Schools closed for the Queen’s funeral

First off, Queen Elizabeth II was an amazing ruler and an inspiration, we are a forces family and my husband has served her for 30 plus years.

but - I do not want the schools to be closed for her funeral (or for any reason at all), I want us to do what I believe she would have done, press on.

Complaining about the notice Hmm Grin.

How much notice does one normally get for a funeral?!

Well my partner's Mother's funeral had to wait just over a month earlier this year.....there is a waiting list that still hasn't cleared from Covid

Sporty2022 · 10/09/2022 15:33

I agree that the day after her death, they could have confirmed her funeral date. These things are planned meticulously before hand.

Porcupineintherough · 10/09/2022 15:33

@1dayatatime so at the point in April 2020 when people were being turned away from hospitals because they were full you'd have just, what, carried on going? Have them die untended at home or on the street? Kudos to you for admitting it, most people gloss over the implications. Bloody glad you weren't in charge though.

FrippEnos · 10/09/2022 15:39

For those that are really bothered about schools being closed on a bank holiday,
Why don't you call up usforthem or the DfE to call up all those on their volunteer lists?

Supergirl1958 · 10/09/2022 15:40

noblegiraffe · 10/09/2022 14:52

and the fact it's during term time (hence shouts of lost learning.)

But the Jubilee bank holiday also was during what would otherwise have been term time therefore 'lost learning'.

What you seem to be saying is that people complain about lost learning when they actually mean 'inconvenience to me'.

Yes, but i can't say that given the job i do...i mean why complain about actually having to look after your own children

PoolProblem · 10/09/2022 15:45

I get you. DP and I will not be subject to the BH so childcare issues. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ds has no understanding of the Queen etc so it will be like any other school holiday for us. Our T

@Spikeyball ok...so should her teachers not be able to watch it then? Most of the children I teach won't have any idea (I doubt I would have at their age.) I was 10 when Diana died, and around 14 ish when the Queem mother and Princess Margaret passed away. Even then I didn't really have full understanding of the significance of such things...even last week I learned more and more about Princess Diana's passing, some 25 years later.

I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to watch the historic event.

teenagetantrums · 10/09/2022 15:51

Well l work in a care home so obviously have to work. We normally get extra pay and an extra days holiday if we work bank holiday. However apparently this isn't going to be a 'normal bank' holiday so just a normal day for us. Annoys me they can't even give us an extra days holiday.

They can't plan when she would die, so can't plan the date of the funeral in advance.
There will likely be multiple heads of states flying in for the funeral.
There will be some key people they need to coordinate with before the date can be finalised.

Itstarts · 10/09/2022 16:07

The Queen was patron of my DCs school. I would find it highly disrespectful if they didn't close.

Lipsandlashes · 10/09/2022 16:08

YABU. It’s an historical moment for the majority of us. Use it as an opportunity to teach your children about the history of the monarchy.

NoodleSnow · 10/09/2022 16:11

I agree that everyone who wishes to watch the funeral should be able to, but I’m not sure why that means time off work to watch the live coverage. Times have changed. This is not the 1952 coronation with everyone huddled around the only television in the street to catch a glimpse.

Disneyblueeyes · 10/09/2022 16:11

Just because some people will have to work BH because of being carers, NHS etc doesn't mean everyone else should be forced to work or it 'isn't fair'.
That's just life isn't it.
Most people should be allowed to stay home and watch the funeral. It's the respectful thing to do. Schools being closed is a mark of respect - it teaches children that her death is a big deal. Whether the kids watch it or not doesn't matter.

Guessing you work in a sector where Bank Holidays don’t exist.

So if they do want to watch, how do you suppose they do that without a day off?

Pretty sure BBC will have it available on iPlayer, just like they do with almost all their programming.

Shinyandnew1 · 10/09/2022 16:21

But fortunately due to the Bank Holiday, anyone not working WILL be able to watch it live, just like they did with previous royal weddings and will be able to with the coronation next year.

Lipsandlashes · 10/09/2022 16:13

I do get paid bank holidays. I just also have the ability to empathise with those that will struggle without a day’s pay or with finding a day of childcare.

Spikeyball · 10/09/2022 16:25

"@Spikeyball ok...so should her teachers not be able to watch it then?"

Because the school has residential pupils many will still have to work.

Ds is profoundly autistic so it will never have any relevance for him.

Why wouldn’t someone get paid?

Good job its not about You then OP!

gs26 · 10/09/2022 12:35

@darmaka does that include elective c sections?

@gs26

No idea about hospital planning but logically it would make sense for this to go ahead as if not surely an elective c section becomes an emergency one!

NoodleSnow · 10/09/2022 16:33

Lipsandlashes · 10/09/2022 16:25

Why wouldn’t someone get paid?

Self employed people don’t generally get paid if they don’t work. People on zero hours contracts don’t get paid if they don’t work.
Some people whose employers don’t close, won’t be able to work due to child care and may have to take unpaid leave.

Itstarts · 10/09/2022 16:39

NoodleSnow · 10/09/2022 16:19

Pretty sure BBC will have it available on iPlayer, just like they do with almost all their programming.

That's not the same though is it. Its not an episode of Corrie that you can catch up when you're free of an evening. It's a major historic event.

OhTheLeetleHandsAndFeetle · 10/09/2022 16:42

I’m delighted. I want to watch the funeral, and not whilst having to manage crowd control in the hall for large numbers of adolescents who aren’t interested and just want to bellow at each other and make snarky comments, should the ‘big screen’ idea of previous posters be taken up.
