Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

How do you think HER children feel right now? Ever lost a parent?

Yes I have. I lost both parents pretty young in a car accident. I wish either had lived anywhere approaching 96 years old. And life continued on while my world was devastated.

SeeYouNextTLol · 11/09/2022 18:45

In other jobs will they take the bank holiday out of their normal holiday hours? 🤦‍♂️

FarmerRefuted · 11/09/2022 18:45

Schools won't have to pay the day back by losing a day elsewhere, the DfE will simply do what they did to accommodate the Jubilee Bank Holiday last term and temporarily amend the regulations to reduce the school year for 2022/2023 to a minimum of 189 days instead of 190. Similar was dine for other additional bank holidays in previous years, such as William and Catherine's wedding.

Beverley71 · 11/09/2022 18:46

I work in a school. I would like to watch the funeral and I would like my school attending children to watch the funeral

Schools will be closed as its a Bank Holiday but they will lose a day off one of the other holidays. Probably the summer break

No they won't its an extra day for everyone so the school year will be 194 days like last year with the jubilee Bank Holiday

Nope. Just like they won’t in schools,

Ffs.

antelopevalley · 11/09/2022 18:48

And for many parents it will cause issues with childcare.

ThisIsNotThePostYourLookingFor · 11/09/2022 18:54

I’d rather the schools were closed for this than the bloody elections! My DC’s school is always closed and it’s bloody infuriating when there are so many close public building they could use as polling stations instead.

I’m not a royalist but we’ll be watching it and letting my DC’s see some history

iloveyankeecandle · 11/09/2022 19:01

Well school is not childcare..

Missyc11 · 11/09/2022 19:03

Honestly and respectfully, get a grip.
The queen deserves this and everyone deserves a chance to watch it.

it’s ONE DAY. Jeez

It is.

antelopevalley · 11/09/2022 19:10

@Missyc11 Lots of people can not watch it anyway. They will be working.

pleasehelpwi3 · 11/09/2022 19:24

As a committed republican, I watch those who prefer to be subjects and not citizens with a mix of disbelief (I've never heard so much drivel spouted on the BBC in all my life) and worry that they can believe all the stuff being printed. I'm sure most of the Royal Family couldn't care less about us plebs, just so long as we're happy to keep bunging them the hundreds of millions of quid a year to keep up their tax payer funded homes, holidays, servants, duchies, arcane titles and then some. And there's always some sucker who thinks they work hard. Pull the other one. My partner worked hard front-line on the Covid wards seeing patients- often without proper PPE- at the start. Now that's hard work.
As for the bank holiday, yeah great, it's a day off from teaching but I will certainly be explaining to my class that there are different views on the royals.

LilacPoppy · 11/09/2022 19:25

@CapMarvel no school isn't childcare it's education. Parents may take advantage and use it for childcare but they are ultimately responsible for caring for their own children.

Morgysmum · 11/09/2022 19:30

I am with you. We are both key workers. So we don't get bank Holidays off. So we will be working.
Meanwhile, our teen will be sat at home, spending hours on the computer, until a parent returns.
He will not watch the funeral and learn nothing all day, if he was at school, they could put the funeral on the telly, in each classroom. Then aftwards, carry on with his school work and exam prep.

Two working parents is only possible because of schools. If schools did not exist loads of parents would have to leave the workforce.

Is it actually your role to tell the pupils that there are different views on the Royals? And how would you present these ‘views’? Surely that comes under the heading of deciding for themselves as they get older whether they like them or not. I can’t see how you would present stuff without projecting your own negative slant on the Royal Family.

DWMoosmum · 11/09/2022 19:40

I don't think you're being unreasonable asking for schools not be closed, but our children have just celebrated the Queens Jubilee, so they should be able to celebrate her life and have the option to watch the funeral procession as millions of other people will.

Violashift · 11/09/2022 19:40

wellstopdoingitthen · 11/09/2022 18:28

You wouldn't believe how many parents kept their children off school on Friday because they were too upset about the queen's death.

Our school was only half full in the heat wave.

EngTech · 11/09/2022 19:41

Think of it as a history lesson that the children will be witnessing

Felicejayne · 11/09/2022 19:46

We know the dates of other Bank holidays more than 10 days in advance. Those of us who don't automatically get bank holidays off work may have serious difficulty finding any childcare at short notice.
Let's hope the health care professionals, emergency services workers, law enforcers and food infrastructure workers who take care of us will be able find childcare while everyone else watches the TV.

fetchacloth · 11/09/2022 19:47

YABU
The bank holiday has already been announced and I'm sure many people will want to view the state funeral proceedings.
There is likely to be another bank holiday for Charles's coronation too.
The world doesn't revolve around what individuals might want so bad luck.

iloveyankeecandle · 11/09/2022 19:01

Well school is not childcare..

You'll want to tell the DWP that.

Single parents are expected to be available to work 25 hours a week once their youngest child reaches school age.

Why not just watch the funeral online or on a television in the classroom then? Parents and kids have had quite enough disruption in the past 2.5 years.

i know my teenagers, if at home will watch about ten minutes of it, then disappear into Fortnite or whatever.
