Looks like we have entered a Regency with the Queen being absent from duties and Charles acting up.

What do you mean acting up??

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 05/09/2022 13:56

I would imagine they'll make a statement if they want it seen as a Regency.

No harm in PC or others stepping in for events. He isn't doing her official duties yet, just the more fun ones (eg Braemar) which aren't official work.

MeridianB · 05/09/2022 13:58

I think many royals have been doing more for years. It makes total sense to support the demanding schedule of a 96yo.

I have no doubt that the Queen is still wise and sharp and is handling the contents of her red boxes as diligently as ever.

BMW6 · 05/09/2022 14:02

In what way is Charles "acting up"???

Do you know anything about the conditions for a Regency to be the appropriate course of action??

Surtsey · 05/09/2022 14:03

Says who?

BMW6 · 05/09/2022 14:04

(Hint - Charles undertaking duties on behalf of the Queen does not mean he's suddenly the Regent)

"Acting up" in this context means 'taking on the role of the superior' (not, as I suspect you thought, 'misbehaving').

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 05/09/2022 14:12

The Queen is still undertaking the core duties of head of state. That is why Truss is traveling to Balmoral to see the Queen. Charles doing a few personal appearances does not constitute a regency.

FromageRouge · 05/09/2022 14:19

Unofficial quasi-regency, maybe. A formal regency is a very specific thing. It was bound to happen. Being a nonagenarian is no walk in the park.

DappledThings · 05/09/2022 14:21

Doesn't an actual regency have to be voted on by Parliament? Admittedly I am basing this entirely on having watched The Madness of King George.

Charles and other royals acting up a bit more is not a regency.

Her mind is Sharp her body maybe failing though 😢

Hbh17 · 05/09/2022 14:26

The Queen will be appointing her new Prime Minister tomorrow. So whilst Prince Charles is doing a great deal more of the public stuff, we are certainly not in a Regency situation. The Queen may be physically frail but there is no suggestion that she lacks capacity.

KindergartenKop · 05/09/2022 14:31

Wouldn't you help your 96yo mum out with her chores? Pop to sainsbos for her? Open Parliament?

x2boys · 05/09/2022 14:42

Is it that poster again?

Don't be silly we're talking about duties and responsibilities not funerals

What do you mean acting up??

Acting up in Civil Service terms means taking on temporary responsibilities of a higher grade, so you would sign off something as Joanna Bloggs A/SEO as opposed to Joanna Bloggs HEO.

watcherintherye · 05/09/2022 15:23

Please don’t let this end up being about the Mayor of Devizes declaring independence.

watcherintherye · 05/09/2022 15:29

Not sure. Trouble is, anything a bit left-field could be!

EdithWeston · 05/09/2022 15:29

I think a Regency is a real possibility at some point.

Not whilst the Queen still has the capacity, focus and inclination to carry out the role - with Princes Charles and William (as effectively the only two acceptable Counsellors of State) performing some roles under her aegis, and the rest of the 'Magnificent Seven' taking on the other, non-constitutional parts.

If the Queen were to decide it was too much for her, even in that assisted way, or it was assessed that her capacity was failing, then I think Charles would be formally installed as Prince Regent at that point. We're not there yet.

EdithWeston · 05/09/2022 15:32

And yes the Prince Regent (who became George IV) was installed by Parliament - Regency Act of 1811.

So I expect that's how it would happen if needed again

Oh was it Devizes that seceded? if it's the thread I'm thinking of his first job should be to sort out the McDs.
