To wonder why you’d put a curtain outside your front door?! [pic]

I walked past this front door the other day - are outdoor curtains now a thing? Why would someone have one? I’m oddly intrigued by it!

Are they losing the plot? LOL

Loginmystery · 09/09/2022 21:20

All I can think is it would give some privacy if the door was to be left open. Heatwave situation for example. But maybe I'm wrong.

TokidokiBarbie · 09/09/2022 21:20

It's like an indoor curtain but outside.

moredogsthansense · 09/09/2022 21:21

To stop the paint being damaged by sunlight/allow the door to be open for a breeze to blow through while keeping the sun out.

JenniferBarkley · 09/09/2022 21:21

There's a house near us with this setup! I've never understood it.

flowerstar19 · 09/09/2022 21:21

Fascinating!

megosaurusrex · 09/09/2022 21:21

That is bizarre... is it some kind of waterproof curtain? Like some sort of weird makeshift porch?

Iseeall · 09/09/2022 21:21

I always thought it was to stop your paintwork fading.

Nitw1t · 09/09/2022 21:21

I reckon someone did it in lockdown so they could change out of their work clothes before they went in the house.

Slushycuppa · 09/09/2022 21:21

Privacy? Although I don't think there are any windows on the door are there?

We have one INSIDE to stop draughts.

I'm also intrigued. Was is fabric or shower curtain?

TheSpottedZebra · 09/09/2022 21:22

Its a shower curtain isn't t it? They're screening off their porch area and trying to keep it cool and dry I guess.

5zeds · 09/09/2022 21:22

So they can open the door to air the house without you seeing inside?

Aubriella · 09/09/2022 21:22

Very common in hot countries. It was probably a temporary measure for the heatwave, and will come down in colder weather.

user1583920194858592910103848559201 · 09/09/2022 21:23

Shower curtain to stop the rain making the steps slippy/flooding at front door.

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 09/09/2022 21:23

If it’s a shower curtain - maybe they are using to protect washing drying on an airer?

MarshaMelrose · 09/09/2022 21:23

It doesn't look like it's been through a British winter yet! I wonder if it will still be hanging when they've had to peel it off the front door a few times.

Salamander44 · 09/09/2022 21:24

It looked like fabric rather than a shower curtain - it had sort of chintzy gold bits in! It only appeared recently so definitely not a lockdown thing

Then it was a screen for the heat. Door open but curtain closed so they got air but not the light and heat.

Ah, that makes sense - I’ve lived in the UK all my life so have never seen this before!

notprincehamlet · 09/09/2022 21:26

Maybe Mr Benn lives there?

purplethings · 09/09/2022 21:27

Because the door opens inwards you can have the door open whilst totally sealing the opening to keep out flies and mosquitos.

Salamander44 · 09/09/2022 21:27

@notprincehamlet I hope so 😁

There's a house with one near us, it's been up for two years so not just for summer.

ReeseWitherfork · 09/09/2022 21:29

Wait…. If it’s for hot weather why have they only just put it up?!

WibbleBibble · 09/09/2022 21:30

Surely if it was for flies it would be sitting tighter to the doorframe rather than sitting on the inside of the outter wall of the porch?

It does seem to make sense that it's to let the breeze in but block out the sun, but I wouldnt feel comfortable with my front door open even though we live in a 'safe' small town
