Does anyone still have two pairs of glasses.

Does anyone still have separate reading and distance glasses?
Just gone to multifocals and trying to get used to them?
Anyone not got them and prefer two separate glasses?

I have separate glasses, but hate them, I can’t afford multifocals right now.

StrawberryPot · 08/09/2022 17:39

I have 2 pair of varifocals (one pair are sunglasses). Plus a pair of reading glasses which I use in bed.

Why do you need separate readers then?

Onthegrid · 08/09/2022 17:48

I have 4 pairs of glasses and wear contact lenses!
On normal days I wear my lenses fro fix the short sightedness and then 1 of 3 pairs of glasses to correct the old age long sightedness, pair 1 is for monitors with special coatings and prescription, they live on my desk and are used daily, pair 2 are the strength of my prescription for reading small print and can only be used for that, pair 3 are a lower strength and are my handbag, daily glasses as I can walk around in them or slip them on when needed.
For days without lenses I have varifocals but I don’t particularly like them, and they are no use for the monitor, I have to work on a laptop and try to look through the bottom to see the screen clearly. They make me feel dizzy when walking and I am not sure they are great for driving.
When they need replacing I will just get single vision again.

Possibly the same reason I do - varifocals are unpleasant to use for an extended period,.

I’m shortsighted and have distance glasses, varifocals, tinted distance glasses, reading glasses, both plain and tinted. Next time my eyes are tested I’m getting a pair for between distance and reading for use with my laptop as I’m having problems with that these days.

I am very very old.

mdh2020 · 08/09/2022 17:55

I wear varifocals and also have a pair of prescription varifocals sunglasses. At one point I a lovely pair of gold rimmed half glasses for reading and writing. University lecturers said they were intimidating!

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 08/09/2022 17:59

2???? Just 2???
I have loads - 2 pairs of varifocals (one current px and one the previous px just in case I sit on the former). 4 pairs of readers, because reading books/kindle/knitting patterns for a length of time is easier than varifocals and I lose them. 2 pairs of distance for emergency and decorating and 2 pairs of intermediate for music reading. 1 pair of sunglasses.

LittleMissPeggySue · 08/09/2022 18:03

I have separate glasses because it was about £100 cheaper that way. Also, my dad didn't get on with multifocals and I think I'd struggle so I'm ok with that choice. Only thing is I do keep forgetting where I've left my reading ones.......

maskersanonymous · 08/09/2022 18:05

Loads here too! I have them for intermediate and distance but I don't need them for reading yet. I have a bunch of distance prescription glasses. I can't wear contacts any more which gets me down so the multiple frames are an antidote to this. My husband has even more pairs than me (but that is because he breaks or loses them all the time!).

Have I read that correctly, that you wear contact lenses and glasses over the top? And that works? I’d never thought of that.

itsnotdeep · 08/09/2022 18:10

I don't get on with multifocals and have loads of pairs with different prescriptions for different purposes. I also have multi focal contact lenses.

Oopsilot · 08/09/2022 18:13

Why do you need separate readers then?

Because of the position when reading in bed makes it difficult in varifocals.

Chasingsquirrels · 08/09/2022 18:15

I have mono-vision contact lenses (one distance, one near - brain just sorts it out) which is fine most of the time but I did find driving at night last winter strained my eyes so I'm going to get a pair of glasses with clear lense for my distance eye a lense to correct my reading contact to distance for the near eye.

Then have distance glasses for when I'm not wearing my lenses, but don't then need correction for near.

ElBandito · 08/09/2022 18:15

If you don't like varifocals, bifocals might be the way forward.

Georgyporky · 08/09/2022 18:20

After I gave up c.l., I just have one pair of varifocals that have transition lenses.
I also have a pair solely for screens , but my main pair is OKish for that anyway.
Can't see the point of having many pairs.

If the prescription changes or I fancy a new pair, I keep the old pair for emergencies.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 08/09/2022 18:21

I guess I do… I typically wear contacts as I’m nearsighted but now need glasses for screens and close work if I’m wearing my contacts. If I’m wearing my distance glasses instead of contacts I don’t really need close correction. At some point I’ll need both near and far correction in my glasses. But I’m not sure if I want to go that route for contacts yet, and may keep them separate.

Chikapu · 08/09/2022 18:23

I do, I absolutely refuse to have varifocals no matter how much the optician insists. I can't get on with them and I'd rather have two separate pairs.

ScottishLavender · 08/09/2022 18:27

I can't get on with varifocals so I have reading and distance glasses.

DimplesToadfoot · 08/09/2022 18:51

I have 3, one for distance, 1 for reading and bifocals that I use the most, I bought varifocals and couldn't stand up or walk in a straight line with them on.

lljkk · 08/09/2022 18:55

separate, I don't really need the distance ones. I have lots of cheap readers.

soundsofthesixties · 08/09/2022 18:55

I have separate glasses for distance and reading. I can't get on with varifocals, I've tried and just prefer the separate ones.

WhizzFizz · 08/09/2022 18:56

I've tried twice with varifocals, got the best you could buy and I hate them.
I do have a couple of pairs of bifocals for driving.
So I stick with separate reading and distance. I actually have at least 15 pairs including distance and reading sunglasses. Some in the car, my bag, bedside, a pair in every room.
I buy online from glasses direct.

Wilkolampshade · 08/09/2022 19:00

I wear contacts for my short-sightedness and have numerous £1 Primark reading glasses crammed on my head for when needed.
Much to my DD's amusement I sometimes forget how many have migrated to my forehead over the day.. - it is not unknown for me to nip to the shops with 4 pairs simultaneously perched up there. .

SherwoodForest · 08/09/2022 19:04

I have separate distance and reading glasses. The optician told me that I would struggle to read with varifocals as my close sight is very poor.
I also have spare reading glasses both upstairs and downstairs at home and another pair always in my bag. I carry prescription sunglasses for distance in my bag and they are mostly used for shops that are too glary as glare causes migraines.

StrawberryPot · 08/09/2022 19:19

Exactly so!
