Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

I honestly don’t understand why people get so stressed about it, it’s 1 day off for a monumental event in the UK. Just enjoy the day

DanceItOut · 11/09/2022 18:07

one of my besties is a nurse and has been told she cannot have the day off but her children’s school will be closed so I can see how despite the significance of the day it isn’t easy for some. I can’t even offer to take them for her as different city entirely and I don’t know yet whether I will be one of the members of staff that is required to work.

It's one day , maybe the schools can swap around an inset day to make up for it.
I think some people would have pulled their children out anyway to be honest ( not everyone, but many would )

You do realise teachers work on inset days? That would force teachers and any trainers they have to work a bank holiday.

It’s one day. Your child would likely have longer off if they were sick.

Ifrozethehoumous · 11/09/2022 18:10

Whether you liked the Queen or not, it’s history in the making and her funeral is a good historical event for adults and kids to witness as will be the Coronation. It’s educational after all; there are other subjects out there other than the 3 Rs and the Kardashian’s for heaven’s sake.

I know Inset days are not holidays , but once our school had a ' well being ' day off years ago
They called it an inset day ..

Perhaps the teachers were in school doing well-being training as their topic for the inset day?

Jellicoe · 11/09/2022 18:12

She might not want that but she deserves a proper send off so yes your are miserably unreasonable

Alison1978 · 11/09/2022 18:14

And my children will go where? Bath my husband and I will most definitely be at work. I have to hope one of their friends will have them for a play date

SeeYouNextTLol · 11/09/2022 18:15

schools open on a bank holiday? 🤣🤣🤣

Silvers11 · 11/09/2022 18:15

You want to watch it in peace, it seems, without your child distracting you.

But you want other adults, who may also want to watch it in peace, to watch it whilst trying to keep 30+ (or hundreds if done in the hall) children supervised and educate aged at the same time?

Do you not see the hypocrisy in that?

This. Just This. Couldn't agree more. Such selfish thinking....

Walkden · 11/09/2022 18:16

"Bath my husband"

Tell you husband to get out of the bath and look after his kids 😉

schools open on a bank holiday? 🤣🤣🤣

My daughters school was in on 29 August. Pretty sure they were in on the May holiday too.

I don’t disagree that it should be a bank holiday. I think it should. But it does create a childcare headache for me. Lots of people don’t get bank holidays. I work in a fairly average office job in financial services and don’t get bank holidays. Most of the people I know don’t either.

antelopevalley · 11/09/2022 18:23

Children should never miss a day off school unless incredibly ill or you will get fined.
But the government can suddenly decide to close the schools for whatever reason.

wellstopdoingitthen · 11/09/2022 18:28

You wouldn't believe how many parents kept their children off school on Friday because they were too upset about the queen's death.

IWishIHadNotDoneIt · 11/09/2022 18:28

Schools will be closed as its a Bank Holiday but they will lose a day off one of the other holidays. Probably the summer break

SeeYouNextTLol · 11/09/2022 18:30

What you want doesn't really figure I'm afraid.

Agreed. It’s one day. It’s Lilibet. You should press on.

How do you think HER children feel right now? Ever lost a parent?

SeeYouNextTLol · 11/09/2022 18:36

I don’t understand what is up for debate? It is a Bank Holiday. Schools will be closed. It will be a chance to bond with your little ones or if you are working do what I do when I work and school is shut and travel miles to a friend or relative to dump them there etc Looking forward to having my little ones on Monday. Hopefully there are not parents who don’t work moaning about school closures otherwise that would taking the…. 🤣

Where is this information?

Ears83 · 11/09/2022 18:39

It’s not about what you want though, is it? Schools are closed on the 19th. It is what it is

How are they going to pull that off? With the 'army of supply teachers' the government has?

Loads of families will have their holidays booked by now.

lavenderlou · 11/09/2022 18:43

Schools in England are always closed on Bank Holidays. If there is an additional.bank holiday as there was last year for the Jubilee or for William and Kate's wedding, schools close for those too (or have an additional day off elsewhere in the calendar if the Bank Holiday falls during the school holidays as was the case with the Jubilee holiday). There will be no need to make up any time.

It's been 70 years since a monarch last died so luckily these occasions don't inconvenience people too often.
