Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

I find it fairly ironic that in many schools and the focus on attendance parents have a hard time getting permission to remove their children for a family funeral but the Queen the whole thing is closed.

They really don't get a hard time for a funeral. Must be at an awful school.

"The queen has no impact on my life whatsoever."

"If there is a bank holiday that means taking a day's leave (without pay) or trying to find childcare. It's a hassle I could do without."

Only one of these must be true then!

Sigh.

Fine. No positive impact on my life. Better?

You are using the flawed logic that your situation reflects how a nation feels.

I'm expressing my opinion, although that said I think the bbc et al are vastly overestimating how many people give much of a shit.

Walkden · 10/09/2022 18:06

"Fine. No positive impact on my life. Better"

You sound like the glass half empty type. I won't be paid on the 19th either but you know what I guess I'll make the most of my day off. YOLO

Better?

denpark · 10/09/2022 18:07

I get incredibly pissed off with people using things like this to teacher bash.

The King has declared a Bank Holiday
Schools are therefore shut.

Schools are not your glorified childcare.

Teachers have no choice in this decision.

People need to wind their necks in and deal with it without bashing others.

I don't care about the queen or the royal family, never have, never will.

What I do care about is being able to pay my bills and having childcare etc in place. I felt the same last week when the schools were looking like they were going to shut due to industrial action.

That's just being realistic, nothing to with how full my glass is, thanks.

Sorry to say it, but schools are childcare. Yes, they are there to learn but it also allows me to work.

That's just a simple fact.

I don’t think people are using this to teacher bash. Complaining about the fact it’s leaving lots of us in a pickle with childcare/losing a days pay etc is not teacher bashing. Teachers had no control over this. It’s a complaint about the situation rather than teacher bashing.

Yes, of course schools function as childcare. Pretending they don't is completely out of touch. Obviously teachers have no more power in this situation than anyone else.

It is incredible how many teachers say they feel compelled to spend the day watching The Queen's funeral live with their family.

I hope it is everything that you hope it will be.

Why is it incredible? This is a thread about schools hence teachers commenting. There's millions of people who will watch the funeral across the country.

denpark · 10/09/2022 18:31

Schools are only your 'childcare' during school hours. Not weekends or Bank Holidays.

Deal with it.

Abraxan · 10/09/2022 18:32

To be fair I probably will watch aspects of it, probably whilst doing some catch up work in my laptop on my knee.
Probably have a glass of wine or two during the day and something nice to eat. Taking dd back to university in the Sunday - so the extra BH afternoon will no doubt be taken up doing what I normally do on a Sunday afternoon (rather than cramming it onto the evening when we get home.)

Walkden · 10/09/2022 18:36

"I don't care about the queen or the royal family, never have, never will"

Me neither but I recognise that many people feel differently and accept that very rarely deaths and changes in the monarchy will result in loss of work. Whingeing on Mumsnet isn't going to change that. I just cut my cloth accordingly. That's just being realistic

I'm a teacher. I won't be watching it.
TBH I would rather be in school teaching as my yr11 classes are that day.

However I understand that many people will want to watch the funeral and I also know that many people will be happy just for a day off.

Funny how very few people gave a shiny shit about these children before covid,
Yet now use it as a stick to beat teachers with.

Loics · 10/09/2022 18:42

YANBU, the day off isn't a bad thing (although I'm part time so wouldn't be working regardless), but it's tricky for parents who don't get the day off and will somehow have to arrange childcare.
I haven't given the Queen's death a second thought after hearing the news (apart from seeing photos and tributes everywhere), I don't think those who don't want to mourn should be negatively impacted by it.

And what about those who do want to mourn....

@FrippEnos

Everything is a stick to beat teachers with...seemingly now the Queen dying is yet another reason people choose to have a go at us :(

For some MNers (not all) we can't do right for doing wrong despite the fact that we had no control over the timing, or in fact the decision to approve a bank holiday!!!

Loics · 10/09/2022 18:48

Supergirl1958 · 10/09/2022 18:44

They can. It is the case that it is all centred around those who do, which isn't an issue, I don't have a problem with people being upset about the Queen's death and wanting to mark it/celebrate her life. Not at all. I just don't like that a lot of it is imposed on everyone regardless.

Supergirl1958 · 10/09/2022 18:51

@Loics but our King has decreed a bank holiday so what can we do?

noblegiraffe · 10/09/2022 18:53

Yes, of course schools function as childcare. Pretending they don't is completely out of touch.

Pretty sure that the parents of the teens I would be teaching that day won’t be scrabbling around for childcare.

FrippEnos · 10/09/2022 18:56

Yup, try it at the end of the day when we are required to call social services because parents haven't collected their children.

Supergirl1958 · 10/09/2022 18:51

Nothing really, those who will be negatively impacted will have the worry of sorting alternatives.

PurpleDaisies · 10/09/2022 18:57

I’m a republican. It’s an event of national importance and I agree with schools being closed.
