To wonder why Irish people love Garth Brooks so much?

He’s currently playing in Dublin (a series of gigs over this weekend and next). Apparently 1 in 14 people on the island of Ireland will attend 1 of his concerts… 1 in 3 in Monaghan and 1 in 5 in Tyrone.

I’ve been living in Ireland for 20 years but haven’t met a fan (that I’m aware of). I find it fascinating that people here are so into him!

Being at a Garth Brooks concert is a spiritual experience.😳😇😳

I'm not a culchie, I swear.

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 09/09/2022 22:42

Northern Ireland is crazy for all things country music 🙈 I remember going line dancing with my mum when I was 8 in the 90s and it was so big back then!!

PepsiMaxandPringleStacks · 09/09/2022 22:43

Ps I'm not a cultchie either this was in a big city 🙈

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2022 22:45

I don't like the implication that being a culchie is a bad thing. Humph!

Choopi · 09/09/2022 22:46

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2022 22:14

As a weird culchie I object to anyone thinking that I could ever love Garth Brooks Angry

Haha same. My friends Mam used to love US country music, if she were still alive I'd say she would be going in her cow boy hat. Other than that the only other people I know that like country music are the travellers down the road from me(judging from the shite they blare out of their car radio anyway). I don't know anyone thats actually going or anyone that likes him which is bizarre given the amount of people that supposedly are. Tbh I had assumed that it was just mega Garth Brooks fans that had booked tickets for every night that made it sell out.

steff13 · 09/09/2022 22:46

I'm not a fan, but he's known for putting on a really great show. 🤷‍♀️

Killergigglebunnies · 09/09/2022 22:47

I live in a town in the Uk that has a high population of Irish. Lots of my friends are Irish and on fb, lots of them love Garth Brooks.

Pollywoddles · 09/09/2022 22:47

Irish culchie here now living in Dublin.

They used to make us line dance in gym class.

It was grim.

I remember having to do it briefly in Primary school in the 90s back in the Cotten eye Joe era. Even as a 9/10 year old I remember thinking wtf is this?

maeveiscurious · 09/09/2022 22:50

I saw him at the Point in Dublin back in the 90s he was amazing

SparklyAntlers · 09/09/2022 22:51

I'm Irish and don't know a single person going, or anyone that has ever expressed an interest in his music. I'm baffled! I have heard he's great live and won't judge someone else's taste in music, but I just don't understand where these people have been hiding. I could walk down a random street in Paris and bump into someone who went to school with my cousin, yet I can't find a single Garth Brooks fan on an island that apparently adores him! 😆

JaneJeffer · 09/09/2022 22:52

Remember this?

My otherwise normal and sensible MIL is currently in Croke Park, probably wearing one of those pink cowboy hats with silver sequins round the edges.

Pollywoddles · 09/09/2022 22:54

@Choopi

You were lucky it was only primary school! We were 16 and I loved Nirvana and RATM. I still shudder at the thought.

There were some that loved it though, I’ll bet they’re in Croker this weekend.

I think it's all my cousins Grin

That RTE link has a clip of Colin Farrell line dancing on it. He had such a sweet face. I feel so old now.

HollaHolla · 09/09/2022 23:05

My abiding memory of the first time I visited Dublin (in about 1994!), was that there were massive billboards, advertising the imminent Garth Brooks gigs. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I’m going next Saturday! CANNOT WAIT

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 09/09/2022 23:09

I just laughed and showed this to DH. I'm English living in NI and had never heard of him before moving here. People at work are always buying and selling his tickets. Have still never heard a song of his, will make sure I do at some point as maybe I'm missing out!

inisfree · 09/09/2022 23:11

I'm neither weird nor a culchie and I'm going on Sunday night. Cannot wait!!!!!

maeveiscurious · 09/09/2022 23:12

I wish I was going

peasandtoastfortea · 09/09/2022 23:14

😂 I am irish. I have often wondered this as well. My cousins love him. They go as a groupie to his concerts in Dublin. He's not like he was years ago.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 09/09/2022 23:14

His music was part of my life growing up, along with Tracey Chapman, Johnny cash, traditional Irish music etc.

Irish people IME like traditional and country music it is part of the culture or was when I was a child.

Some of my best childhood memories are sitting among adults enjoying a sing song while they played instruments, usually at a wake or a wedding.

I'm not going to see Garth though did have tickets for the last concert he pulled out of.

I had not listened to his music in years but with all the hype I'm blasting Garth on my ear pods while power walking all week.

guesttest2 · 09/09/2022 23:16

We're in N.I & my husband and son are going to see him on Sunday night in Dublin. I can't see the attraction!!

pawkins · 09/09/2022 23:19

Irish people love live music and going to concerts. The majority of all artists who play in Dublin are sold out. Tickets aren’t cheap either.
