Does anyone still have two pairs of glasses.

Does anyone still have separate reading and distance glasses?
Just gone to multifocals and trying to get used to them?
Anyone not got them and prefer two separate glasses?

I tried varifocals in July. Couldn't get on with them, gave them back and have returned to two pairs of specs.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 08/09/2022 19:25

I do, only because I have vertigo (BPV) and was strongly advised against varifocals for driving by optician

Nanny0gg · 08/09/2022 19:30

I have varifocals and reading glasses because my eyesight is so shit.

Drives me mad!

theresnouseingrumpin · 08/09/2022 19:32

I have 3 pairs of normal reading glasses (same strength I mean) cos I'm always losing them 😂😂

RavenT · 08/09/2022 19:34

3 pairs!

1x varifocal
1x varifocal sunglasses
1x office lens (close to mid distance, wear for work)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 08/09/2022 19:35

Gosh, we have a lot more than two pairs. We have glasses for white wine, red wine, champagne and even dessert wine.

Hold on a mo! I'm not sure I read your post correctly but the screen on my phone is rather small and I sometimes have difficulty reading it.

NotMeNoNo · 08/09/2022 19:41

Loads

-everyday varifocals (good ones)

  • prescription sunglasses
  • single vision distance (better for night vision, motorcycle etc)
  • multi focal contacts and plain sunglasses/readers to go with them.

For computer work I was advised to lower the screens to below nose level

I would say some varifocals are better than others, if you don't get on with Asda/Specsavers ones.

Ccoffee · 08/09/2022 19:44

Technically 2 pairs, intermediate and reading. In practice use the intermediates for everything except embroidery (which I hardly ever do, partly because I can't look to TV and back as I sew as it give a headache with reading glasses), and just whack the font size up on my kindle.

Couldn't get on with varifocals.

woodhill · 08/09/2022 19:45

I have separate readers for reading

FredaFox · 08/09/2022 19:46

I've only recently started needing the two pairs, am worried about how I'll take to a bi or veri-focal pair so will stick to two pairs for now but this is a well timed thread for me

I am paranoid I'll leave a pair at home and will get stuck without either distance or readers

Iheartmysmart · 08/09/2022 19:48

I can’t get on with varifocals either so have two separate pairs of glasses. I had laser eye surgery years ago which deliberately left me with mono vision that worked perfectly for many years. Sadly the vision in both has deteriorated and I now need specs again. Managed without anything until my early fifties though.

Lesserspotteddogfish · 08/09/2022 19:51

I’ve had two separate ones. I seem to have a problem with normal glasses so often, they never get them right the first time, so I’m almost certain varifocals will be a problem for me. I don’t use the reading glasses as they weren’t right, so they replaced the lens that wasn’t right with a superior quality one and I then noticed how crap the other one was in comparison, but didn’t want to go back as the local specsavers manager is an arse that takes it personally when there are any issues, so I threw them away and just read without glasses.

Sgtmajormummy · 08/09/2022 20:01

I have a strong prescription and astigmatism.
Monofocal soft contact lenses for driving and work. With those I use several cheap pairs of 1.5 reading glasses and one pair of reading sunglasses for the beach.
Mid-vision glasses which are fine for home but don’t give me enough field of vision for driving. If I have to read something I take them off and squint!

Sgtmajormummy · 08/09/2022 20:04

I have a cellist friend who wears glasses to play. One lens is distance strength for reading the music and the other is near vision for the strings. They just close the eye not needed at the time!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 08/09/2022 20:04

2 here, although I don't use my reading glasses perhaps as much as I should.

KohlaParasaurus · 08/09/2022 20:47

I have three pairs of glasses. One pair that fully corrects my short sight for driving and cycling, one pair that doesn't quite fully correct my short sight for working at a computer, and one pair of cheap reading glasses to put on for close work or reading small print when I'm wearing contact lenses, which I do most of the time. When I'm not wearing my contact lenses my near vision is still quite good. I'll probably need some sort of multifocal lenses eventually, but my current arrangement is fine for now.

TheOrigRights · 08/09/2022 20:56

3 pairs.
Varifocals for driving and when I need to keep switching between distance and close (theatre, driving, watching telly).
Medium for computer work.
Readers for in bed.
I can use the varifocals all the time but I prefer the larger field of view when I'm working on the computer or when I'm reading in bed.

dottypotter · 09/09/2022 00:23

Chikapu · 08/09/2022 18:23

I do, I absolutely refuse to have varifocals no matter how much the optician insists. I can't get on with them and I'd rather have two separate pairs.

I've got multifocals but not sure if I like them.

Do you find it a pain keep swapping glasses?

OP posts:
tobee · 09/09/2022 02:09

I'm sick to death of having two pairs (I needed my first distance one a few months ago) and really hope I can get vari or bi focals and get on with them.

stillherenow · 09/09/2022 02:58

I'm not interested in varifocals at all, happy with two pairs

stealtheatingtunnocks · 09/09/2022 03:05

Where did you get half rimmed glasses? I really want a pair but can’t find them anywhere. I need them for reading lecture notes but not for giving the lecture /eyeballing the students!

RamblingFar · 09/09/2022 03:12

I have 3 pairs. I have astigmatism, short sightedness and a squint to correct, all that can be corrected through the same single lenses.

Prescription glasses - wear for embroidery, or any other close work
Old prescription glasses - stay in car for driving
Prescription sunglasses - for sunny days

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 09/09/2022 03:26

Varifocals make me feel queàsy

SofiaAmes · 09/09/2022 04:30

I mostly wear my reading glasses for reading. I have some distance glasses for TV. I tried varifocals for driving (distance and looking at the map) and they were awful. I then got bifocals for driving which were perfect. The important part was that the reading part of the bifocal was not the full strength that I would need for reading, because I only use it to look at my phone (hands free attachment) for map instructions and the phone is actually about 18" from my face. I sometimes wear the bifocals for when I go to the theater as I like to look at my playbill sometimes during the performance.

WalkingOnTheCracks · 09/09/2022 04:48

I need glasses for reading, different glasses for driving, and no glasses for just doing stuff.

Varifocals irritated me.
