an energy cap of 2500 - still double energy bills this winter?

The figure of 2500 a one possible energy cap has been doing the rounds on the media -www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62801913. It's definitely better than 3500 but doesnt that still mean that our energy bills will be double this winter seeing as last winter's cap was 1200? We paid 180 per month last winter, will it be 360 this Dec? Yes, we get 67 pounds off or something but thats still quite a lot more per month than last year.

If someone can afford to pay a lot of money to have heating on as much as they need to keep their family comfortable and Gos forbid a hot tub, then good for them. Let them cough up. This seems like total bitterness at other people’s differing fortunes. Is this what the left is becoming? Drag everyone down to our level (my level maybe?).

I think everyone being treated equally is a good thing. Everyone who cuts back pays less, everyone who can afford to use more and pay more does.

So much resentment for other people NOT being up Shit Creek is so unpleasant to read. The poorest should be helped the most, but the focus is on tearing down the rich. Crab-in-bucket-like.

The fact is, this deal fucks the country for a long time. It costs so much and we all need to pay it back eventually through tax or austerity, public service cuts etc.

It makes no sense to have a blanket cap. Just like it makes no sense to have a blanket tax rate.

The capped price should apple to what.. the first 15 units a day (example figure pulled from nowhere but you get the point). Then any power you use after that gets paid for at the full price.

It would ease the burden for those who really need it, and discount the burden for those with larger homes and higher incomes. It saves the taxpayer from subsidising the wealthy and lowers the debt the country is getting into.

The rich are not in our bucket and never will be. The rich own the bucket.

Remember you are significantly closer to being homeless and destitute than you ever will be to becoming a billionaire or multi-millionaire. Stop glorifying our oppressors and start fighting back.

An energy system where some can afford to run hot tubs/swimming pools/wine cellars, heat their homes to 24 degrees 24/7 while others go cold and hungry because they can't afford to turn their heating or oven on is a broken system. We need to make the system and society as a whole more equitable not more equal.

That you support people wasting energy simply because they can is morally reprehensible imo.

I think everyone being treated equally is a good thing. Everyone who cuts back pays less, everyone who can afford to use more and pay more does.

But that isn't what is happening, everyone that can't afford it will have no choice but to cut back, those that can afford the increase continue to spunk energy wherever they pleased at a discounted rate.
The discount is paid back by everyone else, including those who are very frugal with their energy use.

If you think I'm resentful of people not being up shit creek you are wrong. I'm resentful that the nation will be paying for people's energy that are wasting it/financially sound.

Personally short term this plan will benefit me financially but long term and for the country and the majority it is fucking nuts. It is not helping where it is needed.

Its not about "punishing" the rich or being jealous of success, since 2015, the numbers of millionaires in this country has gone from 800k to 2.5m.. and good for them but they need to pay now we are in at the very least, an economic war with Russia.

If the wealthy do not pay a larger proportion of their wealth toward energy, then the poor will be paying the difference for decades to come, both in cash terms and in poorer public services esp health and education BUT will still face a completely unaffordable doubling in energy costs.

Everything I've read - so far says we all get the £400'- spread oct to mar and it's free ( not ti pay back)
And there will be additional money for low income people
Unit prices will be frozen - so bills have only doubled not x 3 or x 4

  • (which is better than we could have hoped)
Businesses will get help - And there are big plans to invest in energy making us more independent (from foreign imports ) Which is the way forward

Truss economics seems to be
Spend more
Cut taxes
Increase debt

This will inevitably lead to higher inflation and higher interest rates and is economic madness.

How would a tiered system work? Do you need a smart meter? If you meter is only read every six months how do they calculate daily usage? What about pre-payment meters? I think unfortunately it is too difficult to implement although what be interested to see how Germany will do it.
