Cat bit my DD age 3. What to do

A cat on our road bit my toddler on her arm this morning. She had a fleece on so wasn’t directly on her skin but the bite went through her fleece and has broken the skin slightly. I washed her arm. Is there anything else I need to do?

Poor thing, I would also have her checked, just to be safe.
Is there any way you can report the cat, especially if it's known for this sort of behaviour? I know you can with dogs, but might be worth seeing if you can also do so for cats.

Report the cat?? 😂🙈

BrokenMatress · 09/09/2022 13:57

You also need to to animal training for your child. They should not have been near enough an unknown cat for it to bite.

Supersimkin2 · 09/09/2022 14:04

Teach toddler to be respectful of cat (she may know this now 😀) and get abs from doc.

Highly unlikely she’ll get anything but GPs are currently told to give preventive treatment. Might need a tetanus shot.

I know this cos my new cat savaged me last month 😀 with 0 provocation.

PeanuttyButter · 09/09/2022 14:20

Go to the GP and see what they say. Nothing you can do about the cat except teach your child to stay away they aren't usually aggressive unIess provoked. I got bit on the little finger by a cat once and it got very infected very quickly. Just the nature of cat bites unfortunately.

Report the cat? Ive heard it all now Grin

I don't think you can, it was just a suggestion. I wouldn't want to be bitten by a cat or dog, and would prefer if something could be done about either one if known to be prone to hurting people.
It's weird that people are keen to blame the toddler/OP, but would be appalled at a dog bite.

Don't be ridiculous. Other people's pets aren't part of a public petting zoo, dogs or cats, if no owner about to ask leave them alone.

Ketanne · 09/09/2022 14:40

If it's a case of posters assuming I mean report the actual cat, I thought it would be obvious, but - report the cat in the way you would report a dog bite - report the incident, owner is reprimanded.

Cats don't tend to just run up and attack people

JackandSam · 09/09/2022 15:06

Keep it clean and keep an eye out for infections. I've had 100s of cat bites in my life (farm cats, then a social worker with the elderly!) And I've never needed antibiotics.

To whom?

The Cat Monitors? The Kitty Po-Po?

The police will have zero interest. Let the owners know, sure, they will tell you 'stop your child from trying to touch strange cats'.

I'd monitor the wound and keep it clean, if its a shallow scratch from teeth or claws it should be fine, particularly as it was through clothing, but you'll see very quickly if it isn't as its a surface wound.

The wounds that are risky with cats (and tbh...anything!) are deep puncture wounds as it takes much longer for infection to show on the surface, and they can appear to heal on the surface but be festering underneath, though actually the major reason small puncture wounds are so dangerous is that people DON'T think they're dangerous and so don't clean and monitor them properly.

Who to? The toddler approached the cat. What would you like done to the owner or the cat?

Withdrawn at poster's request

FlorettaB · 09/09/2022 15:52

Cats are arseholes. They’re often very happy to be stroked right up until the second they’re not and they decide to communicate that by clawing your hand.

No, the "kitty po-po" is not enough, I think OP should call 999, because the police are the obvious first port of call, have the cat arrested and the owner shot at dawn, if banishment isn't an option. Of course, as you imply, I absolutely hate cats and want something awful to happen to it (ignore the fact I'm a cat owner and wouldn't wish harm on any animal, that's just an inconvenient truth 😉).

inmyslippers · 09/09/2022 15:57

A bit dramatic.

^^ cats harbour harmful bacteria to humans in their mouths. It really needs checking. Not dramatic at all

BigWoollyJumpers · 09/09/2022 16:24

I am wondering if all the "it needs checking" posters don't have cats? Seriously, I have had cats all my life, they have all inflicted bite and scratch wounds on me and the children. Wash, disinfect, put Savlon on. DD2 worked in a cattery, she has scars. They just plunged their battered hands in buckets of disinfectant!!

Supersimkin2 · 09/09/2022 16:50

NHS insist on giving you preventative abs, for once MN not dramatic.

Report the cat 😹

Smellywellyhoo · 09/09/2022 16:59

The cat didn't just randomly attack your DD. It didn't want to be touched. They don't initiate attacks but they will respond if provoked.

Smellywellyhoo · 09/09/2022 16:59

Report the cat did give me a good giggle! 🤭🤭

hellswelshy · 09/09/2022 17:04

Sorry but the kitty po-po made me properly laugh, after what's been a rubbish day, so thanks WiddlinDiddlin 😊

zingally · 09/09/2022 17:06

Just give it a really good clean and monitor it. Unless it looks particularly red/sore/inflamed, you don't need a doctor to see it.

As for the cat. Sometimes cats are ratty little bitey bastards.

ShaneTwane · 09/09/2022 17:06

ZeroFuchsGiven · 09/09/2022 12:36

Victim blaming? Grin
It was a genuine question, My cat is probably the queen of arsehole behaviour and is very prone to biting and scratching but that is generally when she feels trapped or scared, she doesnt maul toddlers in the street, but possibly would try if they done something like try to pick her up.

My cats a huge arsehole. She bit me last night on my wrist as i was watching tv in bed laying still. She just sniffed around then bit me for no reason the twat. Some cats are like that.

ghostyslovesheets · 09/09/2022 17:14

was it a small black cat with wonky legs? If so then, er, no that was not my feral little twat but for reassurance he's savaged me more times than I can remember and I survived - the other 4 have their moments as well - never lost a limb
Glad your gp is seeing her though - probably fine but worth checking
