Clothes never dry properly on a clothes horse

dogmum00 · 05/09/2022 16:39

I've tried using clothes horses in the past including this week and the clothes just never dry! I will put them on in the morning and the next evening they're still not dry, especially jeans and jumpers. We don't have a tumble dryer so I always have to resort to heating. Anyone else find this?

You need to soread them a bit and leave it somewhere with good air circulation. I leave mine in a hallway because there is always some draft from various open windows. They usually dry here within 24 hours

Bubblebubblebah · 05/09/2022 16:44

Draught dang it

sittingonacornflake · 05/09/2022 16:45

Have you tried sticking the clothes horse outside? I've been doing that all summer and clothes have been drying beautifully

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/09/2022 16:45

Can you afford a heated dryer? My stuff dries Better with that but I find a room with a window open helps dry quicker however I'm south so warmer for longer

skilpadde · 05/09/2022 16:46

You need a dehumidifier. Getting clothes to dry becomes really easy.

Comedycook · 05/09/2022 16:46

Get a heated airer...so much better

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/09/2022 16:47

It needs a breeze to dry things at this temperature. What’s the air circulation like where you put the airier?

CecilyP · 05/09/2022 16:47

‘Never’ seems unlikely! Quite long for jeans and jumpers, yes. Try an extra spin before hanging and spread out as much as possible.

Ilovelindor · 05/09/2022 16:48

I always give my washing a second spin on the top speed setting after it's washed. Then make sure it's spread out across the airers.

For things like jumpers, I tend to put them on a coat hanger and hang them over a wardrobe door to dry that way. Saves ironing as well.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/09/2022 16:48

I've always dried my clothes on a clothes horse and they can take a little longer to dry, but they do dry. You need to be careful to hang them up properly though - if the fabric is bunched or the clothes are too close together then that can mean you still get bits that are damp.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 05/09/2022 16:48

Could you get a dehumidifier? I wouldn't be without ours now, as long as clothes are hung out properly (i.e. not all bunched up or on top of each other) a full load will be dry within 24 hours using the laundry setting on the dehumidifier (often sooner if there aren't jeans or hoodies etc). It also prevents damp/condensation from all the wet clothes drying indoors. Cheaper than a tumble dryer and won't shrink clothes either.

sayanythingelse · 05/09/2022 16:49

Watching with interest as I've got the same problem. I've seen a lot of people say buy a dehumidifier - any recommendations?

Everylittlethingsgonnabealright · 05/09/2022 16:54

I never have a problem - not dry within 24 hours all the time, but I put the clothes horse outside in the summer and in an upstairs bedroom next to a radiator in winter. In summer it means I can pop the horse inside quickly if it rains! I have a washer dryer so put the clothes on a 60 degrees dry cycle in winter to give them a head start.

greystarblanchard · 05/09/2022 16:55

Always do an extra spin after the wash is finished. Hang up where at least one window is open. Get a dehumidifier.

PeloDramatic · 05/09/2022 16:56

Dehumidifier is magic, I love mine
I also have a fan on as it's my exercise room, and hang up tops so they dry pretty quick

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/09/2022 16:56

I give clothes an extra spin, important not to overload to allow air circulation and I'll put airer outside if at all possible( no garden)

FloppyFlippy · 05/09/2022 16:58

Do you have an airing cupboard, that’s good for finishing things off, especially thick items?

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 05/09/2022 16:58

If you spread the clothes out and leave them by an open window, they will dry. Heres ours which I've just taken a photo of.

I've always dried on a clothes horse inside, no other option - just need to spread things out and I hang jumpers, tops and dresses on hangers from the curtain rail. I leave by open window and try and position in the sun where poss

PremiumBanana · 05/09/2022 17:00

For those looking for dehumidifier recommendations, we have had our meaco dd8l for going on ten years and it’s fab. Don’t use it summer though.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 05/09/2022 17:01

Choose your sunniest room - really makes a difference
Open a window if you're home
Load the clothes horse as lightly as possible - in fact I'm going to buy a second one at the weekend for this reason. Hang shirts on hangers off the ends to make extra capacity
Jeans and jumpers will take 36hrs regardless

FloppyFlippy · 05/09/2022 17:01

Also move the clothes airer around so it’s in the sunniest room if the house and turn the clothes over half way through drying.

Greyarea12 · 05/09/2022 17:02

Try a heated clothes horse. I got one from aldi for £45 (I think). It has a cover that goes over it and is a godsend in the winter. (I dont have space for a dryer)

This! 👍

Deux · 05/09/2022 17:06

Make sure you hang up anything with pockets like jeans or hoodies inside out.
