an energy cap of 2500 - still double energy bills this winter?

The figure of 2500 a one possible energy cap has been doing the rounds on the media -www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-62801913. It's definitely better than 3500 but doesnt that still mean that our energy bills will be double this winter seeing as last winter's cap was 1200? We paid 180 per month last winter, will it be 360 this Dec? Yes, we get 67 pounds off or something but thats still quite a lot more per month than last year.

I think it would be very hard to completely insulate everyone from any rises in a global shortage of gas. Borrowing for this will probably be over 100 billion.

My electric bill is currently around the £80 a month mark. Not sure on gas as it’s been warm and I don’t pay by direct debit.
They wanted roughly £100 each for DD and I know id be in credit if I did that.

my bills before any of this were £40-60pm electric and probably the same for gas in Winter, much less in summer.

So yes, pretty much double for me too. I’m still relieved but I feel like they’ve let it go on this long, letting us think it would be so much higher so we’re now almost grateful that our bills are ‘only’ double.

Yes, that's about right. But when we were facing the very real possibility of bills being 4 or 5 times what they were a year or two ago, then 'only' double is quite a relief.

Yes only double will be a relief even though that means extreme difficulty for million's.

But in this crisis it's better than nothing.

Get real - there has to be at least some reflection of the massive rises in gas prices. This rumoured package is already going to cost a fortune - time will tell if it will lead to (more) cuts to public services and tax rises.

as others have said, it sucks but global events mean there will be some increase and we can't realistically expect any gov to just stop all of it. The long term factors that have allowed other countries eg France to prevent significant rises just can't be parachuted in, but I'd like to see more talk of longer term measures going forward but that rarely happens as no Gov can commit to anything that takes longer than 5 years.

I wouldn’t want zero increase as price impacts usage but at least it won’t be even more insane figures

Well yes it will be higher, the energy prices are higher and we can’t be shielded from it all. This is going to cost the country a huge sum as it is.

my current usage is £2 per day & I was offered fixed rate of £166 so this won’t benefit me. I actually don’t want to be paying £2590 per year.

tgis is only going to benefit the rich in the 5-6 bedroom houses that would’ve spent that & more anyway.

No, the price cap doesn’t mean that at all. It’s the unit price that is capped, not an overall price. The £2509 figure is based on an average. Heating on all day will mean higher costs than average.

No. It's still a fix on unit rate, not a maximum you will pay. Use more pay more. Use less pay less.

I appreciate we can't escape the fuel crisis.

But looking at double is much better than the horrific run away figures we saw.
Esp if we still get the payment.

If the government do a fantastic package and explain usage then I think in return most of us will be sensible this winter.

I thought this cap was what labour proposed?
Only doubling my bill will certainly help me!
It's rubbish but the peace of mind knowing it's not going to spiral out of control will be immense!
I can budget and plan for double.

Well this is my concern. We're still looking at the energy crisis all wrong.
We're all worried about it being too expensive and the govt needs to make it affordable. I understand that.
Actually though, we need to be saying "there's not enough for everybody to have what they want, how can we make sure everybody's basic needs are met?"

At the moment, lowering the price cap still means that well off people can run tumble dryers, hot tubs, ott Christmas lights and anything else they please whilst those at the other end of the scale will still struggle and go cold this winter.
There must be a better way?
