I walked past this front door the other day - are outdoor curtains now a thing? Why would someone have one? I’m oddly intrigued by it!

Quite common to have a fly curtain back in the 60/70's when could leave your front door open! You get a nice breeze

Heatwaves were around in the 70's

My elderly neighbour still has one 😀

I will never understand why the UK doesn't have screen doors.

Tilda77 · 10/09/2022 06:16

Maybe they have a job or hobby that means when they get home they have dirty/wet clothes to take off and don't want to take them off in the house?

Hyacinth2 · 10/09/2022 07:37

I remember seeing them occasionally in the 60s - thought it was to keep the paint off a south facing door. (Paint probably being harder work in those days so stopped it flaking)

Growing up we had one on our front door. It was made of the same stuff as on deck chairs and was to keep the sun of the front door to keep it from fading. It was done away with years ago maybe early eighties.

It's a statement curtain innit

TheUnquestionedAnswer · 10/09/2022 09:49

How did you manage to take the pic without arousing suspicion? Good idea to have one of these if you have a porch. I'd have gone for a more boho look if it was my house 😎My front door goes right into the living room, so I have to cover furniture if it's in direct sunlight. Love to know more about the outside roller thing as pp mentioned.

Might be to keep the dog in.

You must know different sorts of dogs to me if you think a loose curtain would contain them!

It’s to hide all the amazon parcels

SunnieShine · 10/09/2022 10:25

I used to have a door like this. I wanted to put a curtain on the inside to prevent drafts but because the door filled the whole width of the hall, it was hard to draw it to one side.

This actually makes a lot of sense to me.

LampLighter414 · 10/09/2022 10:50

Could it be to facilitate risky activities outdoors in the late evening with a little more privacy?

Skinterior · 10/09/2022 10:55

Flies. My neighbour has one, great in the summer when you want to leave your door open

ChestnutGrove · 10/09/2022 11:21

There's a French film a like, made in the 70s, but set in 60s Paris. At one point the main character walks past this door curtain in the street. I've always found it curious. Maybe it was to make an exhibition entrance look more fancy or something. It's not part of the film, she just walks past it in the street. The film is called Diabolo Menthe/Peppermint Soda.

We used to live in a 1930s house and our neighbour still used the original striped door cover (like deckchair fabric). There were twist clips down the sides of the doorframe that you popped the curtain onto. It was flat with a split down the front so you could leave the door open in the summer without flies etc getting in. It would come out in the summer and be washed, folded and out away once the weather changed. Totally normal!

FarmGirl78 · 10/09/2022 11:43

House near me has one, but its up all year round not just in warmer weather. Always wondered why. So glad I found out - always just assumed they were excentric!

They used to be more common when I was a child; saw a lot when visiting GPs who lived near the seaside. I think it was to stop the strong sunshine making the paint fade.
I guess they are less necessary now that paint formulations have changed.

Stop taking photos of my house, weirdo.
