Driving Tests every 25 years?

I’m learning to drive right now... I’m in my mid 30s. I think everyone should have to retake their driving test every 25 years. To both raise revenue and get higher standards of driving. I feel if you have nothing to improve then nothing to worry about. If you’re good enough to pass the test you deserve to drive on the road. If not, then buses for you.

Do you live in london?

My partner drives 20miles to work. Taking around 40/45min each way.

The Train journey would involve a 55min trip to take another train 38min to get to the town they work In around 3hrs 20min of travelling on tip of an 8hr day.

Well he has a choice of driving (paying the mileage rate for using that road, possibly for a peak hour, bearing in mind that he is probably now in an electric car so no fuel costs in this future scenario) or using public transport.

And no, I don't live in London. Nor any other city. Other places do have decent public transport you know.

I honestly feel there's quite a percentage of driver who aren't confident, competent or both

I would agree with this . But us competent drivers shouldnt be penalised because of it

How does one sort the competent drivers from the incompetent, in order to identify those who need education? With some form of assessment of course, which needn't be a formal test, it could be triggered by a black box.

Ooh, imagine the outrage at being fined for dithering at junctions, fined for not making progress.🤣

No. I used the M62 corridor regularly.
Using the roads is vital for my business. There's just far too much bimbling around.

Lunar270 · 06/09/2022 19:43

Drive an EV and everyone is bloody bimbling. I can't stand hesitant and bimbling drivers.

Infuriating when people slow at a roundabout when visibility is good and there's nothing else on the road. Or don't pull out at junctions because they can't judge the speed of an incoming car that's miles away 🙄

"That's why they're pushing public transport.
The modernization has begun."

Not where I am. Public transport is actively being cut meaning people who did use it are now getting cars so they can get to work.

Daisychainsandglitter · 06/09/2022 20:19

I don't see how that would work in practical terms. I've recently failed a test and it's almost impossible (I'm on 3 apps) to book a cancellation.

But those people haven’t been doing nothing since they took their tests - they’ve been building on their skills, experiencing a myriad of driving conditions, learning how to deal with other drivers and emergency situations.

You have been, presumably, in a dual control car, never been on a motorway or in the middle of the night. You have no idea.

Well said.
