To think we could get a TV licence just for September?

We don’t have a TV or a licence currently as are trying to raise our 2 year-old screen-free for the time being. Yesterday however I watched some live footage from the BBC News app on my iPad without thinking (AFAIK you’re technically supposed to have a licence for that?).

I’d like for 2 year-old to see some of the official events on an iPad (new king, etc.). Can we get a licence just for September and then cancel it again? Technically we should surely be able to but I wonder whether the authorities will accept this.

I don't think you can get a TV license in the same way as say, Netflix subscription. But it's all over YouTube so you could watch it on there.

murasaki · 09/09/2022 10:56

I'd imagine you could start a direct debit amd then cancel, but then you'd be on their radar and they might threaten to come round afterwards.....whether they would or not is hard to guess

Yankeedoodlekandle · 09/09/2022 10:56

It's all over other social media and streaming services that don't need a TV licence.

It was all over you tube this morning (much to my DC's dismay!)

MbatataOwl · 09/09/2022 10:57

Just watch the TV, no one is going to come knocking on your door or even know you don't have a licence.

LollipopLady123 · 09/09/2022 10:59

I get what people are saying about YouTube. There’s something about catching it live though with all the continuity announcements, etc. Admittedly that’s more about me than my toddler though.

I've never had a TV licence and watch what I like so I think you'll be fine.

More curious on the likelihood your 2 year old will be interested in the new King. I pointed king Charles out on the TV to my 7 year old this morning, told him that was our new king. He just said 'well he looks almost dead as well!' and went back to what he was doing.

BobMortimersPocketMeat · 09/09/2022 11:02

Your two year old won’t understand or remember any of this though, so it’s just about you. And I don’t think you can opt in an out of a licence in the way you describe - the monthly payments are just a way of spreading the cost.

Lcb123 · 09/09/2022 11:03

i don’t think you can easily do that. I doubt your 2 year old will know or care? (Or any 2 yo!)

Sky news app
ITV new app
Even the daily mail was live steaming Balmora gates at 4pm yesterday.

You don't need a website for either of them.

You don't need a TV licence I mean!

SnowyPetals · 09/09/2022 11:09

Your child is two, so the TV watching is really for you. I would go and buy newspapers for your child and put them in his memory box to look at when he's old enough.

Actually you should have a TV licence for live streamed TV news on the ITV news and Sky news apps

In some cases YouTube livestreams qualify as broadcast TV and would need a licence but in normality you don’t for YouTube, such as a livestream by a YouTuber, as opposed to a broadcast TV network

Yes you do. If you watch a web or app streaming a live TV service, like ITV Hub or All4 or Youtube, you need a licence.

You don't need a licence to watch it on catch up (other than iPlayer). So if you don't want to pay for a licence, you could watch it on ITV Hub after the programme has finished, just not while it's live.

Dotjones · 09/09/2022 11:28

Oh and on the original point, yes you can have a TV licence for a month and cancel it. You would have to buy it for a year up front or set up a direct debit, but you can cancel it at any time if you no longer need the service and get a refund.

BringOnSummerHolidays · 09/09/2022 11:32

I don't have a TV licence and watch them on YouTube.

thisisit77 · 09/09/2022 11:36

Just watch it bloody hell

User112 · 09/09/2022 11:38

Your 2yr old can watch it on YouTube a day or two after the event. Children won’t have a sense of time at that age anyway. So they won’t be too upset about not watching coronation live.

ILikeHotWaterBottles · 09/09/2022 12:08

You need a tv licence for ANY live tv. That includes your typical tv, like bbc, itv, sky news, but also YouTube live, Amazon live etc. You also need a licence for bbc catch up on iPlayer. Any other catch up doesn't count.

So you could technically watch it, but not live. Unless you got a tv licence as you say, for September.

I imagine they may step up their checks now for the licence although the man power needed is pretty heavy so you could still get away with it.

StuntEgg · 09/09/2022 12:20

If you have a TV set you'd be better using that than the iPad, as there is no IP address logged. Then if you're only going to watch a couple of things you'll be fine without a licence. They have to catch you in the act, or provide concrete evidence of you watching, or you have to admit to them you've been watching without a licence. And even then, they have to come to you. Just do it, millions of others don't bother with a licence.

LollipopLady123 · 09/09/2022 21:24

Thanks everyone. I’ve just bought a licence and we’re enjoying it for now. I can remember quite well watching Fergie’s wedding at pretty much exactly the same age my little one is now. We’ll see what happens when I apply for a refund in a month.

How goody two shoes. It’s a month.

SnowDear · 09/09/2022 21:31

bless you for thinking your 2 year old will even understand 😆

jimmyhill · 09/09/2022 21:39

The detector vans have been taken off the road as a mark of respect so you'll be OK without a TV licence

NCforthis864 · 09/09/2022 21:44

Yea you can OP. I do it for things like the world cup. Then cancel again before the month is up and they refund you so you’ve only paid for the month.

I just resubscribed yesterday so I can watch the news coverage, funeral and might as well hammer iplayer programs until this month passes and then I will cancel again.

BabyDreamers · 09/09/2022 21:49

I cancelled my licence and hot a refund but still watch it. They are not allowed to harass you. Never had anyone at my door and if I do I'll tell them I do not watch TV , if i did id have a licence and look into how to complain. I've opted out and that's the end of it.
