to think its rude to recline seat on long-haul flight

....for the entire flight (except during meals), unless its a night flight and everyone is reclined? I had a 9 hour (day-time) flight yesterday and the family in front of us were fully reclined for the majority of the flight. Most others (including those behind us) remained upright so we also remained upright for the entire flight with less room due to the seats in front being reclined. DS (3) was asleep across our laps which didn't help with space, but i did feel it was 'unfair' that they were able to recline, whilst I felt it would have been rude for us to do the same to those behind - 3 tallish men. AIBU?

I never understood the consternation from either side of the recline/no recline camps. FTR… I very rarely recline on short flights but always do on long ones. I really don’t care what anyone does around me.

My only real problem with a recliner was one man whose seat was broken because it reclined almost 2-3 times more than it should have. I tapped him on the shoulder and said “Excuse me sir, if you get any closer to me I’m going to have to ask you to marry me to preserve my honor ” After he stopped sputtering and turning red and his friend next to him stopped laughing and pointing at him he did Un-recline some to a normal recline position.

And now the word recline has lost all meaning to me by being written out so much.

Irridescantshimmmer · 08/09/2022 19:20

I meant family

FoxInABox · 08/09/2022 19:26

I wish the seats didn’t recline, it’s not enough to give much extra comfort to the recliner in comparison to the discomfort it gives the person behind. We had a long haul day time flight once were 3 members of a family of 4 in front of us all reclined while people were still boarding. The mum was across the aisle, sitting in front of my DD, I saw her look across at her family and on realising they were reclined she reclined too. She then proceeded to sit forward colouring in for the majority of the flight.

@KosherDill

Recline. It's a function of the seat you've paid for.

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 19:50

WonderingWanda · 08/09/2022 17:11

You don't pay for the space, you pay for the seat and the seat reclines.

I have a theory that all the anti recliners are the sort of people who don't like anyone else parking on the road outside their house either!

I reckon that you may be on to something there. It very much has the same sense of entitlement about it.

FarFromHome2 · 08/09/2022 19:52

RetreatRetreatRetreat · 08/09/2022 18:02

Well I've been in the last row on a long haul flight and actually, despite having paid the same as everyone else, the rear seats don't recline, so literally, you have no choice but to let some idiot recline into your lap. It's really selfish.

Then who’s the idiot for booking the rear seats? Seriously, this thread shows exactly the sort of people that the rest of us pay good money to never mix with.

Dragonskin · 08/09/2022 19:52

Dotjones · 08/09/2022 15:05

You have to be a dick to recline your chair on a plane. There really is no excuse.

To be fair it's the fault of those who design the seating arrangements on planes. Reclining should be done by moving your own seat forward so that you're the one who loses space, not the innocent person sitting behind you.

I guess it's a hangover from the 50s when maybe people had a degree of respect for their fellow passengers, clearly that's not the case now.

Agree here

MarshaBradyo · 08/09/2022 18:19

They should have a section for all those bruisey drink spillers, knee knockers and sleep psychics

And the rest of us can just recline peacefully leaving each other alone

Let’s be honest here, the keyboard warriors who post that sort of shit neither have the balls to do it nor the means to be flying long-haul.

FurAndFeathers · 08/09/2022 19:56

MistyRock · 08/09/2022 15:13

I hate people who recline. The only acceptable time is on a night flight. Its totally selfish behaviour.

yep utterly unreasonable to get tired on long haul trips for many hours over multiple time zones.

It doesn’t matter if you’re flying half way around the world chasing the sun for 16 hours and your body clock thinks it’s 2am. As long as it’s light where the plane is, you should totally ignore being so tired that you feel nauseous and definitely not use the seat for it’s intended function.

🙄

FriedasCarLoad · 08/09/2022 20:00

Surely the reclining function is for nighttime - ie when the lights are out (as out as they get on a plane).

It's pretty selfish to recline the seat during the day because it encroaches on someone else's space.

Changemaname1 · 08/09/2022 20:03

There was a full blown argument over this on my last long haul flight ! Police upon landing were threatened !

It’s a thought one as it’s annoying when the person reclines in front however as long as it’s not during eating I wouldn’t feel I could say anything as it’s their right to do so . I tend to just recline mine a little but on on of my last flights the woman in front fully reclined as soon as possible so I asked the person behind me if they minded if I did and she was fine and reckoned hers to ( she was at the very back )

rnsaslkih · 08/09/2022 20:05

It's a difficult issue. If you have an 8yo behind you, then it's no problem to recline. However if you have my dh behind you, who is 6 foot 8, then you will find you can't recline as his knees are there. Planes need to be better for tall people.

Yes. And it’s not like on a long haul flight the daylight on a plane ever deviates from The daylight in the time zone of origin does it?

Do you really think it’s impossible to be tired whilst a plane remain in daylight regardless of your body clock. 🤨

Sothis · 08/09/2022 20:09

All the posters saying not to recline on a “day” flight - well you don’t know where or for how long people have been travelling. I’ve often been on 32 hour schleps across the world and I’m often conscious that what is a “day” flight to everyone else is be a night flight for me as I’ve been awake for 24 hours straight! I’ll recline my seat outside of meal service.

eldora · 08/09/2022 20:12

The airline staff asked them several times when food and drinks were being served too, but they quickly reclined again, before the food trays were cleared (tbh the food trays took a long time to be cleared both meals

Why didn’t you just tell to put their seat up until trays were cleared?

You wouldn’t be so annoyed now if you had had a bit of gumption then.

Dragonskin · 08/09/2022 20:12

Exactly....quite bizarre that many of those claiming that reclining of seats is an almost automatically an inconsiderate act are themselves not considering the potential circumstances of other passengers.

But if the person in front is going to be utterly inconsiderate of your space, why should you be expected to have consideration for them? I was sat behind someone who fully reclined their seat and then leant forward sitting upright for most of the flight. I was absolutely fuming

This !! It might be daytime but at the point If I’m 12 hours into what will end up 30 plus hours been awake I may decide I need a nap!!

How to tell us you don’t fly long haul without telling us you don’t fly long haul

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 08/09/2022 20:15

Its a bit daft to say reclining does not make you more comfortable when people here are saying it does. Why do some people find it so hard to realise that just because something is true for them that does not mean it's true for others

I don’t think that there are any long-haul flights though that don’t have exit and bulkhead seats that you can book if you are too tall for the normal rows.

It’s not your space. Where are you getting the idea from that it is? Your space is what’s left after they recline.
