently caught up in police profiling when he actively led a life involved in participating in and glamourising (as a member of the 69) criminality and firearms.

I haven't watched the news for several days - as it's been dominated by the Queen - I guess the 'other' news comes at the end.

Even the Guardian has half its website talking about it. And if you look at the DM website, it's full of the Queen. Of course, it's also Meghan and Harry as well now.

News is there. But you have to scroll down.

It was after the first 15 minutes, yes, but I don’t think you can complain about not seeing things on the news if you haven’t watched the news.

PeekabooAtTheZoo · 11/09/2022 12:07

YABU it's not "everywhere" in the "mainstream news" are you stuck on the Royal Family tab of a major news website? So far today on the front page of the Guardian I saw more about Ukraine than about The Queen, I just had to scroll from the top banner to see it and it was right there on the main page.
You seem concerned that "lots will be missed" but that implies that seeing the news isn't usually a reductionist exercise (it is) and gives you some sort of power to change the events or something???

I'm not complaining - I am perfectly capable of finding out things that are happening in the news.

15 minutes you say.....I wonder at what point it won't be the main headline. It took several weeks before Diana was no longer the main headline

Bubblebubblebah · 11/09/2022 12:26

Ukraine push is no1 top read news on bbc so luckily enough people can scroll that one screen worth down

Ahf22 · 11/09/2022 12:33

Do you pay the BBC licence fee? Don’t complain if so.

Violashift · 11/09/2022 13:01

NCHammer2022 · 11/09/2022 11:02

I saw coverage of all the things you’ve listed on the 10pm news last night. So the main BBC news programme, not exactly tucked away somewhere.

My point is all day Sky news and BBC. Not the news at 10. Other stories woodlands have been all over these.
